The Red Dragons have been able to outspend many of their opponents en route to League One. Back-to-back promotions have lifted them out of the National League and into the third tier of English football for the first time in 20 years.

The playing field is now starting to level out, as Wrexham compete with the likes of Birmingham and Huddersfield, but Hollywood co-owners are still able to make the funds available that allow certain foes to be fended off.

GettyWHAT MACANTHONY SAID

That was the case when pursuing Leicester defender Lewis Brunt – who impressed on loan at Mansfield last season – with Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony telling his podcast of how Wrexham beat him to a much sought-after defender: “The ones we were in for, we had one signed, pretty much done, and at the last minute, obviously our Welsh friends came in and swooped in and offered him, I think it was £3,000 more a week than we had already agreed with the player. By the way, fair play to them, that’s their prerogative to do that, we’ve done that over the years with other clubs. The player chose them, no problem, I’ve got no issue with that.”

England wait on Ben Stokes' bowling fitness after delaying final team

Poor weather limits chance to assess allrounder after quad niggle in second Test

Andrew Miller04-Aug-2020England will take a late decision on the balance of their XI to take on Pakistan in the first Test at Emirates Old Trafford on Wednesday, after Joe Root acknowledged there was still a slight doubt about Ben Stokes’ readiness to feature as a front-line seam option.Stokes produced one of the finest allround performances of all time in the second Test against West Indies, scoring 254 runs across two innings and chipping in with three vital wickets in England’s series-levelling victory. However, he pulled up mid-over late in the game, after feeling a niggle in his quad, and played as a specialist batsman in the third Test, with Zak Crawley sitting out at No.3 to allow Chris Woakes to feature as an extra seamer at No.7.Though Stokes has looked sharp in training in recent days, and bowled approximately 12 balls during middle practice on Monday before a further stint in the nets to Crawley, England’s final practice on the eve of the match was hampered by poor weather, which limited the management’s chance to assess Stokes’ match fitness.”Luckily, we’re in a position where we can name the same squad of 14 as the last game, but we still need to know a little bit more about where Ben’s at,” Root said. “Unfortunately because of the weather today he wasn’t able to bowl outside. So we will wait on that throughout the night and make a decision in the morning.”With that squad of players, we’ve got a number of different options, we’ve got everything to cover the conditions and the pitch, and whatever that throws at us, we feel like we’ll have an answer for it.”There’s no question that Stokes will feature in the match in some capacity, but Root admitted that his hunger for training, and a proven willingness to play on through pain, has sometimes created a problem when attempting to assess the extent of any given injury.”It’s like telling him after nine overs on the bounce, not to bowl,” Root said. “Trying to take the ball out of his hand is very difficult. He’s so committed to the team and to the cause that he will always put his body on the line.”But I suppose, the more he’s played, and the more mature he’s got, he has got better at understanding that there are limitations to what he can do sometimes, even though those limitations are probably further for him then a lot of other players.”But he has definitely matured in that aspect and knows how important he is within our group, and what an asset he is moving forward. He’s definitely getting better looking after himself and it’s really important that we look after him as well.”Root confirmed that Stuart Broad was a probable starter after his ten-wicket haul in the third Test against West Indies, adding that the team would be keen to select at least one of their two fastest bowlers, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. And even though the exact balance of the team is still to be confirmed, he added that Stokes could play a role with the ball late in the game even if they took the cautious route initially.”It’s a fantastic position to be in,” Root said. “We were forced into making a slight change in terms of balance of the side with Ben being unable to bowl in the last game and you can see how well that worked.”So knowing that that works, and that we have had success with it, does fill everyone with a lot of confidence. Of course, Ben being able to bowl is huge for the team, and it shows how pivotal he is to the balance of the side, but if he’s not fit then we have other options, and a number of guys putting in fantastic performances, especially our seamers.””Even if he doesn’t start the game, it might be that he can bowl in the second innings,” Root added. “We might see him at some point throughout the game. We just need to make sure that we’re very clear on where he is physically.”But you look at how he’s performed with the bat alone, and what you can do in the field, it’s quite evident that he poses a huge threat against any side at the moment. The runs he’s scored, the way he’s playing, and the different methods that you can play as well.”He can absorb pressure for long periods of time now, and he’s shown as well that he can score at ten an over. So I’m sure that sides around the world will look at him as a batter alone, and think, ‘this guy has a serious plan. We want his wicket because if he gets going, and he gets in, he can really hurt us’.”

Spurs have teen Sarr regen who Yaya Toure rates as highly as Mikey Moore

Tottenham Hotspur are performing well this season and there are numerous signs of promise that Ange Postecoglou is the right man to lead the club away from the malaise of recent campaigns.

Combining with chairman Daniel Levy to blend pitch performance with sharp and astute recruitment, Tottenham are fighting to reclaim a spot at the forefront of the Premier League, with one eye on European conquests to come too.

Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy.

While impactful signings such as James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have captivated and revived a sombre-feeling fanbase since the Australian manager's arrival, he has been aided by some former groundwork invested in the procurement of young talent.

Destiny Udogie, for example, was signed from Udinese for £15m back in 2022 but spent the subsequent campaign back on loan with the Serie A side, while Pape Matar Sarr was nurtured with a bit-part role last season before being unleashed with regularity at present.

Both are remarkable players but the latter, Sarr, might just bloom into one of Europe's foremost midfielders.

Pape Sarr's Spurs performance in 2023/24

Tottenham signed Sarr from French Ligue 1 club Metz in a £15m package back in 2021 before being handed back to his former club for the campaign, much like with Udogie.

Tottenham midfielder Pape Sarr.

An injury crisis gave Lilywhites supporters a tantalising glimpse of the quality at the now-21-year-old Sarr's disposal last season after he started against AC Milan in the Champions League, excelling in the first leg at the San Siro and leading Harry Kane to gush over his potential

The Three Lions skipper said: "He's got fantastic quality. I think you saw today he was everywhere. He was breaking up play, tracking back, making tackles, shots, crosses. He's a player who has all the ability and he'll only get better from experiences like tonight, playing a really good team, a really good midfield."

He did, however, only earn three starting berths in the Premier League but has taken huge strides in his development since Postecoglou's arrival, having established himself as a key cog in the centre of the park, with his turbo-powered energy and multi-skilled midfield approach blending nicely with that of the tough-tackling Yves Bissouma.

Now, lauded as "one of these midfielders who really causes issues for opponents" by his Spurs boss, Sarr has demonstrated such prowess with three goals and three assists apiece across 20 Premier League starts this term, completing 88% of his passes and averaging 1.1 tackles, 4.5 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

Moreover, he ranks among the top 14% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 6% for assists and the top 18% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref, emphasising his adept offensive ability and ubiquity in his craft, also lingering back to chug balls forward with electric constancy.

To put it succinctly: Sarr is a real talent and will rise to the very forefront of the European game if he continues on his current course. He's proof of an exciting change of tack after years of mediocrity, with the Spurs academy absolutely booming at present.

Spurs' most exciting academy stars

Sarr is a prodigious young player but he's not a product of Tottenham's underbelly, though thankfully there is a wealth of promise positively begging to burst through onto the senior pitch, with no one currently playing for the development squad more exciting than Mikey Moore.

The versatile forward, aged only 16, has been in scintillating form this season and has scored 12 goals and supplied seven assists from only ten games in the U18 Premier League. He's the real deal.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 26, 2024

He's not the only young gun on the block, however, with Premier League icon Yaya Toure naming Callum Olusesi alongside Moore as one of the biggest talents down N17.

Toure was an absolute powerhouse for Manchester City and had been earning a living as a youth coach at Tottenham since his retirement, thus spending much time overseeing some of the development of stars of Olusesi's age bracket.

The Ivorian said: "Yeah, definitely. Mikey Moore and Callum Olusesi are top grade U16s, they are really good and most of the time they were playing with the 18s."

Given that Manchester United had a vested interest in poaching Olusesi from Lilywhite clutches before he penned a long-term contract in north London, it's patently clear that Postecoglou might have a future star on his hands.

Callum Olusesi's season in numbers

The 17-year-old Olusesi has recently penned his first professional contract with Tottenham having made a name for himself as a regular for the club's U18s in 2022/23 while still a schoolboy.

This term, the robust midfielder has racked up eight goals and four assists across the U18 Premier League and FA Youth Cup despite featuring from the centre of the pitch, and given his elegance and technical quality, it might just be that Postecoglou already has a Sarr regen on his hands.

The England U17 international's free-scoring success has placed him in good stead for a prominent career down the line, though he will likely need to continue his work at the current level heading into the 2023/24 campaign before making a deeper mark next term, hoping to crane Postecoglou's neck as he stands out among a host of top teenage talent.

An innate eye for goal is definitely not a bad way to start swivelling heads, and it's important to remember that Olusesi is still younger than Sarr was when the Senegal international first put pen to paper with Tottenham.

He's one to keep an eye on. If he keeps working as hard as he is at present, it might be a name on many more lips before the close of the 2024/25 campaign.

Eriksen was restricted to 28 appearances last season, and only 12 Premier League starts, but he has said of his immediate plans as speculation regarding a return Amsterdam rages: “I have one year left so for me I am a United player. I haven't been told leave or extension, so in that sense I have one year left on the contract and I feel good, my family is feeling good living in Manchester and United is a nice club. In terms of the football you want to play as much as possible. But also you think in terms of: 'How do I see myself? How do I fit into the team?' And in those terms I feel good. I feel that I am in a good place.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United are currently on tour in the United States, with Eriksen enjoying this trip more than one from 2023 – when Erik ten Hag’s side trained in New Jersey and San Diego and flew out to games in Houston and Las Vegas. With the Red Devils now based in Los Angeles, Eriksen added: “There were a lot of flights in between, there were a lot of short trips for one or two days in this city and then the next one. It did feel like a lot of stuff was going on in a very short period. This is also going to be a lot of stuff, but it does feel different already. If we speak next year or in two weeks' time maybe I can say it was better or worse, but it's feeling better.”

Edu loves him: Arsenal now eyeing move to sign new Brazilian gem for Arteta

Much of the credit for Arsenal's return to Europe's top table deserves to go to their recruitment, having rebuilt in North London to form a team that could end the season as Premier League champions. But that's not where their work will stop. Reports now suggest that the Gunners have turned their attention towards a future star.

Arsenal transfer news

Ahead of the summer window, most of the headlines have been centred around Ivan Toney and Arsenal's search for a striker with the killer instinct that Gabriel Jesus arguably lacks. Back from suspension, the rumours will undoubtedly continue to circle regarding a potential move for the Brentford forward. That said, he's not the only option for those at The Emirates.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

According to recent reports, Arsenal are also eyeing moves to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna and Viktor Gyokeres, who has starred at Sporting CP this season. Even if they are crowned Premier League champions ahead of the summer, rumours suggest that the North London giants will only get even better before the start of the next campaign.

Away from Europe's current stars, meanwhile, Mikel Arteta and co have seemingly set their sights on a future star. According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are eyeing a move for Douglas Mendes, who is currently at RB Bragantino on loan from Red Bull Salzburg.

10/10 Arsenal star has been even better than Havertz since Dubai trip

ByMatt Dawson Mar 10, 2024

The teenage centre-back reportedly has a fan in Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar, as the Gunners eye a move in the coming months. The deal itself certainly has its complications, however, with potential work permit issues standing in the way of the 19-year-old joining up with the Arsenal squad right away. Instead, Mendes would likely have to gain more first-team action in Europe before he can get a work permit to play for the Premier League giants.

In a move that would see Arsenal add to their Brazilian contingent, Arteta could be getting a future star.

Mendes is one for the future

It's not often that Red Bull Salzburg get things wrong in the transfer market, with a certain Erling Haaland a prime example of that, and that's a positive sign for Arsenal when it comes to Mendes. That said, it will be interesting to see whether the central defender has done enough to earn his place when he returns to the Austrian club from his loan spell back in Brazil this summer.

If that doesn't prove to be the case, then logic suggests that Arsenal will be set for far simpler negotiations. The move would make sense for Mendes too, who could learn from Gabriel Magalhaes – one of the best defenders in the world these days. At 19, there's no better time for Gabriel to tutor the young defender.

He could slot straight into the dressing room as well, given that Arsenal already have Jesus and Gabriel to turn to when it comes to Brazilian players. So, as the summer approaches and the headlines focus on Toney and others, it could be Mendes who steals the attention away from Arsenal's search for a forward in a deal with the future in mind.

Zimbabwe's three-match ODI tour to Australia postponed

The matches had been scheduled for early August but were always doubtful

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jun-2020Zimbabwe’s three-match ODI tour of Australia in early August has been postponed due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19.Although the series, which was set to be played in northern Australia, had been included in the schedule put out last month it was always unlikely it would take place.A range of issues have prevented the games from being played including the short length of the series, the significant bio-security measures that would need to be implemented prior to August, and concern for the health and safety of players, match officials, and volunteers.Speaking earlier this month Justin Langer indicated the matches were not on his radar when he spoke about getting the players ready for a potential return to action in September with the possibility of a rescheduled limited-overs tour to England. The matches were due to be played on August 9, 12, and 15 although only the third game had a venue confirmed with Townsville. It is the first full home series Australia have lost due to Covid-19 although the final two ODIs against New Zealand in March were cancelled after the opening game of the series was played behind closed doors at the SCG. Their Test tour to Bangladesh in June was also postponed.Outside of the 2015 World Cup it would have been Zimbabwe’s first visit to Australia since taking part in a tri-series in 2004 and Cricket Australia said they were committed to finding a future slot for the matches. Since Covid-19 struck, Zimbabwe have also lost series against Ireland, Afghanistan and India.”While we are disappointed to postpone the series, CA and ZC agree that in the best interest of players, match officials, volunteers as well as our fans, that this is the most practical and sensible decision,” CA’s interim chief executive Nick Hockley said. “We are committed to working with Zimbabwe Cricket on alternative dates to reschedule.”Acting Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director, Givemore Makoni, said: “We were excited about facing Australia but, given the circumstances, deferring the tour was the only option. We are, however, looking forward to the rescheduling of the series as soon as practically possible.”There are ongoing discussions between CA and the ECB about Australia travelling in September for the ODI and T20I matches that were originally scheduled for July. The next scheduled home cricket for the men’s team is two T20I series against West Indies and India in early October although they are also likely to be moved if, as expected, the T20 World Cup is postponed.

PCB chairman Ehsan Mani warns of financial fallout if Covid-19 disrupts T20 World Cup

If the tournament is impacted, it could affect the ICC’s revenue distributions to its member boards

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Apr-2020Ehsan Mani, the PCB chairman, has warned of the financial fallout to world cricket if the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held later this year, is impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. The tournament is due to take place in Australia in October-November but with much of the world in lockdown currently, and for some time yet, it is difficult to say with certainty whether the tournament will go ahead as planned.”If the World T20 in Australia, if that gets disrupted then the financial fallout from that will be very big,” Mani said on a PCB podcast. “The distributions they [the ICC] give to members, many boards – including us – will feel the pinch of it.”Mani, who is also chairman of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs committee and a former ICC president, was referring to the revenue the ICC distributes to its members, payments coming in twice a year annually in January and July. Those payments are made regardless of whether there is an ICC tournament in the calendar year and are calculated on the financial model that was agreed upon in June 2017.The PCB, along with six other Full Members, was slated to receive USD 128 million for the eight-year cycle between 2015 and 2023. Though that figure has been projected downwards to USD 115 million, a payout of approximately USD 7-8 million twice a year is a critical part of the financial health of all boards outside the big three comprising the BCCI, the ECB and CA.There is still some time to go before October, but the cricket calendar, if it is up and running by then, will also have to figure out a way of rescheduling a number of postponed bilateral commitments, as well as, potentially, the IPL.The PCB has not been hit as hard as other boards by the pandemic; the ECB looks likely to be hardest hit at this stage, but even SLC and the BCB have lost out on hosting bilateral tours from England and Australia respectively, which usually are lucrative tours for the home board.Nevertheless, the PCB is planning for the worst-case scenario in which ICC distributions could be affected should the T20 World Cup be postponed .”Financial controls are tight, we are not spending over what we earn so in that sense, we will probably be all right in the short term,” Mani said. “But if it goes into next year and ICC distributions don’t come in… I can say the PCB is expecting USD 7-8 million in July from the ICC, that might not come. So obviously we have to plan as if that doesn’t come.”Going forward to [next] January, the ICC will again distribute a similar amount. So there’s a lot of money on the line for us. How we can make that up when short of playing cricket, there’s no other way? You only make money by playing cricket.”Mani was talking only about the PCB’s planning for a worst-case scenario if the distributions don’t arrive; concrete discussions about the impact, of the cricket calendar shutting down, on revenue distributions have not yet taken place. But contingency planning is dominating the thinking of those in the sport’s corridors of power. Depending on how severely hit some boards already are, some scenarios regarding the revenue distributions are not implausible; July’s distributions could be held back to be paid out further down the line (when some boards might need them more) or redistributed in a way that lesser-hit boards give up a cut of their share to harder-hit ones. And although the distributions are no longer linked to ICC events as such, if the T20 World Cup doesn’t go ahead, or is fitted into 2021, January’s distributions could also potentially be impacted.

Wolves’ 8/10 star with fewer touches than Sa was the real hero v Brighton

Wolverhampton Wanderers continue to impress under Gary O’Neil, with a place in the FA Cup semi-final looking achievable.

The hosts took the lead within the first two minutes of the game, and from that point on, they rarely had any of the ball, with the Seagulls having 72% possession.

Wolves stayed compact as a unit, frustrating the visitors despite them having 18 shots. It was a performance that would bring the squad and the fans even closer.

Mario Lemina’s game versus Brighton

Mario Lemina has been excellent all season in O’Neil’s 3-4-2-1 setup, influencing the side at both ends of the field.

The Gabon international ended up being the match-winner, scoring the only goal of the game via an impressive, creative finish.

The 30-year-old was subbed off just before the hour mark and replaced by Pablo Sarabia. Lemina boasted an impressive 100% pass success rate, although he only made 11 passes all game due to Brighton’s dominance.

The midfielder registered 33% of Wolves’ nine shots while also making two tackles. However, he wasn’t as strong as usual in duels, winning just two of his eight duels.

Even though Lemina scored the only goal of the game to help Wolves progress, there was one other individual who was instrumental in the victory.

Max Kilman’s performance in numbers vs Brighton

Max Kilman started his 32nd game of the season last night, and his leadership at the heart of the Wolves defence was simply brilliant. The captain led by example from the first whistle to the last, displaying dominance when taking on in-possession and out-of-possession tasks.

Birmingham World handed the defender an 8/10 rating for his showing, describing it as “a proper captain’s performance.”

As can be seen in the table above, Kilman was an absolute rock at the back, making a huge nine clearances, while also not being dribbled past once, which shows that he was always one step ahead of the game and that he didn’t get drawn out of position by the tricky Seagulls attackers.

Despite actually having ten fewer touches than goalkeeper Jose Sa, the number 23 was also composed on the ball and willing to progress it when the opportunity presented itself, having a pass accuracy of 83%, completing one key pass, and losing the ball just four times.

This is extremely important given the fact that Wolves had to endure long spells without the ball for most of the game, and therefore, concentration is required both when continuously defending and when rarely getting on the ball, as his ball retention gave his side a much-needed breather at times in the second half.

De Bruyne and Ederson's long-term futures appear pretty tenous right now.
