De Klerk puts on a big show to script series win for South Africa

Masabata Klaas, Ayabonga Khaka, Tazmin Brits, Lara Goodall and Marizanne Kapp play key hands as South Africa win with lots to spare

They might have swept the T20I series, but Pakistan are finding the ODIs a tougher nut to crack, conceding the series at the first time of asking, losing the second game by six wickets to fall 2-0 behind. The star of the show for South Africa on Monday was Nadine de Klerk, who first returned 4 for 32, and then hit a 30-ball 24 not out as South Africa chased down the modest 169-run target in 34 overs. She wasn’t the only star performer for South Africa on the day, though. When they bowled, after Pakistan opted to bat on winning the toss, Masabata Klaas and Ayabonga Khaka contributed with wickets, three and two respectively. And Tazmin Brits, Lara Goodall and Marizanne Kapp chipped in with the bat in the chase. But de Klerk stood out. She picked up the first three Pakistan wickets to fall, inside her first two overs. The medium pacer struck with her first two deliveries, in the eighth over, getting both Muneeba Ali and Sadaf Shamas caught behind by wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta. First ball of her next over, she found a way through Sidra Ameen’s defences to hit the stumps.Pakistan were 20 for 3 in 9.1 overs at that stage, and Klaas and Khaka got their first wickets not long after, reducing Pakistan to 49 for 6 in the 18th over. There was a fightback.Aliya Riaz, who had walked out at No. 5, and Fatima Sana, the No. 8 batter, took the fight to the South Africans. They stitched together a stand of 114 for the seventh wicket, Riaz scoring 53 in 86 balls, with three fours, and Sana hitting 69 in 87 balls, with ten fours, to give Pakistan something to work with. But, again, once they were separated, the end came early, with de Klerk, who had returned 3 for 23 in the first game, picking up her fourth wicket when she sent back Umm-e-Hani.It didn’t seem like a lot of runs. Almost exactly what Pakistan had scored in the first game (165) when responding to South Africa’s 292 for 4, and South Africa put up a similarly strong performance with the bat in their chase on this occasion.Captain Laura Wolvaardt didn’t last long, falling to Sadia Iqbal after scoring 13 in an opening stand of 41 with Brits. But Brits (45 in 54 balls) and Goodall (36 in 53) got the chase on track with a 40-run stand for the second wicket. It was fairly straightforward for South Africa after that, and though Sune Luus fell for 10, Kapp’s 29 not out in 28 balls and de Klerk got the job done with lots to spare. The third game will be played in Karachi, the same as the first two, on Thursday.

Man Utd make verbal contract offer to "monster" with £62m release clause

da marjack bet: Manchester United have now made contact to offer a big salary to a “monster” forward in the summer, according to a new report.

Amorim reacts to Man Utd defeat at Spurs

da wazamba: The Red Devils were unable to overcome a 13th-minute goal from James Maddison on Sunday afternoon, as they were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur. It was another frustrating and bitterly disappointing day for United and Ruben Amorim, who said his job “is so hard” as he deals with an out-of-form squad and an injury list that now has 12 players on it.

“I have a lot of problems,” Amorim told Sky Sports, via BBC Sport. “My job is so hard, but I am here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs, and I will try to win again.”

The former Sporting boss went on to add that he is not worried about himself, he is focusing on his players and improving the team: “I am not worried. I understand our fans and what the media think about it. I hate to lose; that feeling is the worst.

“The rest I am not thinking about. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation and my job; I am confident on my work, and I just want to win games. The place in the table is my worry – I am not worried about me.”

Man Utd offer contract to Victor Osimhen

One aspect that continues to let United down week in and week out is lack of goals in the team, but that is something that INEOS are looking to address. According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, relayed by Caught Offside, Man United have tabled a verbal contract offer to Victor Osimhen, as they look to sign him in the summer from Napoli.

Victor Osimhen celebrates for Victor Osimhen.

The Nigeria international looks set to leave the Italian side this summer on a permanent basis after his season-long loan spell at Galatasaray. As well as United offering a contract, Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the forward and have offered Osimhen a similar deal.

Both clubs are ready to trigger his €75 million release clause, which is roughly £62 million, but at this stage Osimhen hasn’t given an answer to either to press ahead and speak to his club.

The 26-year-old was linked with a move to Chelsea or Saudi Arabia back in the summer, but a deal didn’t work out, and instead of being frozen out by Napoli, Osimhen decided to join Galatasaray on loan. The forward, who has been described as a “monster” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 12 goals in 17 Süper Lig games as well as being on form in the Europa League.

For United, signing a new striker in the summer must be a top priority for Amorim and INEOS. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both struggled to make an impact in front of goal, and, given Hojlund has not scored in the Premier League for over 10 games now, he is someone who the Red Devils could look to cash in on so they can bring in a player like Osimhen.

United need to move players on in the summer to raise funds, and despite his struggles, Hojlund could be someone who brings in a decent amount of money, given his age, and that could help United pay the £62 million release clause of Osimhen.

Rain-hit day memorable for Wagner, but not much else

Chris Rushworth completes five-wicket haul as 36 overs are added to 35 lost on day one

Neil Wagner scored 72•Getty Images

Neil Wagner, who struck a career-best 72 for Somerset against Warwickshire, will long-remember the second day of their weather-damaged LV=Insurance County Championship tussle at Edgbaston, but nobody else will.To the 35 overs lost on day one, another 36 were wiped out on day two which ended with Warwickshire on 112 for 3 in reply to the visitors’ 215.Somerset were lifted to 215 by a century stand for the ninth wicket between New Zealand all-rounder Wagner (72 from 78 balls) and Josh Davey (46, 80). It is still a modest total but represents a strong recovery from the wreckage of 37 for 6. Chris Rushworth took 5 for 47 – the 32nd haul of five or more wickets of his career.Warwickshire captain Will Rhodes (42, 90 balls) then kept his side’s reply from early ruin in this mid-table duel which may still yield a decisive result. Both sides have nothing to lose so might as well take a positive approach to the season’s dying embers. After Somerset resumed on the second morning on 180 for 8, Wagner and Davey continued to bat with few alarms. They took their alliance to 119 in 25 overs before being parted in controversial fashion.Wagner, having hit 11 fours and two sixes and just passed his previous career best (70), was aghast to be adjudged caught behind off Olly Hanon-Dalby, evidently thinking the ball had clipped either pad or stumps. His sense of injustice only heightened when the innings was wrapped up next ball as Davey skied Rushworth to long off.Warwickshire’s reply started badly when Kraigg Brathwaite’s run of ever-diminishing returns – 16, 9, 9, 8, 3, 0 – continued when his off-stump was plucked out by Lewis Gregory. Brathwaite fell in a brilliant first over by Gregory which could have brought a wicket every ball, but Rob Yates and Rhodes survived to add 53 in 16 overs before the former edged a Jack Brooks outswinger to wicketkeeper James Rew.The light, perpetually moderate, closed in even further after lunch and Rhodes and Alex Davies survived for an hour in low cloud with impending rain and floodlights on before the umpires took the players off.Rhodes lifted Davey to extra cover in one of the two slivers of play that followed before the light closed in for the final time. Only Wagner will recall this staccato day – unless the small crowd happened to include a connoisseur of watching covers being taken on and off – in which case, he or she had a treat because they were taken on and off with great speed and efficiency and considerable flair.

Mitchell Marsh has been named Australia’s T20 captain for the tour of South Africa, making him a frontrunner for the role on a permanent basis leading into next year’s World Cup.South Australia left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson has earned his first international call-up alongside allrounders Aaron Hardie and Matt Short for the three-match series which starts in late August and are Australia’s first T20 games since last year’s World Cup where the hosts went out in the group stage.Marsh takes the job vacated by Aaron Finch’s international retirement earlier this year although his appointment is currently just for the three matches in South Africa. The selectors will make a decision on the long-term captain after this year’s ODI World Cup, where Australia will be led by Pat Cummins, with a good chance they will unite the white-ball roles under one name, putting Marsh in a strong position to lead in both formats.”Mitch has long been a senior player within the white-ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at international level,” national selector George Bailey said. “We look forward to him taking that step in South Africa.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green and David Warner have been rested from the T20Is following the Ashes and will join for the ODIs. However, Steven Smith is included and Bailey confirmed he would open against South Africa following his stunning BBL performances for Sydney Sixers last season. Ashton Agar was ruled out of the T20Is as he continues to recover from a calf strain but will be available for the one-dayers.The trio of new faces in the T20I squad come on the back of impressive form in the BBL last season. Johnson had a breakout season for Brisbane Heat where he stood out operating at the death and then translated that form into the Sheffield Shield with South Australia.Hardie, who plays for Perth Scorchers, was the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 460 at a strike-rate of 141.10, while Short was only narrowly behind him with 458 striking at 144.47. Short earned an IPL deal with Punjab Kings on the back of his BBL season where he also claimed 11 wickets to be named the player of the season. Hardie has also been included the squad for the ODIs in South Africa and India.Left-armer Jason Behrendorff returns to the international fold and could play his first T20Is since the tour of West Indies in 2021.”Aaron, Spencer and Matt have been outstanding in the BBL and identified as potential national players of the future,” Bailey said. “This tour is a great opportunity for all three to demonstrate those skills in a national team environment.”Aaron has impressed in recent outings for Australia A as well as for the Scorchers while Matt has blossomed with extra responsibility at the top of the order for the Strikers.”Spencer’s left-arm pace and bounce was highly effective in his first season for the Heat. This trip will be a fantastic experience for all three and the chance to play their first games for their country.”From those who featured at last year’s T20 World Cup there is no place for Matthew Wade or Kane Richardson, but Bailey said he expected Wade to feature in the series against India which follows the ODI World Cup and the South Africa tour was seen as an opportunity to get some games into Josh Inglis.Australia T20 squad vs South Africa: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Sean Abbott, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

Worth 2x more than Kyogo: Celtic star proved that he could play for Bayern

da premier bet: Thrashed 7-1 away to Borussia Dortmund not too long ago, Scottish champions Celtic showcased their notable improvement on the Champions League stage after putting in a battling display at home to another Bundesliga giant, Bayern Munich, on Wednesday night.

da dobrowin: While the 2-1 scoreline at Parkhead in favour of the visitors has ensured the Hoops face an uphill task trying to progress heading into next week’s second leg, there remains room for optimism. This Bayern side is not one to fear.

Daizen Maeda

Yes, Vincent Kompany’s men are stacked with talent across the board, but the Old Firm outfit proved they can go toe to toe all over the pitch, with it taking a Michael Olise stunner and a clinical Harry Kane volley from a set-piece for the away side to power ahead.

Quite why Olise was allowed to cut inside onto his favoured left foot is a valid question. As too is why the “irrepressible” Kane – as hailed by journalist Alex Crook – was free at the back post.

Those may be the obvious negatives, yet with Daizen Maeda capping a strong finale by nodding Celtic back into the game – and the tie – Brendan Rodgers can certainly focus on the overwhelming positives ahead of next week’s trip to Bavaria.

Celtic's best performers vs Bayern

The obvious place to start would of course be with that man Maeda, with the Japanese sensation racking up his 22nd goal of the season – and his fourth in Europe – after turning home Yang Hyun-jun’s flick on to spark a frantic end to proceedings on the night.

While it had been a relatively quiet first hour or so on the left flank for the 27-year-old, he seemingly came alive after shifting into a more central role, having applied the pressure on both Eric Dier and Dayot Upamecano in his usual relentless manner.

Chalkboard

Elsewhere, despite conceding twice, the centre-back duo of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty can reflect on an encouraging outing on the big stage, with the pair – who both chalked up a 97% pass accuracy rate – looking relatively calm and composed, while shackling the aforementioned Kane for the large part of proceedings.

A word must also be said for another member of the backline, Alistair Johnston, with the Canadian hardly troubled down that right-hand side all night, having won ten of his 12 total duels, as well as providing an outlet in an attacking sense, after completing 100% of his attempted dribbles.

Ahead of the former Montreal man, it was also another quietly standout night for young Arne Engels, with the club-record signing proving that he’s at home against such a historic European outfit.

The Celtic star whose value is soaring

There’s a reason that Rodgers and Co forked out £11m to sign him over the summer. There’s a reason that at the age of just 21, he’s already chalked up four senior appearances for his country.

The Belgian is no doubt far from the “finished article” – as his manager stated earlier in the campaign – but he’s starting to flourish in the centre of the park, having looked remarkably comfortable up against Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka.

While he did lose possession on 23 occasions from his 60 touches, Engels was otherwise excellent on the night, racking up two key passes and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles, providing that real link between defence and attack. Indeed, it was the midfield man who teed up Nicolas Kuhn in the opening minute, while also picking out Reo Hatate with a driven pullback on the 50-minute mark.

Not only did the former FC Augsburg man regularly look to link up with Kuhn by bombing forward down the right channel, but he also put a shift in defensively, winning five out of six duels from his midfield berth.

It may still be early days – and no one will wish to see him depart – but young Engels looks like the type of talent who could one day be lining up in Europe’s top five leagues for a team like Bayern, with writer Ryan McGinlay even suggesting that the playmaker “belongs on this stage”.

Arne Engels

That bright future in the game can also be seen by the fact that his value continues to soar, with CIES Football Observatory noting that he could now be worth as much as €28m (£23m), ensuring he is worth at least double what the Hoops raked in with the sale of Kyogo Furuhashi.

Celtic’s 85-goal marksman moved on to Rennes for a £10m fee during the January window, with both parties taking the bold move to separate midway through the season.

At the age of 30, such a price tag appeared fair value for the Japanese ace. For Engels, however, the signs already point to Celtic raking in a far heftier sum, in a similar vain to the sales of Jota, Matt O’Riley and Kieran Tierney.

At some stage, it would be no surprise to see the one-time Club Brugge starlet pulling on a Bayern shirt. In the meantime, however, he could be crucial in trying to topple Kompany and Co next week.
