As stated, Manchester United saw 13 faces leave the club over the course of the summer, with players such as Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Jadon Sancho all departing. However, one player who didn’t leave Old Trafford and might have been expected to was midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The 32-year-old, who joined the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, is now in the final year of his contract, and there was an expectation that he would be moved on. However, that didn’t happen in the transfer window, but there has been talk it could still occur as some transfer windows around Europe remain open.

It was claimed earlier this week that Anderlecht are interested in signing the Denmark international, as the club’s chief executive, Jesper Fredberg, is a “long-term admirer” of the player.

However, the Belgian side is running out of time to get a deal completed, as their transfer window shuts on the 6th of September. There could also be a stumbling block, as the midfielder’s £150,000 wages may prove a sticking point. As Eriksen’s future at Old Trafford continues to be uncertain, the Red Devils have now been offered the chance to replace him.

Man United offered the chance to sign experienced free agent

According to HITC, Manchester United are one of a number of clubs to be offered the chance to sign Yusuf Yazici on a free transfer. The 45-cap Turkey international had been with French side Lille since 2019, but he now finds himself without a club after they decided not to renew his contract.

This report states that Turkish giants Galatasaray are leading the race for the attacking midfielder, but they also face competition from AC Milan, Lazio, and a host of Premier League clubs, including Man United. It goes on to add that Manchester United would only be able to add Yazici, who was once described as being “incredible” by former Arsenal player Mesut Özil, to their squad if they moved Eriksen on.

This isn’t the first time that United have been linked with a move for Yazici, as in 2019 the Red Devils were looking to sign him from Trabzonspor, and they were ready to bid €27m plus €4m in add-ons (a total of £26m) to add him to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad. However, they missed out on his signing, and he instead joined Lille.

The meteoric rise of 'introvert' Marco Jansen

He has had a breakout series after stepping in for the injured Nortje, and has now been picked in South Africa’s ODI squad

Marco Jansen is a man of few words, until he steps onto a cricket field.”I am a bit of an introvert but when I’m on the field, that’s the one place where I want to express myself,” he said, after his first stint as an international player. “All those emotions just show the passion and love I have for the game. If there is one place where I feel I can show my passion and emotions, it’s on the field.”Not only will Jansen’s debut series be remembered for being the most successful by a South African seamer in a three-match contest, but also for the exchange he had with his Mumbai Indians team-mate Jasprit Bumrah at the Wanderers. South Africa were going after the Indian tail in an attempt to ensure the target was as low as possible, Jansen bounced Bumrah several times and then sprayed him with unpleasantries. At one point the two were eye to eye (or rather Jansen was looking down at Bumrah, who is a foot shorter than him) and there was the threat of something more serious happening but Jansen backed off while Bumrah smirked. Turns out, it was all just fun and games. “I played with Bumrah in the IPL. We are good friends but sometimes on the field things get heated,” Jansen said. “You’re playing for your country so you are not going to back down for anyone, and he did the same. There’s no hard feelings, it was just in the heat of the moment, two players, giving their all for the country.”For Jansen, being able to represent the nation has come a little quicker than he thought it would. Despite spending most of 2021 as a non-playing member on South Africa’s Test tours (to Pakistan and West Indies), in a squad with seven specialist seamers, he thought he would have to bide his time. “I have been in the Test squad previously but I didn’t expect it (to play). I was hopeful that I would get picked,” he said. His first outing, at SuperSport Park, did not go as planned after he went wicket-less for 18.2 overs and appeared to struggle with his lengths. “I didn’t start the way I wanted to. I was very, very nervous. It’s normal for every player to get nervous,” he said.Marco Jansen has had a breakout series after stepping in for Anrich Nortje•AFP via Getty Images

Then, he took the wicket of none other than Bumrah, who edged to third slip. Jansen bowled 85 more overs in the series and took 18 for 244, including a best of 4 for 31. He showed the advantage of variation but also the importance of height to extract awkward bounce off the South African surfaces. “I’m really glad that after that innings, I came back and contributed to the team,” he said. Now, he has a new challenge. With Anrich Nortje still out of action because of a persistent hip injury, Jansen has been included in the ODI squad. He has just 13 List A caps and has not played in the format for almost two years, since March 2020, so once again, he isn’t quite sure he will get game time. “This is a call up I did not expect,” he said. “I’m very glad and honoured to be selected in the squad. I just want to go there and try to learn as much as possible and if I get an opportunity, hopefully I’ll grab it with both hands.”Jansen’s inexperience extends across white-ball formats. He has also made just 13 T20 appearances but two of them have been at the IPL. That’s the tournament that brought Jansen to the fore. He was part of the Mumbai Indians outfit and took his twin brother Duan, also a left-arm seamer, currently playing for North West, with him to the tournament. “We know everything about each other and he is my best friend. It’s weird in some way that we are basically the same player,” Jansen said. “He came along as a net bowler. He practiced with us. And he also learnt a few things from us as well. It was a great experience for him and for us to experience that together. We never would have thought we would be sitting here, both of us, playing the sport we love.”While it may seem like it now, things didn’t always come easy for Jansen. He remembers “back at high school, especially, I didn’t play nearly as well. I didn’t even get picked for sides.” Think about that and everything you’ve seen of him over the last few weeks and it may leave you at a loss for words too.

Celtic could unearth O’Riley 2.0 in swoop for "phenomenal" £7m+ gem

da supremo: The summer transfer window officially slams shut for business on Friday and Celtic do not have much time left to complete their incoming and outgoing business.

da brwin: Brendan Rodgers is yet to make an outfield signing of a player who was not a part of his squad from the 2023/24 campaign, as Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo have joined on permanent deals after their loan spells in Glasgow.

He has also brought in two goalkeepers – Viljami Sinisalo and Kasper Schmeichel – to replace Joe Hart, who retired at the end of last season after three years at Parkhead.

To date, though, there have not been any outfield players to improve the squad that ended last term as the Scottish Premiership and SFA Cup champions.

There could be movement in the final days of the summer transfer window, however, as one of Rodgers' stars looks set for a move away from the club.

Attacking midfielder Matt O'Riley is the subject of interest from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, who are reportedly set to sign him for a deal worth up to £30m.

His exit from the Scottish side would be a big blow for the club after his terrific performances at the top end of the pitch throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Why losing Matt O'Riley would be a huge blow

The Denmark international has been a consistent performer for the Premiership champions and has proven himself to be an influential figure on the pitch since his move from England in 2022.

Ange Postecoglou swooped to sign the young whiz from League One side MK Dons in January 2022 for a reported fee of £1.5m, which means that Celtic would make a gigantic profit on him if they cash in for more than £25m.

He produced four goals and three assists in 16 matches during the second half of that season, before going on to register three goals and 12 assists in 38 league games during his first full campaign in Scotland.

The left-footed magician then exploded under Rodgers last season by showcasing his quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals on a regular basis for the Hoops.

O'Riley registered 18 goals and 13 assists in 37 appearances from a central midfield position in the Premiership for Celtic as they won the division.

As you can see in the table above, the 23-year-old talent was the club's most influential figure at the top end of the pitch when it came to scoring and creating goals in the top-flight.

No player provided as many goals, assists, big chances created, or key passes as O'Riley did in the Premiership for Celtic, which illustrates how important he was to the team.

Whilst the Bhoys may look to replace him with an immediate first-team addition, like LAFC's Mateusz Bogusz, Rodgers could also land a future star who could be developed into the next O'Riley at Parkhead.

Celtic's interest in teenage sensation

Earlier this month, Swedish outlet Fotboll Direkt claimed that Celtic are one of a number of teams interested in signing Hammarby youngster Bazoumana Toure.

The report stated that the Hoops have sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old talent in action over the summer as they consider a move for the gem.

It was also revealed that Crystal Palace, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are also keeping tabs on the Ivorian ace, which suggests that there could be strong competition for his signature from major leagues in Europe.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that it would take an offer of more than £7.3m to tempt Hammarby into cashing in on their starlet before the end of the window.

It now remains to be seen whether or not Celtic, Palace, Frankfurt, or Leverkusen are willing to offer £7m+ to land the Ivory Coast international to bolster their respective squads over the coming days before Friday's deadline.

Selling O'Riley to Brighton for £30m could free up some funds for the Hoops to play with and Toure could come in as a future star for the Scottish giants.

Why Celtic should sign Bazoumana Toure

The 18-year-old is an up-and-coming talent who could be developed into a top-quality player for Celtic in the years to come, which means that they could invest in him at £7m+ in the hope that he is worth £30m or more in the future.

He would not be a like-for-like replacement for O'Riley but the teenage whiz is another left-footed attacking midfielder who has the potential to contribute with goals and assists.

Whilst the Danish ace typically operates in a central midfield role, with a license to get forward into attacking positions in a dominant Celtic side, Toure is a left-sided player who has also been deployed as one of two number tens in behind a centre-forward with Hammarby.

The Ivorian sensation, whose form was hailed as "phenomenal" by video scout Elijah Michiels, has enjoyed a strong start to his first-team career in the 2024 Allsvenskan season so far.

As you can see in the table above, Toure has provided quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals from an attacking midfield position, whether that has been wide left in a three or centrally in a two behind a striker.

At the age of 18, he has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and progress further and there would not be any immediate pressure for him to perform at Parkhead, given that he has yet to prove himself outside of Sweden.

Rodgers could bring him in as a long-term project and look to help him improve on the training pitch over the months and years to come, to develop him into O'Riley 2.0 as another left-footed midfielder who can score and create goals on a consistent basis.

A soma deu 137 votos.

He’s waiting for a move: Aston Villa keen on £21m Gomez upgrade

da blaze casino: Aston Villa's campaign got off to a flyer as Unai Emery masterminded victory over West Ham United in their Premier League curtain-raiser.

da wazamba: Many onlookers will have their reservations for a side that have taken a significant step in their development by qualifying for the Champions League before the summer, dubious over their ability to survive the trials and tribulations of a rigorous, multi-focused campaign.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

But Villa have showcased their rising quality as a behemoth of English football, and with one more signing, they might be a monster to be feared…

Aston Villa transfer news

That final signing may well arrive in the form of a full-back, with The Athletic reporting that Aston Villa hold an interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, with Anfield's longest-serving first-teamer assessing his options.

But a host of clubs are interested in the Liverpool dynamo and it might be wise to turn toward an alternative option. Luckily, Villa are also looking at Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida, who might just be the real deal.

According to Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad – relayed by Soccernews – Monchi is looking to sign Geertruida this month, with the 24-year-old among the standout performers under new Liverpool boss Arne Slot last term.

Lutsharel Geertruida for the Netherlands.

The Netherlands international – who is said to be waiting to see 'which clubs are willing to take action' – has stepped into the final year of his contract, and while RB Leipzig have also shown an interest, the Premier League side may well hold the advantage.

With Geertruida valued at €25m (£21m), Leipzig are struggling to cough up the dough and might need to cash in on a squad option first, leaving Emery's unit in pole position to complete a swoop.

What Lutsharel Geertruida would bring to Aston Villa

Principally a right-back, Geertruida has impressed through his positional fluidity over in the Dutch Eredivisie, playing a crucial role in a trophy-laden period in Feyenoord's recent history.

Feyenoord's Lutsharel Geertruida

The athletic defender has also been known to feature in central defence and even in a holding midfield role, with his strong ball-playing quality enabling success across a range of roles.

Indeed, as per FBref, he ranked among the top 2% of positional peers in the Eredivisie last season for goals scored and pass completion, the top 10% for passes attempted and the top 4% for progressive passes per 90, emphasising the kind of technical quality that Emery would welcome to the fold.

Moreover, Geertruida excelled in drifting infield last season, which was a requirement in Feyenoord's system. The 6 foot 1 star's ability to operate in different areas and showcase various elements of the ball-playing craft speaks volumes of his suitability under Emery's wing.

His press resistance and security on the ball are no doubt arresting elements for the Villa manager, but his roundedness and quality in defensive phases might just see him arrive in the Midlands this month, brought in ahead of fellow target Gomez.

How Geertruida compares to Joe Gomez

There's no doubt that Gomez is a talented defender, and, moreover, tried and tested in the Premier League. His “renaissance” – as noted by writer Joel Rabinowitz – was wonderful to witness for Reds supporters last season, but it did underline past problems that might dissuade Emery and his transfer team.

Joe Gomez in action against Manchester City

The England international also bears an injury record that leaves plenty to be desired, recorded to have missed 245 matches due to injury/illness throughout his Liverpool career.

Like Geertruida, the 27-year-old is a versatile defender, playing across the backline under Jurgen Klopp last season and earning a call-up to Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad as a result, though he didn't feature.

But he was culpable of a glut of poor performances throughout Liverpool's 2022/23 season, even branded as "finished" by Liverpool podcaster Graeme Kelly after the final game of the campaign, as Liverpool drew 4-4 to relegated Southampton.

Having lost Klopp's trust previously and been unused for nine of the final ten matches before that Saints show, it did look like his time on Merseyside was up.

His resurgence has spoken loudly on his character and resolve, but Emery might be keen to shape his outfit with an up-and-coming talent in Geertruida – especially considering that FSG have transfer-listed Gomez for around €40m (£34m).

When collating Gomez and Geertruida's metrics from the 2023/24 season, what can we ascertain? Both are clearly blessed with that 'complete' skillset that is oh-so coveted over on English shores, but Geertruida outstrips his positional peer in the duel, creatively and from an athletic standpoint.

Of course, the Premier League would represent a big step up for the player, but Villa would offer a stable platform from which to build future success.

BBC pundit Alan Shearer has also noted that Gomez "makes too many mistakes", and so when bringing all the facets together, perhaps it would be wise to move for Feyenoord's talented ace, who would relish the chance to prove himself in the Premier League.

Analyst Ben Mattinson has hailed the Dutchman as "a pivotal player for Slot’s title-winning Feyenoord team", and now he has the chance to translate his qualities to England, where he might just prove to be the dynamic defender that Emery needs to shore up his backline and ensure that success is found across multiple roads this year.
