Kvaratskhelia joined in 2022Linked with PSG moveHelped Napoli win 2022/23 Serie A titleWHAT HAPPENED?

The Georgian international has been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain as the French club look to secure a replacement for the outgoing Kylian Mbappe. Kvaratskhelia caught the world's attention last season as he played a starring role in Napoli's first Serie A triumph in over 30 years. While the Neapolitans have struggled this term, currently sitting ninth in the table, the winger has still recorded 10 goals and six assists in 32 league appearances.

Prying Kvaratskhelia away from Naples will not be easy, though, as his current deal runs through to 2027. However, the terms of the deal are the same as when he joined from Dinamo Batumi in the summer of 2022. With Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis not desperate to enter renewal negotiations, there is a chance the Georgian could look to force a move away.

WHAT HIS AGENT SAID

But per TMW, his agent Mamuka Jugeli said: “We are in no hurry to make a decision because Naples in Khvicha’s second home. We appreciate the care and respect that Napoli and Mr. President have shown towards Khvicha. Only if there is an offer that satisfies the club, the player and if De Laurentiis is not against it, will we consider it."

Getty ImagesWHAT NEXT FOR NAPOLI?

Napoli will look to end their tough season on a high with wins against Fiorentina and Lecce in their final two Serie A fixtures. But Francesco Calzona's side are unable to qualify for next season's Champions League, a predicament which could see the likes of Kvaratskhelia and star striker Victor Osimhen plot moves elsewhere this summer.

Shubman Gill leads KKR to stay alive, Kings XI knocked out

Sam Curran’s unbeaten 55 off 24 had given Kings XI a competitive total but KKR’s top order make short work of it

The Report by Danyal Rasool03-May-2019
The most pleasing thing about this game were the cameos – the half-century on either side, one score in the high 40s apiece, and – for good measure – an eye-catching cameo from Andre Russell. In a game brimming with high-class batting, Kings XI Punjab set Kolkata Knight Riders what looked a challenging target of 184. Nicholas Pooran’s 27-ball 48 – half of it coming in sixes – saw Kings XI on top early on, before a sumptuously intelligent 24-ball 55 not out from Sam Curran helped his side power to 183. Sunil Narine and Sandeep Warrier had stifled the innings through the Powerplay, but Kings XI’s success at building partnerships following the early dismissals of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul ensured they remained on track to post a competitive total. It was then something of a pity the bowlers couldn’t back that up and deliver the result Kings XI so desperately needed to keep realistic hopes of qualification alive. Chris Lynn has found himself in a run of form his side had desperately needed after losing their way through the group stages, with four half-centuries in the last seven innings. He fell four short of that mark today, but in 28 destructive balls, he had helped Knight Riders to 62 in the Powerplay. From thereon, Shubman Gill took over.Ensuring Lynn’s wicket did not result in a slump of the run rate, Gill worked the field expertly for the next six overs or so, with the occasional risk paying off. Handy contributions from Robin Uthappa and Russell helped, but it was Gill’s unbeaten 65 that saw Knight Riders all the way through, and while the game ended two overs early, the outcome – seven-wicket Knight Riders win – had been clear for the best part of the final hour.Shubman’s teenage kicksIt’s fair to say Shubnam came into this year’s IPL with something of a reputation to defend, having already made his international debut a few weeks ago. The way the tournament panned out hadn’t quite matched the hype though, with a pair of half-centuries interspersed with a string of underwhelming scores. Tonight, he allowed Chris Lynn to do the early damage while biding his time at the other end, and by the end of the 12th over, Gill had accumulated just 34 off 31.It was only then that he saw fit to launch, with no less than R Ashwin the chosen target for the teenager’s aggression. He charged Ashwin’s first ball to loft it in the air over long-on. A second six went over backward square leg two balls later, and the half-century was brought up with a late cut that would have had the MCC members purring on the first morning of a Test match. Even as the wickets fell at the other end, Knight Riders’ youngest team member had assumed the role of senior player, and eventually saw them through to the end.Curran’s cerebral knockTwenty-year-old Sam Curran’s fresh-faced demeanour and slight build aren’t exactly redolent of a typical power hitter, but in conjuring up that absorbing unbeaten 24-ball 55, he managed the best strike rate across an innings for Kings XI all season. Each ball was like a chess move, and Curran was one step ahead most of the way. He used his feet to scoop over fine leg, took the pace of the bowler in his strike to whack him over the top, and found angles to manoeuvre the ball into gaps Ashwin might have thought were impossible to pierce. The final over from Harry Gurney was such an astonishing display of mental dominance over the bowler it became impossible to tell whether Gurney was bowling badly or Curran playing the innings of the season. The last six balls yielded 22 as a discombobulated Gurney knew not which variation to try, and in the moment, it appeared to have powered Kings XI to a total that looked slightly above par.Gayle gone earlyPerhaps the most telling blow struck all evening was executed in the first 15 minutes. In a game that would see several players produce vital knocks, a half hour at the crease for Chris Gayle might have been enough to see Kings XI home. Instead, a pair of boundaries in the first over was his lot as Gayle struggles with Gurney’s varied pace and Narine’s guile, with the big man getting frustrated at his failure to find the middle of his bat more regularly. Sandeep Warrier, who had a couple of overs ago sent KL Rahul back to the pavilion, pitched one short of a length to Gayle. It was perhaps shorter than intended, and Gayle would have backed himself to clear the ropes. But with what had happened in the first three overs, Gayle jabbed at the ball early, eager to get himself going. The fielder at deep-backward square had been positioned exactly for that scenario, and it was the first of a number of plans that came together for a Knight Riders’ side that suddenly appear up and running in the tournament again.

Norwich fall to Leeds in Championship playoff semifinalSargent leaves match at halftime with ankle injuryAmerican a doubt for Copa America nowWHAT HAPPENED?

Norwich lost 4-0 to Leeds on Thursday in the second leg of their English Championship playoff semifinal, meaning the Canaries will be stuck in the second division of England for another season in 2024/25. Less than 24 hours after the final whistle, Norwich announced the sacking of head coach David Wagner, too. But more worryingly, Sargent left the field at halftime of the match with a recurrence of an ankle injury that hit him in March.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The Athletic reports that he's now a doubt for the USMNT at this summer's marquee event. Regardless, his campaign was a brilliant one and it will ultimately go down as one of progress – despite the setbacks. The American was sidelined for nearly five months to begin the season, but an emphatic five-month stretch in 2024 saw him score at a prolific rate to send the Canaries climbing towards the top of the table. With 16 league goals, the U.S. international helped earn them a spot in the playoffs, but it wasn't enough to get them over the line.

WHAT DAVID WAGNER SAID

“We have managed him more or less the whole time since he got back from his injury. I think everyone knows this. It is great credit to Josh with what he has done and how hard he has worked. What this means now for the summer? At the minute I have no idea. There is going to be for sure some thorough investigations and assessment of him, to see how serious it is and what he has to do to come back to his best in pre-season.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Sargent has not appeared for the USMNT since 2022, as injuries have hampered his availability. 2024 was supposed to be his return, but a tough string of luck may have hit him again.

Losing Dhoni as a batter always difficult for us – Raina

The Chennai Super Kings batsman struck form after a lean season and lauded Dhoni’s support at the crease against Delhi Capitals

Important to rotate strike and play smartly in Chennai – Raina

Nearly all the accolades, on social media and on commentary, after Wednesday’s match between Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals were reserved for MS Dhoni. The 80-run Super Kings win had it all, when it came to Dhoni: smart captaincy moves, the now-familiar boundary hitting at the death and the blink-and-you-miss-it stumpings. He was named Player of the Match. But he did not steal all the thunder this time. Two old Super Kings hands delivered after a long wait. Suresh Raina scored a well-crafted 37-ball 59 and Ravindra Jadeja’s abilities were on full display, too: a 10-ball 25, returns of 3 for 9 and athleticism on the field. At Super Kings’ den at Chepauk, it is Raina who is the crowd’s favourite after Dhoni, the to Dhoni’s . The cheers Dhoni gets at Chepauk are unmatched, but the only other player who gets close is Raina. He is the highest run-scorer for Super Kings and has consistently been among the top run-getters in nearly every season. This year, however, things have been quite different. Before the match against Capitals, Raina had made 247 runs in 12 games, with one half-century. In the two matches he captained, he looked out of sorts and fell cheaply. Under his captaincy, they lost their first home game of the season. Moreover, there have been questions on the Super Kings’ performances without Dhoni. They have been heavily reliant on their captain, who has done the bulk of the scoring this season. Raina, his deputy, stepped in as captain for two matches but was unsuccessful and there were doubts on whether Raina was feeling the heat without Dhoni.BCCIOn Wednesday, Raina addressed these questions with the bat, and later, at the press conference.”I think I’ve done well for Gujarat Lions as well as a few games for India,” Raina said after the match. “Losing him [Dhoni] as a captain is not an issue, losing him as a batter is always difficult for us.”That’s what happened in those games we lost. He gives us a lot of freedom to play and when he enters, he creates pressure on the opposition. I’ve done well as a captain but I didn’t perform with the bat in those two games. When he’s not there in the team you see the difference. He’s done very well as a captain and a mentor. You’ll probably see me more next season when he says, ‘Okay, I’m done but now you look after.'”So has Dhoni given him any hint about the forthcoming season? “No, it’s not about the hint. It’s as long as he wants to play. You know how he is,” Raina said. And how does Dhoni’s captaincy affect Raina?”See, I’ve played for India under his captaincy, he knows my game, he knows how to plan in the middle overs. He tells me what to do there. He always gives the right sort of advice. Today I told him I felt confident against left-arm spinners, because [Amit] Mishra was bowling really well and he wasn’t giving me any flight with the ball, so I thought let’s take a chance and hit a couple of boundaries. I then told Dhoni ‘I’m going to go hard at him [left-arm spinner J Suchith] because I feel more confident’. He lets you play freely but at the same time gives advice about certain things, which is good to follow.”At the end of 10 overs against Capitals, Super Kings had 53 on the board and had lost Shane Watson for a duck. The Capitals’ spinners were taking control on a slow Chepauk surface but Raina began to change the tempo of the innings, by hitting J Suchith and Chris Morris for boundaries. Once Raina fell, Jadeja joined Dhoni at the crease, and his elevation to No. 5 seemed like another tactical move given Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Jadhav’s dip in form. That move paid off as the duo added 43 off 3.4 overs, and helped Super Kings amass 77 runs off the last overs to finish on 179.BCCI”My plan was to just play through the Powerplay,” Raina said. “They have a few spinners and good-quality fast bowlers. That was the plan, just to stick and rotate the strike. That’s what I was telling Faf too: ‘No need to block the ball. If you’re not getting it, just be in positive intent.’ That’s how he hit two sixes. I think it’s important to play smart cricket in Chennai. After every six overs, the game changes.”Super Kings’ concerns aren’t limited to Rayudu and Jadhav’s form. Openers Watson and Faf du Plessis also have just one half-century to their name. Raina believed this was due to the tough home conditions, with turning tracks in play at Chepauk since the start of the IPL.”Last year we played in two different venues. We played in Pune, where the climate was good, and now in Chennai. In Chennai, you need a lot of character especially when it comes to fitness. Mentally, your character has to be up all the time. You need to constantly rotate the strike. If you have wickets in hand you can always score those extra 30-40 runs and that’s what we did [against Capitals].”The weather has played a key role for us. Take Watson for instance, he played very well for us last year. This year here [in Chennai] he’s been getting good starts but has not been able to convert. But we’ve been bowling really well. This is the best bowling line-up we’ve been having for the last couple of years.”

Erik ten Hag's men fell 4-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in a loss that very much defined how badly their season has gone. As per an exclusive report by The Mirror, there is a group of Man Utd players, who are convinced that the Dutchman will not remain at the helm of the club next season and are also fearful that due to the kind of rut they are suffering, they may not win another game this season.

As per the report, the atmosphere inside the Man Utd dressing room is miserable as Man Utd are currently eighth in the Premier League and are on their way to securing their lowest spot in the Premier League since 1992. Their current lowest finishing position came in 2014 under David Moyes when they finished seventh in the league.

This season has been one full of unwanted records for the Red Devils. With the loss against Crystal Palace, Ten Hag's men brought up their 13th league loss of the season, the most in club history in one season. They also conceded their 55th goal of the season and stand just two goals conceded away from breaching the club record for most goals conceded.

WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

While it still hasn't been confirmed by the club that Ten Hag will be leaving the club, the club has been heavily linked with the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate among others.

Worcestershire spinner Ben Twohig suffers injury playing football

Worcestershire could be without their left-arm spinner for the entire season after he sustained a serious injury

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Apr-2019Worcestershire could be without Ben Twohig for the entire season after he sustained a serious injury. Twohig, the 20-year-old left-arm spinner, is understood to have suffered the anterior cruciate ligament injury while playing five-a-side football.A former England Under-19 player, Twohig made his List A and first-class debuts last season and did well enough to win a run of games in Worcestershire’s Championship side towards the end of the season. It is entirely possible the injury will renew debate over the wisdom of professional cricketers playing football. Ashley Giles, the director of England’s men’s teams, had already made it clear he does not favour the idea.”We’ve got to keep our best players on the park and I’m not sure playing football is the best way of going about that,” he told ESPNcricinfo in January. “If you look at what football does, the benefits from a physiological and fun point of view are outstripped by the dangers.”This injury was not sustained during a training or warm-up session, though. It is understood Twohig was playing a five-a-side game with friends. It is unclear if he was permitted to take part in such a game.

Oshane Thomas five-for, Chris Gayle 77 lead West Indies to share of series

England bowled out for 113 as West Indies end series 2-2

The Report by Valkerie Baynes02-Mar-2019
Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentaryOshane Thomas tore England’s house down, leaving Chris Gayle to build his castle on the demolition site and enjoy the view – king of a drawn series as West Indies won the fifth and final ODI by seven wickets with 227 balls to spare in St Lucia.England’s total of 113 was their lowest in ODIs against West Indies and the defeat was their worst in terms of balls remaining in ODI history. So comprehensive was the defeat, West Indies wrapped things up before the the lunch break normally scheduled between innings. The match was astonishing but, in the context of a series in which every match has been full of record-breaking moments and breath-taking performances, it was another jaw-dropping installment of a contest which ended level at 2-2 after the third fixture, in Grenada, was a washout.Thomas took 5 for 21 in 5.1 overs – his maiden ODI five-for – to be named Man of the Match, claiming four of his wickets as England lost 5 for 2 in 21 balls to end an innings which lasted just 28.1 overs.Gayle looked like single-handedly overhauling the target, smashing 77 off just 27 deliveries, pummeling Chris Woakes and Mark Wood for a total of nine sixes and five fours along the way.Woakes looked to have Gayle out for 31 to a top edge caught at fine leg, but Gayle stood his ground and the delivery was ruled a no-ball by the third umpire for being too high, much to England’s indignation. Gayle proceeded to smack Woakes’s next delivery for a gigantic six which landed atop the pavilion roof.Gayle reached his half-century off just 19 balls, the fastest ODI fifty by a West Indies batsman, beating the 20-ball mark achieved twice by Darren Sammy and poetically broken by Gayle at the ground bearing Sammy’s name.By the time Gayle was out, bowled by a Wood offcutter, West Indies’ work was done at 93 for 2, the winning runs coming from a boundary by Shimron Hetmyer off Tom Curran’s first and only ball of the match, the chase lasting just 12.1 overs.Gayle, who announced before the first ODI in Barbados that he would retire from one-day cricket after this year’s World Cup, amassed 424 runs to be named Player of the Series, adding knocks of 162, 50 and 135 to his latest innings of 77 and hitting a total of 39 sixes to thrill all who watched him.It was the bowlers, however, who set things up. Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite added two wickets apiece to Thomas’s five-for to give West Indies their best imaginable chance of drawing the series.Sheldon Cottrell struck during his second over – the third of the match – with a full inswinger that found Jonny Bairstow’s inside edge and sent leg stump cartwheeling. Cottrell did not have to do much to play a part again when Joe Root sent a Holder delivery straight down his throat at third man. When Brathwaite had Alex Hales out nicking to wicketkeeper Shai Hope, England still looked to be in good hands with Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan, whose century in the fourth ODI was overshadowed by Jos Buttler’s towering 150 off 77 balls, still at the crease. But, with Morgan, Stokes and Moeen Ali all falling cheaply, the tourists were in deep trouble, even with Buttler’s wicket intact.Woakes’ starring role with the bat in Antigua in 2017 was not to be reprised. He struggled to settle and skied the ball to Holder at midwicket for a duck, giving Thomas his third wicket for the match. Two balls later, Thomas removed danger man Buttler with a short, 142kph ball top-edged to Cottrell at deep fine leg for just 23.Holder had Adil Rashid out caught behind and Thomas’s ball to knock over Curran’s stumps and complete his five-for was a beauty.England’s innings could not have been more different to the run-fest of the fourth ODI in Grenada, where they scored 418 for 6. But West Indies showed what they were capable of, following their win in the second match with a gallant chase to reach a total of 389 in the third.

Real Madrid player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Vinicius Jr loves the Champions League! Brazilian brilliant on big occasion yet again as Jude Bellingham bottled up in Bavaria

The South American forward netted twice at the Allianz Arena as he again shone brightest in the latter stages of European competition

When Jude Bellingham went quiet, Vinicius Jr shone brightly. The Real Madrid winger scored twice to make up for a poor showing from his fellow forward, helping Los Blancos fight back to a 2-2 Champions League first-leg draw with Bayern Munich.

Madrid weren't really in the game when they took the lead midway through the first half, as Toni Kroos made the goal, his defence-splitting pass falling to the feet of Vinicius, who finished first time past a sprawling Manuel Neuer. Kroos almost added a second after half-time, too, but Neuer kept his fine curling effort.

But Bayern fought back, and Leroy Sane equalised, lashing home at the near post, before Harry Kane gave them a lead, converting from the penalty spot after Jamal Musiala was tripped in the box.

Vinicius had an answer, though, scoring a penalty of his own after his neat footwork led to Kim Min-jae bringing down Rodrygo. Madrid were far from their electric best, but once again found a way in the Champions League, and they will feel that everything is poised perfectly for a second-leg result.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from the Allianz Arena…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Andriy Lunin (5/10):

Perhaps beaten too easily at the near post for the opener. Sent the wrong way for the penalty.

Lucas Vazquez (4/10):

Threw in a silly tackle to give away the Bayern penalty. Didn't deal with Musiala at all.

Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Didn't have loads to do defensively, but kept the ball moving when Madrid had it.

Nacho (5/10):

Favoured over Tchouameni at centre-back, and never looked secure.

Ferland Mendy (6/10):

Struggled against the pace and trickery of Sane early on, but locked things down later.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Aurelien Tchouameni (6/10):

Had a hard time picking up the roaming Kane. Offered some interesting probing passes, but Madrid could have done with him asserting himself more readily.

Federico Valverde (6/10):

Ate up ground, and was up for the midfield fight. Played a few nice passes, too.

Toni Kroos (8/10):

Played an excellent threaded pass to set up Vinicius' goal. Pinged it around throughout. Confusing to see him subbed off.

Jude Bellingham (5/10):

On the ball a lot, but was mostly shepherded out of dangerous areas by a well-organised Bayern defence. Far from his best game.

Getty ImagesAttack

Vinicius Jr (9/10):

Took his goal well, and created chaos on the left. Quick feet and superb pass led to the penalty, which he then converted with a cool stroke down the middle. Excellent.

Rodrygo (5/10):

Went on a few winding runs, but didn't get in goalscoring positions too often. Not his best.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Eduardo Camavinga (5/10):

Barely involved in his 25 minutes.

Brahim Diaz (6/10):

Ran at Bayern defenders immediately. Caused problems after coming on.

Luka Modric (6/10):

Added some composure to the midfield.

Joselu (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Carlo Ancelotti (6/10):

Made some interesting calls, including leaving Camavinga out. His team were poor for long stretches, but turned it on when mattered, and somehow snagged a 2-2.

'Paul came back different' – Jose Mourinho gives strong opinion on Pogba's four-year doping ban as he pinpoints moment ex-Man Utd star stopped seeing football as 'most important thing'

Jose Mourinho has pinpointed the moment that football was no longer the “most important thing” for Paul Pogba, as he serves a four-year doping ban.

Frenchman returned to Old Trafford in 2016Worked with enigmatic Portuguese coachFailed drugs test in the September of 2023WHAT HAPPENED?

Portuguese tactician Mourinho returned French midfielder Pogba to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, with the world transfer record broken as an £89 million ($110m) deal with Juventus was put in place. Two big characters were always likely to butt heads at some point, and so it proved.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Pogba struggled for consistency throughout his time at Old Trafford and retraced steps to Juventus as a free agent in 2022. He has endured a tough time back in Italy, with injury problems initially holding him back. The 2018 World Cup winner is now serving a ban for failing a drugs test in September 2023.

WHAT MOURINHO SAID ABOUT POGBA

Mourinho has told of that unfortunate situation: “The only thing I say is that it happens with almost everybody in some moments of your career: you lose a little bit the sense of who you are and what you have to be. The season after France won the World Cup, I think Paul came back different. The World Cup brought him into a dimension where football was not the most important thing for him. Sharing the philosophy of everyone; everyone with the same level of responsibilities. I am not enjoying Paul’s situation at all.”

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Mourinho had hoped that tough love would bring the best out of Pogba, as he became aware of the need to commit fully to his professional endeavours, but the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss says he lacked the required support of those above him. He added on trying to deal with Pogba: “When you are supported by the power, by the hierarchy, the message that passes through is very positive in the group. When you are not supported … because the player is more important or what the player represents is more important – then you are in a fragile situation. Even if you are a coach with so much experience as was my case.”

Guptill returns to leave Munro running out of time

Jimmy Neesham and Todd Astle have been preferred to Ish Sodhi and Doug Bracewell for the three-match series against Bangladesh

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Feb-2019Martin Guptill is in line to return to New Zealand’s one-day side following a back injury after being named in the squad to face Bangladesh. His comeback could leave Colin Munro just one more chance to push his World Cup claims when he replaces rested captain Kane Williamson for the third match of the series.Munro was dropped for the fourth ODI against India but earned a reprieve in the final match of the series when Guptill went down with a disc injury which also kept him out of the T20I series. Now, however, after Guptill came through a fitness test before the first ODI against Bangladesh*, it appears the selectors have their preferred pairing in him and Henry Nicholls at the top of the order.Watch NZ v Ban live

“We’re delighted to have Martin back on the park for this series; he’s a world-class player and an integral part of our one-day side,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “He and Henry did a good job opening up in Hamilton against India and they’re a combination we want to see some more of in this series, before Colin returns to the top for the third game with Kane resting.”Williamson’s absence for the final match of the Bangladesh series is part of a pre-planned rest for a player who is key in all three formats for New Zealand. Tom Latham will captain in his absence.Jimmy Neesham and Todd Astle have been preferred in allrounder and spin-bowling positions ahead of Ish Sodhi and Doug Bracewell as the selectors continue to assess their options ahead of the World Cup.”Todd’s another who is returning from a knee injury and after getting limited opportunities against India, we’re keen to see more of him in this series,” Larsen said. “Jimmy’s impressed us with the bat this summer.”A full-strength pace attack has been named with Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry all included. There is some debate around Southee’s position following diminishing returns in one-day cricket and he played just one of the five ODIs against India. There is no place in the squad for wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert who struck a superb 84 off 43 balls in the first T20I against India. One of the decisions the selectors need to make as whether to take a back-up wicketkeeper in their final World Cup squad or use Nicholls.Squad Kane Williamson (capt, games 1 and 2), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Colin Munro (Game 3), Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Ross Taylor, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee*
