New Zealand's Super Over heartbreaks

Over the past 12 months, they’ve had matches go into a Super Over three times and each time they’ve come up second best

Ian Smith might as well author a book on New Zealand’s tryst with Super Overs. Kane Williamson’s men have featured in four Super Overs in the last year including the historic 2019 World Cup final. On each occasion New Zealand have lost, the last three coming in T20I series at home against England and India, including twice now in three days just this week. So imagine the state of Smith’s heart, having commentated on three of those matches, including the close finish in Hamilton on Wednesday. On Friday, Smith was happy he was not put on the commentary roster for the final segment of the fourth T20 in Wellington. Not that it had any favourable impact for New Zealand, who suffered another shocking defeat in another Super Over. For those whose nerves are too frayed to relive the finishes all over again, ESPNcricinfo has spared you the gory details and put together handy summaries instead.January 31 2020, Wellington, v IndiaHaving choked once again after entering the final over of the match in a winning position, New Zealand faced Jasprit Bumrah in the second Super Over in three days. Even before it started, New Zealand had already suffered a setback: Martin Guptill did not pad up, having erratically bumped into Scott Kuggeleijn while fielding. That meant Tom Seiffert and Colin Munro walked out to face a resurgent India.Seifert took strike. He already had irritated Bumrah after making the Indian strike bowler wait a few extra seconds during his final over in regulation time. The drama continued. Bumrah could not believe what happened next as Seifert was dropped twice in the first three balls of the Super Over, the second of which went for a four. But next delivery, Bumrah had Seifert caught at deep point.Amazingly Bumrah did not once resort to his go-to delivery – the yorker. He pitched back-of-length mostly. Possibly that was because he was wary of New Zealand lapping him in case he faltered with the yorker. Nonetheless, he finished the over strongly as Munro tried to paddle a fuller delivery, but failed.India’s target was 14. Southee had a discussion with the injured Kane Williamson and New Zealand head coach Gary Stead. All three nodded, he had to bowl again. KL Rahul shut the case in the first two deliveries, picking 10 runs. Although Rahul went for another boundary and got caught next delivery, Virat Kohli ran a calm double first and then punched his fist in jubilation with a robust four.Jimmy Neesham went moaning on Twitter. New Zealand were speechless. And, even though he was not even on commentary to call New Zealand’s downfall, Smith would have been numb in disbelief.January 29 2020, Hamilton, v IndiaTo begin with India did not even know there would be a Super Over. Defending nine off the final over in regulation time, Mohammed Shami started it watching Ross Taylor bludgeon a full toss high over midwicket for six and then finished it slinging in a pitch-perfect yorker that bowled Taylor, which meant the scores were tied. Indian captain Virat Kohli walked up to the umpires to shake hands, only to be told there would be a Super Over. Then Jasprit Bumrah, who had bowled the second-most expensive spell in his T20 career, struggled to find the precision he is known for giving away 17 runs. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, experienced hands at handling pressure situations, were at the crease. Tim Southee, New Zealand’s most experienced fast bowler was once again entrusted by Williamson to bowl it, despite his mixed history with Super Overs.New Zealand have played seven Super Overs in T20is and Southee has bowled the last five of those. But only once before today did he have to defend. It was in a group match of the 2012 World T20 in Pallekele, where New Zealand needed to defend 17 again and to do that he had to keep Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels quiet. Southee started with a no ball, Gayle crashed him for a six. He finished the over with a full toss, Samuels lobbed him high over a leaping Martin Guptill to seal the match with another six.Today, Southee started strongly, giving away only three runs off his first two balls to Rohit. But Rahul then smartly moved outside his off stump and lapped him for an easy four, putting the pressure back on Southee. Rohit returned strongly, whacking an in-the-slot ball and a length ball for consecutive sixes, leaving Southee and New Zealand shaking in disbelief. Again.November 10, 2019, Auckland, v EnglandThe Super Over was nowhere in sight when Jimmy Neesham, defending 16 runs off the final over against England, had just given three runs off his first three balls including a wicket. Then Chris Jordan walloped a six, ran a two, and lapped a four leaving Neesham smiling in disbelief.Southee failed twice in executing the yorker and both went sailing over the straight boundary as Eoin Morgan and Johnny Bairstow set a target of 18 for New Zealand, two more than the World Cup final. This time, however, New Zealand were not so far behind on boundary countback, needing just one more to level things up.Unfortunately for the hosts, Martin Guptill was tied down at the non-striker’s end as Tim Seifert attempted to negotiate the variations of Jordan. Although Seifert did get a four, off the second legitimate delivery, the next was a dot followed by his dismissal, courtesy of a brilliant lunging catch from Morgan running back at cover. Guptill could then only run a single against a perfect yorker, as Jordan wrapped up the match with another dot ball.July 14 2019, Lord’s, v EnglandYou haven’t really forgotten how this one played out have you?

Liverpool "following" elite new winger amid Luis Diaz links to Barcelona

da lvbet: Liverpool have been linked with a number of new wide players amid doubts around the futures of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz, and they've now turned their interest to one who ranked ahead of Jude Bellingham in the Ballon d'or voting.

Liverpool targeting new wingers

da dobrowin: The Reds have been linked with a move for numerous wide players in recent weeks, although it may be tricky to acquire certain individuals before Jurgen Klopp's replacement as manager is sorted.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto could decide that he wants a new challenge in the summer, having come as far as he can at Molineux, and Liverpool have reportedly sent scouts to watch him in action. Granted, injuries have affected the Portuguese sensation, but he has the technical brilliance and end product – he has nine assists in the Premier League this season – to be a fantastic signing.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich ace Jamal Musiala is believed to have turned down a new deal worth £150,000 per week, instead potentially preferring a move to the Premier League. Both the Reds and Manchester City are interested in snapping him up.

A statement signing of some kind could be ideal for Liverpool at the end of the season, in terms of showing that there is still plenty of life after Klopp, especially if they lose one or both of Diaz and Salah – the former is known to dream of playing for Barca while the Egypt superstar will once again draw plenty of interest from the Middle East.

Liverpool eyeing superstar who bested Bellingham

According to journalist Ciro Venerato [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are one of the clubs who are keen on signing Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia this summer.

Kvaratskhelia is arguably one of the most exciting attacking players in Europe currently, becoming a true superstar at Napoli afterf helping them win the Serie A title last season. He is so special that he has even been compared to both Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, which says all you need to know about his magic as a footballer.

Napoli forwardKhvicha Kvaratskhelia.

The 23-year-old may not have lit things up this season as much as last time around, but he still has nine goals and four assists in Serie A in 2023/24 to date, and he finished ahead of Jude Bellingham in the Ballon d'Or list, finishing in 17th place last year.

Kvaratskhelia's dribbling quality, unpredictability and eye for goal could make him an incredible signing by Liverpool, and he could even be considered an upgrade on Diaz. The Colombian is a brilliant player, but his end product has been questioned at times, not always proving to be a killer when it really matters, certainly in comparison to Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez this season.

'Knew I wouldn't succeed at the top level bowling at 125kph' – Deepak Chahar

The fast bowler talks about the work he has put in to evolve into the white-ball bowler that he is today

Shashank Kishore17-Dec-2019

Associated Press

Deepak Chahar has come a long way since the memorable 8 for 10 on Ranji Trophy debut for Rajasthan in 2010-11. For all his first-class experience, it was the IPL and his powerplay spells during Chennai Super Kings’ victory title-winning run in 2018 that shot him into the limelight. His ability to swing the new ball made him MS Dhoni’s calling card in the powerplay.A year on, after becoming a T20I regular, Chahar is eyeing a regular berth in India’s ODI squad. With Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah out injured, Chahar is likely to get a long run too. But he isn’t thinking about that just yet and wants to just keep doing well whenever he gets a chance.”The next six months are obviously very important,” Chahar said ahead of Wednesday’s second ODI against West Indies in Visakhapatnam. “All of us dream of playing for India in all formats. I was only playing T20s, and now I am playing one-dayers too, so it’s great. The main focus is on fitness, I need to stay fit and play all the matches, and be available for selection for all games. I have had injuries in the past, so I’ll be careful about that. That’s the main focus.”When Chahar first broke through, he was largely an outswing bowler to the right-handers. Once the new ball lost its shine, he would mostly be used as a defensive option by captains. An obsession to improve his pace left him injured and effectively out of the selection radar for “four-five years” in between. He eventually took the long road up a tricky hill after stints at the MRF Pace Academy. In 2016, Rising Pune Supergiant first signed him up when their coach Stephen Fleming was impressed with his swing bowling and lower-order hitting. While an opportunity in the starting XI didn’t come, he was part of the team’s plans for the future. These plans materialised when the same team management, headed by Fleming and Dhoni, signed him at Chennai Super Kings.Chahar has only played a dozen matches for India, but he understands that to become a long-term prospect he has to work on various aspects of his bowling, which he is doing one at a time: from swing at 125kph to increased pace (high 130s), to adding new variations, to bowling to different fields. His understanding of his own game gives a peek into his mindset and to how he has evolved into a thinking cricketer, not just someone who swings the new ball and delivers overs in the powerplay.”When I played Ranji Trophy, I focused on line and length and swing,” Chahar explained. “But I struggled in between, so from there to the Indian team is a tough road. If you want to go from Ranji Trophy to the Indian team, you have to play a lot. More fitness. You have to play Duleep Trophy. It’s a longer road. But since I could do well by performing in the IPL, so somewhere in between, my focus shifted to the white ball.”So how has he turned into the bowler that he is aiming to be? It’s simple: by bowling at 140kph with with swing to boot. These aspects have been married to variations that he has honed over time in the nets.”You need pace,” he said. “It’s tougher to swing the white ball, unlike the red ball. So many bowlers swing the ball both ways in Ranji Trophy. But it’s tougher with the white ball. It’s not just the shine, you need to swing the ball with your action. So I worked on that and increased my pace.”Now I bowl the slower bouncer, and I have been working on my yorker, which has actually helped my bowling. I am confident that if someone hits me for a couple of sixes, I can york the batsman. Last year, in an IPL game in Chennai, I prepared a lot. I knew it wouldn’t swing much there, so I worked on my variations. I bowl three overs in the powerplay for CSK, so you have to bowl yorkers. But you need to keep improving in cricket. Yorker, wide yorker. I try everything.”BCCI

Chahar is open about his fondness for white-ball cricket, and reveals that he finds the 50-over format the hardest to adjust to.”In T20s, the main thing is for you to save yourself,” he said. “You have to bowl four overs, and you have to make sure you don’t get hit. If you bowl four overs, give 24 runs and not get a wicket, that’s good bowling. In Tests, you have to attack. If you give runs but pick up wickets, it’s good for the team. But in one-dayers, you have to do a bit of both – pick up wickets and not give away runs.”You have to beat the situation – what does the team demand: stop runs or get a batsman out. So one-day is more difficult than Tests and T20s. I have played a lot of one-day cricket with India A side, so that’s helped. So I have an idea. I used to struggle a bit in the middle overs earlier.”In the powerplay, you know it’s two-three overs and then you have to contain the runs. And at the death, you know they will try to hit you. But in the middle overs, I couldn’t do well. But I am learning. I have just played two matches internationally, so I will keep learning.”Chahar also explained how he has improved as a bowler since he first broke through in 2010-11, helped along by the understanding that swinging the ball at 125kph might not take him places.”When I played my first season of Ranji Trophy, I used to bowl at around 125. So I struggled in between, for four-five years, I had injuries too, and that was because I was trying to increase my pace,” he explained. “I knew I couldn’t succeed at the top level at that pace.”I knew I had to get to 140. Since I was a child, I have tried to get to 140 – 135-137. That’s the deadliest ball. You can play 150 on a flat pitch, but if it swings at 140, it’s more difficult. In between, for four-five years, when I was injured and also out of my domestic side, I changed many things. In my diet, in my action, to get more speed. You need variations too. It’s become difficult too.”For the middle overs, you have four fielders out. But I am used to bowling with two fielders out. So I get the benefit of that. In the middle overs, variations are key, and you shouldn’t be predictable. You have to bowl according to your field. You need to bowl to the four fielders at the boundary. If they are trying to hit you for sixers, you want them to hit where your fielders are, so if they mistime one, you get the wicket.”

Leeds fumbled homegrown Summerville with sale of "unplayable" ace

da imperador bet: Leeds United are currently on course to secure automatic promotion straight back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, having been relegated from the top-flight at the end of last season.

da 888: The Whites brought in German head coach Daniel Farke last summer in an attempt to lead them to glory and they are second in the table with 13 games left to play.

They are above Ipswich Town on goal difference and two points ahead of Southampton, with all three sides on the same number of matches played, whilst Leicester City are nine points clear at the top.

Farke won the Championship title with Norwich City on two occasions and is now looking for a third promotion to the Premier League, with the help of the exciting squad he has available to him.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

One player who has been particularly important to the club's success on the pitch this season has been terrific forward Crysencio Summerville.

The Dutch wizard has been a constant threat on the left wing and one of the top performers in his position in the division this term, alongside former Leeds starlet Jack Clarke.

When Leeds sold Jack Clarke

In the summer of 2019, then-sporting director Victor Orta decided to cash in on the talented young forward as Tottenham Hotspur swooped in to secure his services.

The Premier League side reportedly splashed out an initial fee of £8.5m to sign the teenage winger and sent him back on loan at Elland Road for the 2019/20 campaign.

Clarke had broken through into the first-team under Marcelo Bielsa during the previous season and made 24 appearances in the Championship, including the play-offs, before Spurs decided to move for him.

Jack Clarke

He produced two goals and two assists from the left flank in those 24 outings, although only four of those matches were as a starter, but his return on loan did not go as well.

The young gem made one Championship appearance for Leeds before Tottenham opted to send him out on loan to Queens Park Rangers for the second half of the campaign, in which time he played six times for the London-based side in the second tier.

Clarke failed to make the grade in the Premier League with Spurs during his time there and was eventually sold to Sunderland, after a six-month loan spell, in the summer of 2022.

Over the last two seasons, the 23-year-old wizard has been a constant threat to opposition defences in the Championship and has been an outstanding performer, which suggests that Orta fumbled Leeds' own homegrown version of Summerville back in 2019.

Crysencio Summerville's season in numbers

The former Feyenoord youngster, who arrived at Elland Road in the summer of 2021, has emerged as the star of Farke's team in the second tier this season for Leeds.

He has been in phenomenal form as both a scorer and a creator of goals as a right-footed winger who predominantly plays on the left side of the attack.

Summerville has racked up 15 goals in 30 appearances in the division – four more than any of his teammates have managed – and only missed nine 'big chances', with an xG of 11.62.

This shows that the 22-year-old whiz has been ruthless in front of goal as he has rarely passed up a good opportunity to find the back of the net for the Whites.

The electric gem has also provided his fellow attackers with eight assists in those 30 Championship games, and only Georginio Rutter (11) has produced more assists within the Leeds squad.

Leeds duo Daniel Farke and Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville may, however, argue that he should have more assists to his name. The exceptional dynamo has an xA of 9.33 and has created 16 'big chances', yet has only been rewarded with eight assists for his efforts.

Along with his quality as a scorer and a creator, the Dutch gem also has the ability in possession to get supporters off their seats with his dribbling, as he has completed 2.3 dribbles per game. He can get Elland Road rocking by committing defenders and driving the ball past players to push his team up the pitch.

Clarke is a player who offers similar qualities as another right-footed winger who plays on the left flank in the Championship, which is backed up by his impressive statistics for Sunderland this season.

Jack Clarke's season in numbers

The 23-year-old has been in exceptional form for the Black Cats throughout the 2023/24 campaign, despite their turbulence in the dugout so far.

They are on their third manager of the season in Mike Dodds, who is in interim charge for the second time after Michael Beale – who replaced Tony Mowbray – was sacked earlier this week.

Despite the seemingly constant change in the coaching staff, Clarke, who was once hailed as "unplayable" by journalist Josh Bunting, has fired in an outstanding 15 goals in 33 Championship matches for Sunderland.

He has only missed four 'big chances' and plundered those 15 goals from 10.25 xG, which suggests that the talented whiz has been more clinical than Summerville as they have the same number of goals but the Black Cats gem has managed it with fewer big chances missed and less xG.

As you can see in the table above, they have both been superb options for their respective sides as scorers and creators on a regular basis from the left wing.

Like the Leeds star, Clarke has been let down by his teammates in the final third as they have only rewarded him with four assists from an xA of 7.93, with 11 'big chances' created in total. This shows that they have not made the most of his creative quality this season.

However, the former Whites academy graduate did register 11 assists from seven 'big chances' created during the 2022/23 campaign, which could even it out somewhat.

What is clear, though, is that Summerville and Clarke are both mercurial stars who have taken the EFL by storm on the left wing with their immense attacking quality.

That is why Leeds, and Orta in particular, may look back on the decision to cash in on him when they did as a mistake as they could have developed their own homegrown version of the current first-team star by working with the former England U21 international to fulfill his potential in Yorkshire.

A partida

Edilson bateu e igualou o placar: 1 a 1.

ROBERTO SALVA PRÓPERA NO FIM DO JOGO E PARTIDA ACABA EMPATADA

Best ST since Auba: Arsenal agree personal terms for £67m "monster"

da betobet: Arsenal finished second in the Premier League for the third season running, but you’d be blind not to see the progress that Mikel Arteta has driven across the years of his tenure.

da bet vitoria: Injuries, contentious officiating and plain bad luck all played their part in the Gunners’ setbacks in front of goal this term, but there’s also been a yawning hole at the front of the ship which has impeded Arteta’s pursuit of silverware.

To be sure, Arsenal will be frustrated with having failed to secure a new number nine across the past several transfer windows, but there’s so much to like about this team, balanced, dynamic and youthful.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetalooks dejected after the match

However, to emerge from the looming market without a brand-new centre-forward would be a travesty. Luckily, Arteta, Andrea Berta and co are on the case.

Why Arsenal need a striker

The fact Mikel Merino has been forced into 12 matches as a makeshift striker this season emphasises the injury crisis and need for more firepower at the Emirates Stadium.

Saying that, the fact Merino scored six goals and laid on three assists across those fixtures underscores his quality and Arteta’s tactical expertise.

Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have missed much of 2025 with respective injuries, and Arsenal are ready to sign a new marksman.

Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres is one of the principal targets, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealing two months ago that the Gunners have been developing strong interest in the Sweden international. Sporting director Berta, in particular, is felt to be championing the potential addition.

However, Arteta feels Arsenal’s future is best served in a different direction. Indeed, there’s another name on the list. You know who it is.

Arsenal reach agreement for new ST

As per Arsenal sources, an agreement on personal terms has been reached for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with Arsenal no doubt buoyed by the revelation that exorbitant claims of a £93m price tag are wide of the mark.

Talks are also ongoing between Arsenal and the Bundesliga club, who want a swift resolution after giving Sesko a gentleman’s agreement he could leave in a year when the Premier League outfit came knocking last summer.

With a €80m (£67m) release clause in his contract, as per Sky Germany, Arsenal will need to wrap this one up swiftly, especially with rivals Chelsea and Liverpool both registering their interest too.

What Benjamin Sesko would bring to Arsenal

Arsenal have been searching for a prolific goalscorer for several years now. You’d have to date back to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to find the last time a Gunner surpassed 20 goals in a single Premier League season.

Aubameyang might not be too fondly remembered in north London after joining Barcelona on a free transfer in February 2022, having been stripped of his captaincy due to a disciplinary issue, but who could argue against the Gabon forward’s prowess?

He scored 92 goals and provided 21 assists across just 163 appearances for Arsenal, worth the club-record £60m outlay that was paid to Borussia Dortmund for his four years of service.

To have such a prolific star back in the mix would be a brilliant move for the development of Arteta’s project, and Sesko might just be the man for the job.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskocelebrates

While Sesko, 22, has yet to reach his peak, the signs of greatness are there. This season alone for Leipzig, he has scored 21 goals and added six assists from 45 appearances, 40 starts.

There’s a reason the 6 foot 5 striker has been dubbed “the next Erling Haaland” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, with his rangy profile, sinewy strength and electric pace all combining to make him the prototypical modern striker for a top outfit worth their salt.

He’s raw, full potential as yet untapped, and thus there would be an element of risk in Arsenal sealing a deal. However, Sesko is one of the most exciting young forwards on the map, hailed as a ball-striking “monster” by analyst Ben Mattinson.

But the potential is indeed staggering, and there’s every chance he could become the club’s best striker since the days of Aubameyang, who was one of the most prolific players in Europe during his finest days in an Arsenal shirt.

Perhaps he could even eclipse the former talisman. The Slovenia international has missed 18 big chances across his two campaigns in the German top flight, but he’s also put away 27 goals, as per Sofascore.

Moreover, this term he has averaged 4.1 successful duels per game, indicating an energy and combativeness that will serve him well in the harsh environs of the Premier League.

That and his brutish power. Frankly, the ingredients are all there for a superstar, and if Sesko is already serving prolifically in the Bundesliga, backed up by impressive underlying data, there’s every reason for Arsenal fans to start getting optimistic about a deal being completed.

With the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka all serving chances for him on a silver platter, this might be a move that is lauded across years to come, should Arteta get his man and provide his side with their finest centre-forward since Aubameyang.

Mitchell ruled out of second South Africa Test and Australia T20Is

The top-order batter has been carrying a long-term foot injury and will now aim to be fit for the Australia Test series

Stead: Williamson unlikely for Australia T20Is, Boult is available

Daryl Mitchell has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa and the T20I series against Australia in an attempt to recover from a long-standing foot injury.Mitchell, who averages 53.46 in Tests, has been carrying the problem for around six or seven months and was rested from the final T20I against Pakistan in January, but it has been decided he needs a longer period on the sidelines to give himself the best chance of being fit for the two-Test series against Australia.Related

Santner goes 'the other way' to rediscover his Test bowling

“We took the opportunity to rest him a little earlier but after seeking medical advice on this as well it’s likely that he needs a longer period of time,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. “It’s really tough, because there’s not a lot breaks coming up in the next wee while so thought this gives us nearly three weeks to try and give him the chance of the best recuperation from it.”There’s no guarantees this will still work in that period of time but we are very hopeful that it will improve his chances of getting through a longer stint with us.”New Zealand have not called up a replacement for Mitchell with Will Young the spare batter in the squad and he could come in as a like-for-like swap. However, there remains a chance the side may be rebalanced with Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner moving up the order and another pace bowler brought in with Stead confirming the uncapped Will O’Rourke remained in contention for a debut.”[Will Young] is definitely one of the options,” Stead said. “Will’s there as back up [and] Glenn Phillips has shown he’s more than useful and it could be shaped differently. We are very happy with the squad we have. Daryl’s obviously a huge loss, though, he’s been instrumental in a number of outstanding batting performances but it’s important for him and us that we get this right long term.”Meanwhile, Kane Williamson is unlikely to be available for the T20Is against Australia – a format where he is captain – as his wife is expecting their third child. However, Trent Boult could come into consideration for those matches with the left-arm quick not having any franchise commitments at that time.”Trent’s available if we want to select him,” Stead said. “Him and I are still having conversations…hopefully in the next couple of days to nail down what that looks like.”
