Rain-hit day memorable for Wagner, but not much else

Chris Rushworth completes five-wicket haul as 36 overs are added to 35 lost on day one

Neil Wagner, who struck a career-best 72 for Somerset against Warwickshire, will long-remember the second day of their weather-damaged LV=Insurance County Championship tussle at Edgbaston, but nobody else will.To the 35 overs lost on day one, another 36 were wiped out on day two which ended with Warwickshire on 112 for 3 in reply to the visitors’ 215.Somerset were lifted to 215 by a century stand for the ninth wicket between New Zealand all-rounder Wagner (72 from 78 balls) and Josh Davey (46, 80). It is still a modest total but represents a strong recovery from the wreckage of 37 for 6. Chris Rushworth took 5 for 47 – the 32nd haul of five or more wickets of his career.Warwickshire captain Will Rhodes (42, 90 balls) then kept his side’s reply from early ruin in this mid-table duel which may still yield a decisive result. Both sides have nothing to lose so might as well take a positive approach to the season’s dying embers. After Somerset resumed on the second morning on 180 for 8, Wagner and Davey continued to bat with few alarms. They took their alliance to 119 in 25 overs before being parted in controversial fashion.Wagner, having hit 11 fours and two sixes and just passed his previous career best (70), was aghast to be adjudged caught behind off Olly Hanon-Dalby, evidently thinking the ball had clipped either pad or stumps. His sense of injustice only heightened when the innings was wrapped up next ball as Davey skied Rushworth to long off.Warwickshire’s reply started badly when Kraigg Brathwaite’s run of ever-diminishing returns – 16, 9, 9, 8, 3, 0 – continued when his off-stump was plucked out by Lewis Gregory. Brathwaite fell in a brilliant first over by Gregory which could have brought a wicket every ball, but Rob Yates and Rhodes survived to add 53 in 16 overs before the former edged a Jack Brooks outswinger to wicketkeeper James Rew.The light, perpetually moderate, closed in even further after lunch and Rhodes and Alex Davies survived for an hour in low cloud with impending rain and floodlights on before the umpires took the players off.Rhodes lifted Davey to extra cover in one of the two slivers of play that followed before the light closed in for the final time. Only Wagner will recall this staccato day – unless the small crowd happened to include a connoisseur of watching covers being taken on and off – in which case, he or she had a treat because they were taken on and off with great speed and efficiency and considerable flair.

Mitchell Marsh has been named Australia’s T20 captain for the tour of South Africa, making him a frontrunner for the role on a permanent basis leading into next year’s World Cup.South Australia left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson has earned his first international call-up alongside allrounders Aaron Hardie and Matt Short for the three-match series which starts in late August and are Australia’s first T20 games since last year’s World Cup where the hosts went out in the group stage.Marsh takes the job vacated by Aaron Finch’s international retirement earlier this year although his appointment is currently just for the three matches in South Africa. The selectors will make a decision on the long-term captain after this year’s ODI World Cup, where Australia will be led by Pat Cummins, with a good chance they will unite the white-ball roles under one name, putting Marsh in a strong position to lead in both formats.”Mitch has long been a senior player within the white-ball structure, with this an opportunity for him to add to his leadership skills at international level,” national selector George Bailey said. “We look forward to him taking that step in South Africa.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Cameron Green and David Warner have been rested from the T20Is following the Ashes and will join for the ODIs. However, Steven Smith is included and Bailey confirmed he would open against South Africa following his stunning BBL performances for Sydney Sixers last season. Ashton Agar was ruled out of the T20Is as he continues to recover from a calf strain but will be available for the one-dayers.The trio of new faces in the T20I squad come on the back of impressive form in the BBL last season. Johnson had a breakout season for Brisbane Heat where he stood out operating at the death and then translated that form into the Sheffield Shield with South Australia.Hardie, who plays for Perth Scorchers, was the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 460 at a strike-rate of 141.10, while Short was only narrowly behind him with 458 striking at 144.47. Short earned an IPL deal with Punjab Kings on the back of his BBL season where he also claimed 11 wickets to be named the player of the season. Hardie has also been included the squad for the ODIs in South Africa and India.Left-armer Jason Behrendorff returns to the international fold and could play his first T20Is since the tour of West Indies in 2021.”Aaron, Spencer and Matt have been outstanding in the BBL and identified as potential national players of the future,” Bailey said. “This tour is a great opportunity for all three to demonstrate those skills in a national team environment.”Aaron has impressed in recent outings for Australia A as well as for the Scorchers while Matt has blossomed with extra responsibility at the top of the order for the Strikers.”Spencer’s left-arm pace and bounce was highly effective in his first season for the Heat. This trip will be a fantastic experience for all three and the chance to play their first games for their country.”From those who featured at last year’s T20 World Cup there is no place for Matthew Wade or Kane Richardson, but Bailey said he expected Wade to feature in the series against India which follows the ODI World Cup and the South Africa tour was seen as an opportunity to get some games into Josh Inglis.Australia T20 squad vs South Africa: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Sean Abbott, Jason Behrendorff, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Matt Short, Steven Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

Worth 2x more than Kyogo: Celtic star proved that he could play for Bayern

da premier bet: Thrashed 7-1 away to Borussia Dortmund not too long ago, Scottish champions Celtic showcased their notable improvement on the Champions League stage after putting in a battling display at home to another Bundesliga giant, Bayern Munich, on Wednesday night.

da dobrowin: While the 2-1 scoreline at Parkhead in favour of the visitors has ensured the Hoops face an uphill task trying to progress heading into next week’s second leg, there remains room for optimism. This Bayern side is not one to fear.

Daizen Maeda

Yes, Vincent Kompany’s men are stacked with talent across the board, but the Old Firm outfit proved they can go toe to toe all over the pitch, with it taking a Michael Olise stunner and a clinical Harry Kane volley from a set-piece for the away side to power ahead.

Quite why Olise was allowed to cut inside onto his favoured left foot is a valid question. As too is why the “irrepressible” Kane – as hailed by journalist Alex Crook – was free at the back post.

Those may be the obvious negatives, yet with Daizen Maeda capping a strong finale by nodding Celtic back into the game – and the tie – Brendan Rodgers can certainly focus on the overwhelming positives ahead of next week’s trip to Bavaria.

Celtic's best performers vs Bayern

The obvious place to start would of course be with that man Maeda, with the Japanese sensation racking up his 22nd goal of the season – and his fourth in Europe – after turning home Yang Hyun-jun’s flick on to spark a frantic end to proceedings on the night.

While it had been a relatively quiet first hour or so on the left flank for the 27-year-old, he seemingly came alive after shifting into a more central role, having applied the pressure on both Eric Dier and Dayot Upamecano in his usual relentless manner.

Chalkboard

Elsewhere, despite conceding twice, the centre-back duo of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Auston Trusty can reflect on an encouraging outing on the big stage, with the pair – who both chalked up a 97% pass accuracy rate – looking relatively calm and composed, while shackling the aforementioned Kane for the large part of proceedings.

A word must also be said for another member of the backline, Alistair Johnston, with the Canadian hardly troubled down that right-hand side all night, having won ten of his 12 total duels, as well as providing an outlet in an attacking sense, after completing 100% of his attempted dribbles.

Ahead of the former Montreal man, it was also another quietly standout night for young Arne Engels, with the club-record signing proving that he’s at home against such a historic European outfit.

The Celtic star whose value is soaring

There’s a reason that Rodgers and Co forked out £11m to sign him over the summer. There’s a reason that at the age of just 21, he’s already chalked up four senior appearances for his country.

The Belgian is no doubt far from the “finished article” – as his manager stated earlier in the campaign – but he’s starting to flourish in the centre of the park, having looked remarkably comfortable up against Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka.

While he did lose possession on 23 occasions from his 60 touches, Engels was otherwise excellent on the night, racking up two key passes and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles, providing that real link between defence and attack. Indeed, it was the midfield man who teed up Nicolas Kuhn in the opening minute, while also picking out Reo Hatate with a driven pullback on the 50-minute mark.

Not only did the former FC Augsburg man regularly look to link up with Kuhn by bombing forward down the right channel, but he also put a shift in defensively, winning five out of six duels from his midfield berth.

It may still be early days – and no one will wish to see him depart – but young Engels looks like the type of talent who could one day be lining up in Europe’s top five leagues for a team like Bayern, with writer Ryan McGinlay even suggesting that the playmaker “belongs on this stage”.

Arne Engels

That bright future in the game can also be seen by the fact that his value continues to soar, with CIES Football Observatory noting that he could now be worth as much as €28m (£23m), ensuring he is worth at least double what the Hoops raked in with the sale of Kyogo Furuhashi.

Celtic’s 85-goal marksman moved on to Rennes for a £10m fee during the January window, with both parties taking the bold move to separate midway through the season.

At the age of 30, such a price tag appeared fair value for the Japanese ace. For Engels, however, the signs already point to Celtic raking in a far heftier sum, in a similar vain to the sales of Jota, Matt O’Riley and Kieran Tierney.

At some stage, it would be no surprise to see the one-time Club Brugge starlet pulling on a Bayern shirt. In the meantime, however, he could be crucial in trying to topple Kompany and Co next week.

Simon Harmer's latest ten-for breaks Warwickshire resistance en route to nine-wicket win

Khushi’s hard-hitting 40 makes light work of small target in fourth innings

ECB Reporters Network27-Jun-2023

Simon Harmer’s ten-wicket haul ensured Essex rise into second place on the table•Getty Images

Simon Harmer claimed the 14th ten-wicket match haul of his career as he helped Essex to a nine-wicket victory that catapulted them into second place in the Division One table. The South African off-spinner had played a key part in dismissing Warwickshire for 158 in the first innings with his 32nd five-wicket haul for the county, and he added No.33 second time around. He bowled unchanged from the River End throughout the 94 overs of Warwickshire’s second innings for match figures of 10 for 230. He now has 36 wickets this season. However, it was not all plain sailing for Harmer and his team-mates. That Essex did not have the win wrapped up much earlier was down to two lower-order half-century stands, both involving Yorkshire loanee Dom Bess (63).He shared 82 runs from 75 balls with Dan Mousley (61) for the seventh wicket, and 64 runs for the ninth with Jake Lintott, whose T20-esque hitting garnered him a career-best 78.The three of them helped take Warwickshire past and then beyond the total needed to make Essex bat for a second time. The Bears were eventually all out for 381, leaving Essex requiring 83 from a minimum of 122 overs. In the end they needed just 15 of them as Sir Alastair Cook (23 not out) and Tom Westley (12 not out) saw them over the line under leaden Chelmsford skies, reaching the target with four byes. However, en route they lost the aggressive Feroze Khushi who hit two sixes and five fours in a 46-ball 40 before chipping up to bat-pad off the ubiquitous Bess. The back-to-back home wins provided ample amends for Essex’s only defeat in the LV= Insurance County Championship this season in the corresponding fixture at Edgbaston last month. With 299 the target to make Essex bat again, Rob Yates and Will Rhodes, the not-out overnight pair, looked as if they were going to dig in until Christmas. They knocked off 31 in the first 55 minutes of the third day. However, the early tension in the home camp was eased when Jamie Porter brought one in from outside off-stump to Rhodes and Will Buttleman took the catch down legside. Rhodes batted for 118 balls for his 46.Five overs later, Yates became Harmer’s 400th first-class wicket for Essex when the left-hander leaned forward tentatively and fell to another catch behind.Warwickshire sent in Ed Barnard to break up the left-handed sequence at the top of the order. He did not last long, dollying a leading edge off Doug Bracewell to mid-off.Jacob Bethell had looked composed, driving the majority of his seven fours through the covers, but he departed to a bat-pad catch off Matt Critchley for 36. Three balls on, the leg-spinner who has gained a reputation this season as a ‘golden arm’, also accounted for Michael Burgess, caught by a diving Cook at slip. The 21-year-old Mousley reached his fourth Championship fifty of the season during a Harmer over from which he plundered 18 runs. However, as so often, Harmer had his revenge when Mousley charged down the wicket in an attempt to land a fourth maximum and was stumped by several country miles. His disgust with himself was plain to see.Hassan Ali cracked Critchley for a six but his was a short stay as he picked out Khushi at deep midwicket to give Harmer his fourth wicket of the innings.Eight-down, Warwickshire were then still 30 runs away from returning Essex to the crease, but Bess reached a well-deserved fifty just before that breakthrough point was reached in the 83rd over. He departed in an eventful over from Porter in which he hooked a six, was dealt a painful blow in the solar plexus and nicked behind.Lintott’s maiden first-class fifty came at a run-a-ball and had Essex struggling to defend the boundary, His free-wheeling innings of 14 fours and two sixes was ended when Khushi held on in the deep to provide Harmer with another match-ball for his burgeoning collection.

Nancy will love him: Celtic may have another Callum McGregor in the making

da betsul: If this is to be the end of Martin O’Neill’s brief return, what a way to sign off.

da winzada777: On Thursday night, Celtic ended a 16-match, four-year-long winless streak in European away games by beating Feyenoord 3-1 at De Kuip, coming back from a goal down to do so; Yang Hyun-jun, Reo Hatate and Benjamin Nygren all on target.

This means O’Neill has won five of six matches since being parachuted into the role following Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation.

The 73-year-old, alongside Shaun Maloney, is set to remain in charge when the Celts visit Easter Road to take on Hibernian on Sunday lunchtime, but there is optimism that Wilfried Nancy will take over soon, potentially in time for the visit of Dundee on Wednesday.

Once the Frenchman does swap Ohio for Glasgow, one of Celtic’s breakout stars from this season could well become a key figure, currently on course to replicate an active club legend.

Callum McGregor's importance at Celtic

While players, managers and board members come and go, Callum McGregor remains a constant, the heartbeat in both the team and the club as a whole.

Thursday saw the captain make his 540th appearance for the club, starting 21 of 22 matches so far this season, accumulating 1,939 minutes out of a possible 2,040 so far (95%).

When Scott Brown departed in 2021, his leadership and all-around brilliance was supposed to be impossible to replace, but McGregor has transitioned into this role seamlessly, lifting 24 major trophies to date, and it is incomprehensible to imagine a Celtic side without him.

As well as winning back the ball and keeping the team ticking in possession, McGregor continues to produce key moments, lashing home a 95th-minute winner at St Mirren last Saturday night, having scored a similar rocket against Rangers in the League Cup semi-finals earlier this month.

Having joined the club as an eight-year-old, McGregor continues to set an example to all those in the Celtic academy dreaming of representing the first team one day, but who is currently on course to follow in his footsteps?

Celtic's next academy star

Celtic have endured rotten luck in terms of injuries this season.

Cameron Carter-Vickers could be out for the rest of the season following achilles surgery, Jota remains sidelined after rupturing his ACL in April, while Alistair Johnston suffered a torn hamstring against Kairat in August, only to aggravate the issue 26 minutes into his return when Sturm Graz visited Parkhead.

With Johnston, who has been so excellent since joining the club, having started only five matches all season, most would have expected Anthony Ralston to deputise, but it appears as though Colby Donovan has leapfrogged him in the pecking order.

After featuring sporadically during pre-season, scoring against Cork City at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in July, the 19-year-old made his competitive senior debut against Livingston when Rodgers made wholesale changes in between the two legs against Kairat.

Well, since then, he hasn’t really looked back, starting just two Premiership matches, but included in the lineup for four of the five Europa League fixtures, these against Crvena zvezda, Braga, Sturm Graz and now Feyenoord, putting in an excellent display in Rotterdam.

The table below documents how well he has played in Europe so far.

As the table documents, Donovan has been excellent in the Europa League this season, contributing in a wide variety of ways.

The teenager ranks highly for all the in possession metrics, recording an assist for Liam Scales’ crucial equaliser against Sturm Graz, while only Arne Engels and Benjamin Nygren have created more big chances, ranked first in terms of goal-creating actions.

Given that incoming manager Nancy deploys a 3-4-2-1 formation, his Columbus Crew side featuring flying wing-backs Max Arfsten and Andrés Herrera, his imminent arrival could be great news for the youngster.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Braga, then-manager Rodgers praised Donovan’s “outstanding” performances, labelling him a “real bright spark” as well as heralding his “personality” and “mentality”.

Well, these all feel like compliments that could be thrown the way of a certain McGregor, whose leadership is as invaluable as his quality to this team.

Thus, it is certainly still early days, but all the signs suggest that Celtic supporters are rightly excited about Donovan, who will go on to have quite the career should he manage to match McGregor’s achievements and make 500+ appearances for the club.

Hurricanes seal home final with last-ball win; Heat and Australia sweat on Kuhnemann injury

The result also keeps Strikers, Scorchers, and Renegades’ hopes alive

Tristan Lavalette16-Jan-2025

Caleb Jewell made 76 off 49 balls•Getty Images

Matthew Wade hit a six off the final ball as Hobart Hurricanes unleashed their considerable firepower in a superb chase of 202 to defeat Brisbane Heat in a pivotal result that kept alive the BBL finals hopes of three teams.Openers Caleb Jewell and Mitchell Owen got Hurricanes off to a rampant start on a batting-friendly Gabba surface. After a late wobble, Hurricanes needed 11 runs off the final over and then whittled it down to requiring one off the final ball. Wade finished as the hero with a six off Xavier Bartlett that sailed over deep square leg.It was Hurricanes’ seventh straight win and sealed a home final. It was a disappointment for Heat, who had posted a big score on the back of Marnus Labuschagne hitting 77 off 44 in his BBL return.Their defeat was further soured by left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann injuring his right thumb late in the contest in a development that could have ramifications for Australia’s upcoming Test squad to Sri Lanka. The result kept alive the slim finals prospects of Adelaide Strikers, Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades, who would have all been eliminated if Heat had won.Owen ignites early, Wade the late heroThe elevation of Owen from the middle-lower order to opener has proven a masterstroke for Hurricanes this season. The powerfully-built Owen has had the licence to attack in the powerplay and once again he got Hurricanes off to a flier. He whacked three sixes in his favoured leg-side region as Hurricanes motored to 47 for 0 after four overs. Owen was running hot and, bizarrely, a fire started in the DJ booth in the terraces. There was a brief delay as nearby fans had to be evacuated, but Owen did not lose his rhythm on resumption. He whacked legspinner Mitchell Swepson for a trio of blows into the crowd in the sixth over before holing out for 44 off 20 balls. After Charlie Wakim was stumped for a duck in a tight call, Jewell and Nikhil Chaudhary combined for an 81-run partnership to get Hurricanes back on track. Jewell batted beautifully with several gorgeous strokes through the covers as Hurricanes gained the ascendency by the time they took the Power Surge in the 16th over. But the match turned with Chaudhary and Jewell dismissed in the Surge and it came down to a nerve-jangling final over.Wade and Jake Doran had to combat slower deliveries from Bartlett before Wade swept a faster paced ball into the crowd to seal a stunning result that had wider ramifications.Heat’s mixed fielding effort, Kuhnemann injury scare Heat were outstanding with the ball and in the field during their championship run last year. But they’ve been ragged as this season has worn on and were left to rue several dropped catches.Nathan McSweeney was the main offender with three dropped catches, including Owen and Jewell early in their innings. In his defence they were tough chances, and he did almost make up for it with brilliant efforts to dismiss Jewell and Chaudhary. Swepson also clung on to a blinder to dismiss Tim David, but it wasn’t enough. There will be a nervous wait over the fitness of Kuhnemann, who ran off the field with one ball left in his final over after being hit on his right thumb by a firm drive from Wade.Newbie Bean strikes in professional debutIn a blow for Hurricanes, quick Billy Stanlake was ruled out for the remainder of the season after he suffered a shoulder injury in the outfield against Renegades.Left-arm quick Marcus Bean had the big shoes of Stanlake to fill. It loomed as a tough initiation for the native Queenslander in his first professional match after being plucked out of club cricket in Tasmania.Skipper Nathan Ellis handed the 21-year-old beanpole, pardon the pun, the new ball, but he made a nervous start after bowling a wide. He sprayed his next delivery but McSweeney could only toe the ball straight to cover in an ugly dismissal.Bean, sporting a wispy moustache and bleached blonde hair, was naturally ecstatic as he pumped his fist and let out a scream in understandable jubilation. Bowling sharply around 135 kph, he bowled a cracking back-of-a-length delivery that beat Labuschagne.By the end of his debut, Bean bowled in four different phases and equipped himself well to finish with 1 for 32 from 4 overs.Labuschagne shines in sole BBL appearanceThere was a lot of expectation over the returns of Labuschagne and skipper Usman Khawaja, who were both playing their sole BBL matches of the season.Khawaja tried to make up for lost time with a first ball boundary. He then showcased the type of inventive batting more befitting of his new Test opening partner Sam Konstas with a scooped six off Ellis followed by lapping a full toss to the boundary.Khawaja raced to 23 off 8 balls before being deceived by a superb slower delivery by Ellis. In came Matthew Renshaw, who overshadowed Labuschagne with a rapid 40 to dominate the 69-run partnership.Renshaw’s improved power-hitting was again on show as Heat rattled along at a run rate of 10 per over. But he was left frustrated after being run out at the keeper’s end attempting a second run.Heat went through a lull in the middle overs until taking the Power Surge and blasting 33 runs across the 15th and 16th overs. Labuschagne took over as he mixed traditional strokes with inventiveness to slam quick Riley Meredith around the ground.Labuschagne has a modest BBL record, but clearly relished – much like Steven Smith – the freedom of T20 cricket after a gruelling Test summer. He notched his second BBL half-century off 31 balls and combined with Tom Alsop in an innings-turning 85-run partnership.Labuschagne reached a new BBL personal best score before being dismissed off the last ball of the innings.
