Oshane Thomas five-for, Chris Gayle 77 lead West Indies to share of series

England bowled out for 113 as West Indies end series 2-2

The Report by Valkerie Baynes02-Mar-2019
Scorecard and ball-by-ball commentaryOshane Thomas tore England’s house down, leaving Chris Gayle to build his castle on the demolition site and enjoy the view – king of a drawn series as West Indies won the fifth and final ODI by seven wickets with 227 balls to spare in St Lucia.England’s total of 113 was their lowest in ODIs against West Indies and the defeat was their worst in terms of balls remaining in ODI history. So comprehensive was the defeat, West Indies wrapped things up before the the lunch break normally scheduled between innings. The match was astonishing but, in the context of a series in which every match has been full of record-breaking moments and breath-taking performances, it was another jaw-dropping installment of a contest which ended level at 2-2 after the third fixture, in Grenada, was a washout.Thomas took 5 for 21 in 5.1 overs – his maiden ODI five-for – to be named Man of the Match, claiming four of his wickets as England lost 5 for 2 in 21 balls to end an innings which lasted just 28.1 overs.Gayle looked like single-handedly overhauling the target, smashing 77 off just 27 deliveries, pummeling Chris Woakes and Mark Wood for a total of nine sixes and five fours along the way.Woakes looked to have Gayle out for 31 to a top edge caught at fine leg, but Gayle stood his ground and the delivery was ruled a no-ball by the third umpire for being too high, much to England’s indignation. Gayle proceeded to smack Woakes’s next delivery for a gigantic six which landed atop the pavilion roof.Gayle reached his half-century off just 19 balls, the fastest ODI fifty by a West Indies batsman, beating the 20-ball mark achieved twice by Darren Sammy and poetically broken by Gayle at the ground bearing Sammy’s name.By the time Gayle was out, bowled by a Wood offcutter, West Indies’ work was done at 93 for 2, the winning runs coming from a boundary by Shimron Hetmyer off Tom Curran’s first and only ball of the match, the chase lasting just 12.1 overs.Gayle, who announced before the first ODI in Barbados that he would retire from one-day cricket after this year’s World Cup, amassed 424 runs to be named Player of the Series, adding knocks of 162, 50 and 135 to his latest innings of 77 and hitting a total of 39 sixes to thrill all who watched him.It was the bowlers, however, who set things up. Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite added two wickets apiece to Thomas’s five-for to give West Indies their best imaginable chance of drawing the series.Sheldon Cottrell struck during his second over – the third of the match – with a full inswinger that found Jonny Bairstow’s inside edge and sent leg stump cartwheeling. Cottrell did not have to do much to play a part again when Joe Root sent a Holder delivery straight down his throat at third man. When Brathwaite had Alex Hales out nicking to wicketkeeper Shai Hope, England still looked to be in good hands with Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan, whose century in the fourth ODI was overshadowed by Jos Buttler’s towering 150 off 77 balls, still at the crease. But, with Morgan, Stokes and Moeen Ali all falling cheaply, the tourists were in deep trouble, even with Buttler’s wicket intact.Woakes’ starring role with the bat in Antigua in 2017 was not to be reprised. He struggled to settle and skied the ball to Holder at midwicket for a duck, giving Thomas his third wicket for the match. Two balls later, Thomas removed danger man Buttler with a short, 142kph ball top-edged to Cottrell at deep fine leg for just 23.Holder had Adil Rashid out caught behind and Thomas’s ball to knock over Curran’s stumps and complete his five-for was a beauty.England’s innings could not have been more different to the run-fest of the fourth ODI in Grenada, where they scored 418 for 6. But West Indies showed what they were capable of, following their win in the second match with a gallant chase to reach a total of 389 in the third.

Real Madrid player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Vinicius Jr loves the Champions League! Brazilian brilliant on big occasion yet again as Jude Bellingham bottled up in Bavaria

The South American forward netted twice at the Allianz Arena as he again shone brightest in the latter stages of European competition

When Jude Bellingham went quiet, Vinicius Jr shone brightly. The Real Madrid winger scored twice to make up for a poor showing from his fellow forward, helping Los Blancos fight back to a 2-2 Champions League first-leg draw with Bayern Munich.

Madrid weren't really in the game when they took the lead midway through the first half, as Toni Kroos made the goal, his defence-splitting pass falling to the feet of Vinicius, who finished first time past a sprawling Manuel Neuer. Kroos almost added a second after half-time, too, but Neuer kept his fine curling effort.

But Bayern fought back, and Leroy Sane equalised, lashing home at the near post, before Harry Kane gave them a lead, converting from the penalty spot after Jamal Musiala was tripped in the box.

Vinicius had an answer, though, scoring a penalty of his own after his neat footwork led to Kim Min-jae bringing down Rodrygo. Madrid were far from their electric best, but once again found a way in the Champions League, and they will feel that everything is poised perfectly for a second-leg result.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from the Allianz Arena…

Getty ImagesGoalkeeper & Defence

Andriy Lunin (5/10):

Perhaps beaten too easily at the near post for the opener. Sent the wrong way for the penalty.

Lucas Vazquez (4/10):

Threw in a silly tackle to give away the Bayern penalty. Didn't deal with Musiala at all.

Antonio Rudiger (6/10):

Didn't have loads to do defensively, but kept the ball moving when Madrid had it.

Nacho (5/10):

Favoured over Tchouameni at centre-back, and never looked secure.

Ferland Mendy (6/10):

Struggled against the pace and trickery of Sane early on, but locked things down later.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMidfield

Aurelien Tchouameni (6/10):

Had a hard time picking up the roaming Kane. Offered some interesting probing passes, but Madrid could have done with him asserting himself more readily.

Federico Valverde (6/10):

Ate up ground, and was up for the midfield fight. Played a few nice passes, too.

Toni Kroos (8/10):

Played an excellent threaded pass to set up Vinicius' goal. Pinged it around throughout. Confusing to see him subbed off.

Jude Bellingham (5/10):

On the ball a lot, but was mostly shepherded out of dangerous areas by a well-organised Bayern defence. Far from his best game.

Getty ImagesAttack

Vinicius Jr (9/10):

Took his goal well, and created chaos on the left. Quick feet and superb pass led to the penalty, which he then converted with a cool stroke down the middle. Excellent.

Rodrygo (5/10):

Went on a few winding runs, but didn't get in goalscoring positions too often. Not his best.

Getty ImagesSubs & Manager

Eduardo Camavinga (5/10):

Barely involved in his 25 minutes.

Brahim Diaz (6/10):

Ran at Bayern defenders immediately. Caused problems after coming on.

Luka Modric (6/10):

Added some composure to the midfield.

Joselu (N/A):

No time to make an impact.

Carlo Ancelotti (6/10):

Made some interesting calls, including leaving Camavinga out. His team were poor for long stretches, but turned it on when mattered, and somehow snagged a 2-2.

'Paul came back different' – Jose Mourinho gives strong opinion on Pogba's four-year doping ban as he pinpoints moment ex-Man Utd star stopped seeing football as 'most important thing'

Jose Mourinho has pinpointed the moment that football was no longer the “most important thing” for Paul Pogba, as he serves a four-year doping ban.

Frenchman returned to Old Trafford in 2016Worked with enigmatic Portuguese coachFailed drugs test in the September of 2023WHAT HAPPENED?

Portuguese tactician Mourinho returned French midfielder Pogba to Manchester United in the summer of 2016, with the world transfer record broken as an £89 million ($110m) deal with Juventus was put in place. Two big characters were always likely to butt heads at some point, and so it proved.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Pogba struggled for consistency throughout his time at Old Trafford and retraced steps to Juventus as a free agent in 2022. He has endured a tough time back in Italy, with injury problems initially holding him back. The 2018 World Cup winner is now serving a ban for failing a drugs test in September 2023.

WHAT MOURINHO SAID ABOUT POGBA

Mourinho has told of that unfortunate situation: “The only thing I say is that it happens with almost everybody in some moments of your career: you lose a little bit the sense of who you are and what you have to be. The season after France won the World Cup, I think Paul came back different. The World Cup brought him into a dimension where football was not the most important thing for him. Sharing the philosophy of everyone; everyone with the same level of responsibilities. I am not enjoying Paul’s situation at all.”

GettyDID YOU KNOW?

Mourinho had hoped that tough love would bring the best out of Pogba, as he became aware of the need to commit fully to his professional endeavours, but the former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss says he lacked the required support of those above him. He added on trying to deal with Pogba: “When you are supported by the power, by the hierarchy, the message that passes through is very positive in the group. When you are not supported … because the player is more important or what the player represents is more important – then you are in a fragile situation. Even if you are a coach with so much experience as was my case.”

Guptill returns to leave Munro running out of time

Jimmy Neesham and Todd Astle have been preferred to Ish Sodhi and Doug Bracewell for the three-match series against Bangladesh

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Feb-2019Martin Guptill is in line to return to New Zealand’s one-day side following a back injury after being named in the squad to face Bangladesh. His comeback could leave Colin Munro just one more chance to push his World Cup claims when he replaces rested captain Kane Williamson for the third match of the series.Munro was dropped for the fourth ODI against India but earned a reprieve in the final match of the series when Guptill went down with a disc injury which also kept him out of the T20I series. Now, however, after Guptill came through a fitness test before the first ODI against Bangladesh*, it appears the selectors have their preferred pairing in him and Henry Nicholls at the top of the order.Watch NZ v Ban live

“We’re delighted to have Martin back on the park for this series; he’s a world-class player and an integral part of our one-day side,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “He and Henry did a good job opening up in Hamilton against India and they’re a combination we want to see some more of in this series, before Colin returns to the top for the third game with Kane resting.”Williamson’s absence for the final match of the Bangladesh series is part of a pre-planned rest for a player who is key in all three formats for New Zealand. Tom Latham will captain in his absence.Jimmy Neesham and Todd Astle have been preferred in allrounder and spin-bowling positions ahead of Ish Sodhi and Doug Bracewell as the selectors continue to assess their options ahead of the World Cup.”Todd’s another who is returning from a knee injury and after getting limited opportunities against India, we’re keen to see more of him in this series,” Larsen said. “Jimmy’s impressed us with the bat this summer.”A full-strength pace attack has been named with Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry all included. There is some debate around Southee’s position following diminishing returns in one-day cricket and he played just one of the five ODIs against India. There is no place in the squad for wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert who struck a superb 84 off 43 balls in the first T20I against India. One of the decisions the selectors need to make as whether to take a back-up wicketkeeper in their final World Cup squad or use Nicholls.Squad Kane Williamson (capt, games 1 and 2), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Colin Munro (Game 3), Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Ross Taylor, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee*

Mandhana tops ICC ODI women's rankings for batsmen, Satterthwaite jumps 10 spots

Mandhana overtook Ellyse Perry and Meg Lanning while Amy Satterthwaite displaced Mithali Raj from fourth place

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Feb-2019India opener Smriti Mandhana has topped the ICC’s women’s ODI rankings for batsmen after scoring 196 runs in three ODIs against New Zealand women recently. Mandhana moved up three places and displaced Ellyse Perry from the top, who is now second, followed by her team-mate and captain Meg Lanning. New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite jumped up 10 spots to be ranked fourth, followed by India ODI captain Mithali Raj, who was earlier in fourth place.Mandhana struck her fourth ODI century in Napier before scoring an unbeaten 90 in Mount Maunganui when India won the ODI series 2-1 as part of the ICC Women’s Championship. It extended Mandhana’s stellar run in ODIs which has seen her as the highest run-scorer since the beginning of 2018. In 15 innings during these 13 months, she has scored 865 runs with two centuries and eight half-centuries at an average of 72.08 and strike rate of 93.11. Champions League? Man Utd will be lucky to avoid the Conference League if Erik ten Hag doesn't realise he's got massive issues to resolve in the final weeks of the season

The Dutchman's baffling tactics have turned the Red Devils into the most disjointed side in England, and there may be no way back

Manchester United have been reduced to a laughing stock. Even after dealing a huge blow to Liverpool's title aspirations at Old Trafford on Sunday, most of the post-match talk centered around another horrendous performance from Erik ten Hag's side, and Jurgen Klopp was among those to stick the boot in.

When asked if he will be cheering United on when they host Arsenal in their penultimate home game of the season, Klopp replied: "Probably if we are still around then [in the race] it would be great. But Arsenal are a good football team and if they [United] play like today Arsenal will win that game, I'm 100 percent sure. I'm really sorry to say that, but this is a matter of fact."

It was a petty dig from the Liverpool boss, born more out of frustration than anything else, but even the most blindly loyal United fan would have struggled for an argument to the contrary. The Reds should be kicking themselves for dropping two points after such a dominant performance against a team that looked more like they were battling relegation than pushing for Champions League qualification.

The 2-2 draw effectively ended United's hopes of returning to Europe's elite table, but things could still get a lot worse if Ten Hag doesn't quickly realise he has got massive issues to resolve.

GettyState of play

On the surface, a draw against Klopp's in-form Liverpool was a positive result for United, but it actually completed a nightmare week that saw them lose serious ground on fourth-placed Tottenham. Ten Hag's men had to settle for a point at Brentford after seeing Mason Mount's stoppage-time goal cancelled out, somehow lost at Chelsea despite holding a 3-2 lead after 99 minutes, and once again failed to see out a vital win at the weekend.

United do still have a game in hand on Aston Villa, who occupy what is likely to be an extra Champions League spot for the Premier League in fifth, but Unai Emery's side only need 11 points from their final six games to stave off the Red Devils. And even if they do manage to cut the gap, Villa's goal difference is superior.

The FA Cup remains a route to salvation for United. Europa League qualification will be the reward if they go all the way, and they will be expected to at least reach the final after being handed a favourable last four draw against Coventry City. But it's entirely possible that they will end up falling short, especially with Manchester City or Chelsea awaiting in the showpiece at Wembley.

United cannot afford to put all their eggs in that basket, as the likes of West Ham, Newcastle and Chelsea are queuing up to steal sixth place away from them. Dropping as low as seventh means Conference League football next season, and that would be a fatal blow for Ten Hag. The question is: how does he stop United's slide?

AdvertisementGettyNonsensical approach

"What do we want to be? That is, we want to be the best transition team in the world. We want to surprise.” Ten Hag laid down his blueprint for success at United last summer, after guiding them to third in the Premier League and delivering their first trophy in five years. And with Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund and Kobbie Mainoo leading their charge, that goal has been achieved to an extent, as very few teams have been able to cope with the Red Devils' pace on the counter.

The problem is, they've been absolutely awful in defence. The midfield presses high while the back four sits deep in a low block, which leaves acres of space for the opposition to take advantage of.

This nonsensical approach has forced Andre Onana into action far too often, with United giving up 20 or more shots in eight of their last nine Premier League outings. Liverpool managed 28 at Old Trafford, and 34 against United in the 0-0 draw at Anfield back in December, while bottom-half Brentford had 31 in the shockingly one-sided meeting between the two sides at the Gtech Stadium on March 30.

They simply cannot continue in this vein. The post-Sir Alex Ferguson era has been littered with disappointment, but there has never been a United side quite so easy to play against as Ten Hag's current iteration.

Getty'You wonder what is going on'

Incredibly, Ten Hag insisted that United are "improving" after the draw with Liverpool, as he talked up the "amazing potential" of his young squad. It's one thing to defend your players, but the Dutchman has come across as oblivious at best and completely ignorant at worst when facing up to the media.

When was the last time United outplayed anyone? And how many times have they got themselves into strong positions, only to gift opponents a way back into the game?

It feels like Ten Hag is the only one who can't see the glaring weaknesses that his managerial counterparts are looking to exploit week after week. Even Gary Neville, who gave David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer more leeway than most other observers when results and performances took a turn for the worse, has been unable to get his head around Ten Hag's tactical approach.

"Against Liverpool, the same bad habits, the same bad structure, the same defensive errors and the same gaps in midfield," the United legend told . "They were all there, but there is still a level of effort and desire. It is baffling, some of the things you see. There are parts of the team where you do wonder what is going on in the coaching aspect during the week and what Ten Hag's instruction is.

"It's very, very strange to see. No other team in the league plays as badly out of possession as they do. They are such an odd team to watch. It's fun at times, entertaining, but mad."

GettyThe Casemiro problem

United's midfield woes have been underpinned by the alarming decline of Brazil international Casemiro – the five-time Champions League winner who set the club back a staggering £70 million ($88m) less than 18 months ago. It may be necessary for them to accept a major loss on that investment this summer, given the 32-year-old now looks a shadow of the all-conquering player he was in his prime at Real Madrid.

This version of Casemiro wouldn't get in the starting XI at any other top European club. Ten Hag is seemingly letting him survive on the strength of his past reputation, because he is offering absolutely nothing to the collective cause.

The veteran midfielder played the full 90 minutes against Liverpool, despite Christian Eriksen being among the substitutes, and completed just 67 percent of his passes in the game – the worst of any player in the starting XI. He also lost possession on 16 occasions as the visitors targeted his ageing legs.

Scott McTominay is currently out injured, and if Ten Hag doesn't trust Eriksen to start, then it would be logical to at least try Mason Mount in a holding role alongside Mainoo, because Casemiro is definitely not up to it.

Attackers across the continent once feared the Brazilian, but now they are dribbling past him with ease, and he clearly can't keep up with the pace of Premier League matches anymore. If Ten Hag doesn't recognise that a change is necessary at his point, then United have no chance of ending their miserable season on a high.

Ebadot Hossain, Andre Fletcher give Sylhet Sixers consolation win

Chasing 166, Chittagong Vikings lost the opportunity to push for a place in the first qualifier and were bowled out for 136

The Report by Peter Della Penna01-Feb-2019How the game played outSylhet Sixers showed the firepower with bat and ball that was inconsistent through various points of the season to upend the Chittagong Vikings by 29 runs. Vikings paid dearly for a poor display in the field in which seven chances were missed whereas Sixers’ collective effort was top-drawer, including a stunning one-handed effort by Jason Roy at the midwicket boundary to put his name in the hat for the catch of the tournament.Andre Fletcher and Sabbir Rahman were two of the Sixers batsmen to capitalise on the missed opportunities. The two forged a 65-run third-wicket stand that built a solid platform after Sixers were sent in. Mohammad Nawaz provided a sharp burst after Sabbir’s dismissal, making 34 off 19 balls before both he and Fletcher were dismissed off successive balls by Hardus Viljoen. The South Africa seamer made an immediate impact in his first match of the season for Vikings taking four wickets, but the rest of the bowling unit was let down by a ragged catching effort.Sparked by Ebadot Hossain and Taskin Ahmed, Sixers claimed two wickets in the first seven balls of the chase. Vikings captain Mushfiqur Rahim did his best to lead a recovery after entering in the second over but ran himself out on a risky call with the required rate nearing 12 an over. Soon after, Ebadot and Wayne Parnell wiped out the tail.Turning points Andre Fletcher was on 46 in the Sixers innings at 92 for 2 in the 12th over when he flicked a full toss from Cameron Delport to deep midwicket but the chance went straight through Nayeem Hasan’s hands Yasir Ali was on 27 in the Vikings chase when he pulled a half-tracker from Alok Kapali that looked certain for a six, but Roy sprinted 20 yards to his left and propelled himself with a full-extension dive to pluck it with his left hand Dasun Shanaka tried to tip and run a quick single in the 16th off Parnell, but Jaker Ali reacted quickly from behind the stumps to sprint forward, scoop and flick from three yards to run-out Mushfiqur for 48Star of the dayEbadot had taken just one wicket in three T20s since making his debut for Sixers one week earlier, but he took four in a disciplined spell against Vikings. It began with Cameron Delport beaten for pace attempting to pull in the second over to sky a catch to mid-on. He then got Mosaddek Hossain skying a drive to mid-off in the 12th before two more in the 18th – Dasun Shanaka top-edging a pull to fine leg and then Hardus Viljoen bowled after missing a slog. The big missThere were any number of them to choose from Vikings’ horrendous day in the field, but a comical double-whammy occurred in the 17th over, off the bowling of Hardus Viljoen. Mohammad Nawaz was on 14 when he drove in the air to Nayeem Hasan at mid-off, who spilled the chance lunging forward. He still had the presence of mind to scoop the ball and fire an accurate one-bounce throw to Viljoen over the stumps at the non-striker’s end with Fletcher, on 58, five yards out of his crease. But Viljoen clumsily fumbled the relay to ensure both batsmen were reprieved on the same ball.Where the teams standVikings lost the opportunity to push for a place in the first qualifier, finishing on 14 points. Though they are level with Rangpur Riders, the net run-rate advantage is heavily in Riders favour, meaning Vikings will face either Rajshahi Kings or Dhaka Dynamites in the first eliminator. Sixers end the season two points out of the playoffs on ten.

Inquiry committee submits report on Rahul Johri, next step unclear

The report on the allegations of sexual harassment against the BCCI CEO has been handed over to the CoA, who will decide the next course of action

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Nov-2018The Inquiry Committee appointed to probe charges of sexual harassment against BCCI’s chief executive officer Rahul Johri has submitted its findings in a sealed envelope to the committee of administrators (CoA) on Wednesday morning. A decision on the findings is likely to be taken soon, possibly even by the end of the day.Immediately after submitting its findings, the three person inquiry committee, comprising Justice Rakesh Sharma (retired judge of Allahabad High Court), Barkha Singh (former head of the Delhi Commission for Women) and Veena Gowda (human rights activist and lawyer), sat down in a meeting with the two-person CoA headed by Vinod Rai (former Comptroller & Auditor General of India) and including former India women’s captain Diana Edulji. It is understood that the executive summary of the Inquiry Committee’s report will be made public but what happens next is not clear. Till last week there was ambiguity over how the COA would treat the verdict of the committee, whatever the majority result, and whether it would accept or debate it. However, it remains to be seen if both Rai and Edulji would be on the same page if the majority verdict did not find Johri guilty. ESPNcricinfo understands that Edulji, who was not originally not in favour of appointing the inquiry committee, was keen to study the findings and not readily accept them as the final word.It was Edulji who wanted Johri to be removed as soon as an allegation of sexual harassment against him surfaced on October 12 on Twitter as part of the #metoo movement. Rai favoured Johri being given the time to have his say and he was given a week to respond against that original charge. Johri denied any wrongdoing in his response, which led to the appointment of the inquiry committee. The committee – whose original deadline was November 15 – had heard the testimony of several people, including Johri. Also deposing were two women who live overseas and testified via Skype. It is understood that one of the women complainants alleged misconduct while she was Johri’s colleague at a previous media organisation, while the alleged incident with the second woman took place overseas during his tenure as BCCI CEO.
