Priyank Panchal, Shreyas Iyer and Sarfaraz Khan have been drafted into the Ajinkya Rahane-led West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone in Coimbatore starting Wednesday.Panchal and Sarfaraz are joining the camp from Bengaluru, where they were part of the India A squad that beat New Zealand A 1-0 in a series of three unofficial Tests. Their addition comes on the back of Prithvi Shaw and Rahul Tripathi being called up to join the A team for the white-ball leg of the same tour in Chennai starting Thursday.Iyer, meanwhile, is returning from a short break. He missed the semi-final against Central Zone as he was at the National Cricket Academy for a regular fitness assessment, prior to being named as one of the stand-by players in India’s T20 World Cup squad. He also missed the quarter-final against Northeast as he was with India’s Asia Cup contingent in UAE, also as a reserve player.Panchal, India A’s red-ball captain, finished the series with two half-centuries and 201 runs overall in four innings. Sarfaraz, the 2021-22 Ranji season’s highest run-getter, had a slightly milder series, returning 99 runs in three innings.Meanwhile, the upcoming red-ball season could be crucial for Iyer, as he looks to turnaround his career that appears to have hit a rough patch. While he remains an incumbent in the Test team, his apparent struggles with the short ball have come under increased scrutiny. He has also, over the past three months, fallen behind in the pecking order as far as India’s first XI goes in white-ball cricket.Iyer’s most-recent appearance for India was in the Caribbean in July-August, where he hit three half-centuries in as many ODIs, and one half-century in three T20I knocks. After the Duleep final, he is likely to link up with India’s World Cup bound squad. Unlike at the Asia Cup, where only one of the three reserves were on tour, all reserve players will be part of the Australia-bound contingent.
da fazobetai: The importance of full-backs in Enzo Maresca’s system at Chelsea is key, often having to change their role based on the opposition and tactical game plan.
da leao: This has become very apparent at Stamford Bridge where Malo Gusto has seen himself popping up in all kinds of positions, overlapping to provide width, inverting into the pivot, and even finishing himself in the pockets as a number 10.
Malo Gusto in action for Chelsea
However, as good as Marc Cucurella has been – notably silencing Bukayo Saka in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal – if Maresca wants to deploy his left full-back in this role, he doesn’t get the same technical quality and creativity as he gets from Gusto on the right side, and that’s why the Blues are currently looking at a creative option for that role.
Chelsea looking at signing Premier League star
According to reports from CaughtOffside, Wolves defender, Rayan Ait-Nouri, is on the radar of Chelsea as a left-back option. Liverpool and Manchester United are also reported to be interested in the 23-year-old, which could see a bidding war for the highly rated defender who is allegedly valued at around £58m.
The Algerian has gone from strength to strength since joining Wolves from Angers back in 2021 for a fee of around £10m. Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has described Ait-Nouri as “incredible”, praising his versatility and work rate.
Wolves player Rayan Ait-Nouri
The flying wing-back has made 13 appearances so far this season, scoring three goals, providing two assists, and totalling 1,079 minutes played.
The 23-year-old could add extra creativity from the left-hand side, as he has shown this season already with his 5 goals and assists, and creative metrics that even rank ahead of Chelsea’s Noni Madueke.

Ait-Nouri vs Madueke comparison
Madueke has had a brilliant start to the new campaign under Maresca, making 14 appearances in all competitions, and scoring five goals in 975 minutes. However, he is yet to register an assist, becoming much more of a direct goal threat this season, rather than a provider.
On the other hand, Ait-Nouri has been playing in his dynamic left-back role, inverting into midfield at times, finding himself in the number 10 position, providing width almost as a left-winger at times, getting himself two Premier League assists already this season, better than Madueke in this regard.

When you compare the creativity numbers of Ait-Nouri against Madueke, who is a natural winger, and Cucurella, who has played a host of different roles already, you can see the Wolves defender provides more quality going forward than the Spaniard.
Ait-Nouri ranks closely to Madueke in progressive passes per 90, key passes per 90, and shot-creating actions per 90, whilst having better assists per 90 metrics than the England winger.
Cucurella, on the other hand, offers much less in the way of progressive qualities and creativity but instead adds defensive intensity and leadership at the back.
Ait-Nouri
By adding the Wolves star to the squad, Maresca would have real flexibility in his decision-making, using Cucurella for certain game types, and the 23-year-old Algerian for others.
This would be yet another string to the Italian’s tactical bow, and something that could make the Blues that little bit more unpredictable.

Arsenal given selection headaches ahead of crucial Liverpool game
da dobrowin: While sporting director Edu Gaspar weighs up the club’s next transfer swoops, in a bid to reinforce Mikel Arteta’s squad, the Spaniard is currently attempting to find a way around some real selection headaches before hosting Liverpool on Sunday.
Arteta thinks "exceptional" Real Madrid player would be perfect for Arsenal
The north Londoners could look to raid the Bernabeu.
ByEmilio Galantini Oct 23, 2024
There are fears that defender Riccardo Calafiori has suffered ligament damage, after he was forced off with 20 minutes left to play during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League earlier this week.
Meanwhile, it is believed Takehiro Tomiyasu is facing around a month on the sidelines after his knee injury flared up again recently. The Japan international had only just returned from a problem which kept him sidelined since pre-season, making a brief cameo against Southampton, but Tomiyasu is now set to be unavailable again for the foreseeable.
Arsenal expect Bukayo Saka to miss their clash against Liverpool, while it remains to be seen when club captain Martin Odegaard will return from his ankle injury. Another doubt ahead of this Sunday is defender Jurrien Timber, with the Dutchman missing Arsenal’s last few games after picking up a muscle problem recently.
Meanwhile, left-back Kieran Tierney remains out with a hamstring injury. Arteta has been dealt many fitness blows to key player since the beginning of the season, and Arsenal have done pretty well to cope with what can only be described as an injury crisis.
Reports have suggested that the north Londoners could look to the transfer market in an effort to sign much-needed strength in depth. Arsenal are reportedly looking to sign a back-up for Saka, with Bryan Mbeumo among their potential targets.
It is even believed by some sections of the press that Arsenal may lodge a bid for Atalanta defender Isak Hien, so there are a few options that Edu and co are considering as we approach the turn of the year.
Real Madrid forward Arda Guler is deemed by Arteta as a potential perfect Arsenal signing, according to some reports, as the Turkey international starlet weighs up his future at the Bernabeu.
Guler is by no means the only Real player on their radar, though, as an update from Spain claims this week.

The £200,000-per-week star could be close to saying goodbye to Madrid, and his next destination may well be the Premier League. It is believed Carlo Ancelotti’s side are “seriously” considering his sale in January, with Arsenal prepared to bid for Rodrygo and take advantage of this situation.
Both the Gunners and Liverpool are described as at the “forefront” of the race for Rodrygo, but it may not be an easy deal to pull off. There have been suggestions that the 23-year-old could cost around £136 million, which would shatter Arsenal’s transfer record, so it remains to be seen just how far Edu and co would be willing to go for a deal.

Worcestershire overwhelmed Leicestershire by an innings and 259 runs with more than a day to spare in the LV=Insurance County Championship match at New Road. The home side collected a maximum haul of 24 points to secure their second Championship victory of the campaign. They established a first innings lead of 429 after plundering 120 from 20 overs before Saturday morning’s declaration half an hour before lunch on 577 for 6 – their highest ever total against Leicestershire. Then some fiery bowling from Dillon Pennington, a career Championship best return of 4 for 35 from loanee Matthew Waite and a series of superb catches saw Leicestershire crumble for a second time.”It hurts and this is the lowest point of my head coach role,” Paul Nixon said. “That wasn’t a first-class performance. We have to do some soul searching. We have to reflect and we have to be honest. Our discipline with bat and ball wasn’t good enough.”Worcestershire dominated in all departments with Azhar Ali’s double century the bedrock of their innings and taking the Pakistan batter’s run tally to 465 in the last four innings.Related
Barker's half-dozen leads Hampshire to victory as Somerset fold
They looked a side capable of mounting a promotion challenge although they will undoubtedly encounter stiffer opposition than that on offer from Leicestershire. The visitors never recovered from opting to bat on a helpful pitch after winning the toss and being bowled out for 148. They remain anchored to the foot of the table without a win heading into the break from four-day cricket and the launch of the Vitality Blast campaign.Worcestershire resumed on 456 for 3 and club captain Brett D’Oliveira added only two to his overnight 52 before he became Wiaan Mulder’s fourth scalp of the innings but Azhar, who resumed on 202, set the tone with a succession of boundaries. He eventually played on to Chris Wright to end his marathon nine-and-a-quarter-hour knock on 225 and left the arena to a standing ovation and the congratulations of several Leicestershire players. An innings full of class spanning three days and 350 balls included one six and 22 fours and was Worcestershire’s highest individual score since Moeen Ali’s 250 versus Glamorgan at New Road nine years ago.Ed Barnard made a breezy 26 as Worcestershire topped the 500 mark for the first time in nine years before the allrounder hooked Wright down long leg’s throat but the significant acceleration was provided by Ben Cox.He cleared the long Cathedral side boundary for the first of his three sixes and two more maximums off new Leicestershire red-ball captain, Callum Parkinson, hurried him to a 42-ball half century. Worcestershire surpassed their 121-year-old record score against Leicestershire of 561 before the declaration.Leicestershire needed a solid start but Rishi Patel managed only a single before he was plumb lbw to Pennington.Hassan Azad had denied Worcestershire victory in the opening day of the season at the Uptonsteel County Ground with an undefeated century so Worcestershire’s joy was understandable when the opener on 18 was brilliantly caught and bowled by Charlie Morris, who was slightly wrongfooted but adjusted to hold onto the low chance one-handed away to his left. There was no respite for Leicestershire and Colin Ackermann, deposed as captain this week, tried to work Pennington to leg and was lbw.
Pennington bowled with considerable pace but it needed a superb catch by keeper Ben Cox to provide him with his third wicket. Lewis Hill had just completed a 64-ball half-century when he tried to pull the pace bowler and top edged the ball towards fine leg but Cox running back at full tilt managed to hold onto a diving catch at full stretch.Waite, on loan from Yorkshire after Joe Leach’s injury, came into the attack and Mulder was bowled after offering no stroke. He then clung onto a return catch the equal of that by Morris away to his right to account for Harry Swindells on the brink of tea.The end came swiftly for Leicestershire with Ben Mike, Ed Barnes and Rehan Ahmed all caught behind by Cox, the first two off Waite and the last of them from the bowling of Morris.
da dobrowin: Wolverhampton Wanderers finally picked up their first win of the Premier League season just before the international break, as Gary O’Neil’s Old Gold downed fellow relegation-threatened side Southampton 2-0.
da imperador bet: This could well be the springboard needed to pick up even more victories, with the West Midlands outfit unbeaten in their last three now in the top-flight, having picked up back-to-back draws before this desperately needed win.
However, despite that rare three points finally being picked up to the delight of the Molineux masses, there’s plenty of talk that O’Neil’s future at the club is still on unsteady foundations.
Managers who could soon replace O'Neil
Before this pivotal win, it was understandable that O’Neil was under some pressure in the Wolves dug-out, with his side conceding goals by the bucket load with no golden victory in sight.
Around that time, the rumour mill was going into overdrive as to who the ex-AFC Bournemouth manager’s successor was going to be, with the likes of David Moyes and Graham Potter thrown into the mix as bosses who have considerable Premier League experience.
West Ham United manager David Moyes
All of that talk has died down now somewhat, with O’Neil hopeful that he has bought himself some extended time in the Old Gold job post with some green shoots now visible.
But, fresh rumours seem to indicate Wolves are now looking at this brand-new alternative to the likes of Moyes and Potter, who could be a real statement appointment by the powers that be at Molineux in moving on from O’Neil’s up-and-down tenure.
This manager in the dug-out could also get even more out of Matheus Cunha, who has been a bright spark all campaign long even as his side occupy a spot in the Premier League drop-zone.
The bold manager who could soon replace O'Neil
The new name emerging into the limelight to be the under-fire Wolves manager’s successor is Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who is on the hunt for an exciting new opportunity after walking away from Manchester United recently after Ruben Amorim’s grand arrival.
Van Nistelrooy had been on the Coventry City list as a potential replacement for Mark Robins, but Football Insider has revealed that the Dutchman wants to remain in the Premier League as he attempts to embark on his first main manager gig in England, with Wolves, Southampton and Crystal Palace all reportedly eyeing him up.
Van Nistelrooy would prove to be a hit as interim Red Devils boss after the wheels had finally come off the dire Erik ten Hag era, steering Man United to three wins from four, with Bruno Fernandes in particular loving life under his temporary guidance.
Fernandes would pick up four goals and two assists under the ex-PSV Eindhoven manager’s impactful stint at the Theatre of Dreams, with this not being the only set-up Van Nistelrooy has been responsible for that has seen an attacking midfielder shine, as his PSV team also heavily relied on a player in this spot during the 2022/23 season.

Looking at the table above, Van Nistelrooy – who typically utilises a 4-3-3 system – clearly gets more out of attacking midfielders when given full freedom to leave his imprint, with Xavi Simons lighting up the Eredivisie under his stewardship with 19 goals bagged in just 34 games.
Matheus Cunha is no doubt keeping tabs on the manager situation at Molineux, perhaps hopeful that a fresh boss will come in soon like the Man United icon, considering he also can explode into life from this position.
Matheus Cunha
Last match, Cunha scored and assisted in his team’s 2-0 win over Southampton from this spot on the pitch, with his total numbers for Wolves here reaching seven goals and four assists from just ten games.
Manager Focus
Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.
Therefore, if the Old Gold hierarchy do decide a change is necessary, Van Nistelrooy could be high up on their names of replacements, with Ten Hag previously praising his assistant for having “so much experience”, despite his relative youth in the coaching game.
Such an appointment could then see Cunha’s game perhaps taken to another level, to truly fashion him into something of an attacking monster at Molineux.

Manchester Originals crash out after failing to complete tall chase inside 72 balls

Oval Invincibles qualified for the Women’s Hundred final in style, racking up the highest score of this year’s competition as they brushed Manchester Originals aside by 32 runs at Emirates Old Trafford.Invincibles’ score of 163 for 2 was powered by an unbeaten 79 from captain Suzie Bates, and they can now look forward to the showcase match at Lord’s on Saturday against either the Southern Brave or Trent Rockets. In reply, Originals never got close, with the defeat ending their slim chance of qualification for the latter stages of the competition, despite 64 from Lizelle Lee in what could be her last match for the team.Seventeen-year-old Sophia Smale and Marizanne Kapp, who enjoyed a good day with bat and ball, were the pick of the bowlers, both finishing with two wickets as the Originals were restricted to 131 for 6 in a dominant display for the London-based side.Sophia Smale’s two early wickets extended Oval Invincible’s advantage•ECB/Getty Images
Knowing that a victory would guarantee them top spot and an automatic berth to the final, the Invincibles won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision justified by the fluent start provided by the experienced opening pairing of Bates and Lauren Winfield-Hill.The pair had raced to 62 in just 43 balls when Winfield-Hill was caught by Erin Burns in the deep of Emma Lamb for 25 but New Zealander Bates was undeterred, bringing up an impressive fifty off 33 balls, before Alice Capsey was bowled by Sophie Ecclestone for 18 trying to keep the runs flowing. That brought Kapp to the crease, returning to the team after missing the last two outings, and she and Bates played powerfully around the ground to elevate their team to an impressive 163 with an unbroken partnership of 67 from just 36 balls.Bates’ innings of 79 featured nine fours and two sixes, while Kapp’s 36 contained five boundaries, including one maximum. That total was just short of the overall record team total for the Women’s Hundred – 166 set by Southern Brave last year – but Invincibles will take satisfaction from knowing that their victory, coupled with the Brave’s shock defeat to Northern Superchargers earlier in the day means they will avoid having to play in Friday night’s Eliminator at Brave’s expense.Related

Originals had an academic target to chase the runs down in 72 balls for a spot in the play-offs, which seemed unlikely when Emma Lamb was bowled by Smale without scoring. Bates and Kapp then combined again, as Amy Satterthwaite was caught by the former off the latter’s bowling for just two.Lee’s lone hand was set against the wickets that tumbled around her. Burns was bowled by Smale for five, Sophie Ecclestone was caught by Capsey off Kapp for one, and Daisy Mullan was run out for nine on her Hundred debut.Lee reached her fifty off 34 balls before finally perishing for 64 off 41, caught on the boundary off Eva Gray, to a warm ovation from the appreciative home crowd.Ami Campbell restored some pride in Originals’ performance, striking a couple of boundaries in a run-a-ball 23, but it wasn’t enough to save her side from elimination.

The duo of Bates and Devine set the foundation for the win with a 99-run opening stand for New Zealand, who handed international caps to Izzy Gaze and Eden Carson, plus a T20I debut to Fran Jonas. Devine fell two runs shy of her half-century, but then got among the wickets, including her 100th in T20Is, becoming the first woman and second overall – Shakib Al Hasan is the other – with 100 wickets and 2000 runs in the format.A fighting 39 off just 17 balls from Chloe Tryon failed to get South Africa over the line despite fleeting hopes of a tight finish as their stuttering start and a steady stream of wickets proved costly.Devine intervention It was Devine who made the early running at Edgbaston, racing to 35 off 20 balls as New Zealand ended the powerplay on 49 without loss after being asked to bat. She unleashed a stunning slog sweep behind square off Nonkululeko Mlaba for six and almost fell next ball attempting the same, but keeper Sinalo Jafta couldn’t gather a tough bottom edge.Devine took 14 off the next over, striking Ayabonga Khaka for two fours, before depositing a waist-high full-toss over the square-leg boundary. She eventually holed out to Tryon at long-on from the bowling of Mlaba, having faced 40 balls in which she hit four fours and two sixes.Sophie Devine became the first woman – and second overall – to record the double of 100 wickets and 2000 runs in T20Is•Associated Press
Bates plays a gem Women’s cricket is making its debut at a multi-sport event, but Bates has been here before, so to speak, having represented New Zealand in basketball at the 2008 Olympics. When on 22, she hit Delmi Tucker straight to midwicket, where Khaka managed only to parry the ball overhead. Then there was a chance to run Bates out after she and Amelia Kerr both turned back, but Mignon du Preez pulled out of her throw, possibly concerned that Shabnim Ismail was in the way or that there was a lack of back-up despite Tryon being behind the stumps, albeit standing a fair way back.Bates had started slowly, but she picked up speed as she went along, and brought up fifty pushing Anneke Bosch to deep midwicket and running two. It was her 22nd half-century in T20Is but first since February 2019, during India’s tour of New Zealand. She smashed a thunderous cover drive off Ismail for four to move to 67 and, three balls later, scooped her for six. In the final over, Bates sent a Khaka full-toss over the fence at deep square-leg, and then heaved a four through mid-on, and swung the penultimate delivery over fine leg for another six – her third of the innings. A total of 18 runs came off the final over, but Kerr was run-out on the last ball. By then, Bates had achieved her highest score in T20Is since her unbeaten 124 against South Africa in the 2018 tri-nation series in England.Chloe Tryon scored a dashing 17-ball 39•Associated Press
South Africa’s woes continue South Africa endured a rocky lead-up to this tournament, with a multi-format series in England in which they were swept in both the ODI and T20I legs 3-0.After Hayley Jensen had Bosch caught at cover by Bates in the second over, and Tazmin Brits hit Hannah Rowe straight to Brooke Halliday at midwicket, South Africa were 15 for 2 after four overs.Du Preez was yet to score when she was put down at backward point by Carson off Lea Tahuhu, but her attempted sweep off Kerr sailed to Jonas at backward square and she was out for 26. Laura Wolvaardt made 28 off 30 balls before she fell, caught by Bates, running around to mid-on, off the bowling of Devine. It wasn’t all doom and gloom for South Africa, as they cashed in on some short bowling. Wolvaardt and, in particular, Tryon, made merry. Tryon smashed three sixes and three fours during her innings, helping herself to 17 runs off one Tahuhu over, which went for 21 in all. Largely through her efforts, South Africa were two runs ahead of New Zealand after 15 overs. But when Sune Luus flicked Jensen off her pads towards short cover and then sent Tryon back, Jensen gathered on her follow-through and threw down the stumps at the non-strikers’ end with Tryon short of her ground. That left South Africa needing 52 runs off 27 balls.Devine had Tucker caught by Carson at third for her 100th T20I wicket, and then had Luus caught by Halliday, to claim her third for the match. And, from there, the task proved too much for South Africa.

da luck: Agreeing a new contract with talisman Mohamed Salah is excellent news for the Reds, but it doesn’t appear to be stopping the soon-to-be Premier League champions from looking at players who they believe will improve their attack for next season.

The Reds are putting their contract mess behind them.
ByTom Cunningham Apr 17, 2025
Given how Diogo Jota, Darwin Núñez, and at times Luis Diaz have struggled for consistency this season, Arne Slot looks to be in the market for new arrivals that can take the pressure off Salah.
It’s been reported that Liverpool are ready to make a £130 million offer to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United. The Sweden international is considered to be a priority for the Reds, and they hope this mouth-watering offer is enough to persuade Newcastle to agree a transfer.
It’s not just Isak that the Reds are looking at, as according to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool are also lining up a move to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The forward is now expected to leave the Bees this summer, and a bid of around £50 million would be enough to secure a transfer.
Liverpool preparing offer to sign Aston Villa star Rogers
The list of attacking options doesn’t stop there, as according to Empire of the Kop, Liverpool have placed Morgan Rogers at the top of their transfer list and are preparing an offer to sign him from Aston Villa.
The report states that his performances for Villa throughout this season have placed him on Liverpool’s radar, and the Reds are now planning a ‘serious’ move to bring him to Anfield. But they are not alone in this race, as the report does add that Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and both Manchester clubs are also interested in the attacking midfielder.
In fact, Man United have already made a bid for Rogers worth £70 million, but it isn’t clear if he would be interested in a move to Old Trafford. Liverpool club chiefs have been left impressed by Rogers’ pace, dribbling and his ability to create clear-cut chances.
Rogers, who has been dubbed “superb” by scout/writer Jacek Kulig, has scored eight goals and recorded eight assists in 31 league games this season, making him one of Villa’s key attacking players.

A factor that Liverpool fans will hope works to their advantage is that Rogers is sponsored by Adidas, and the Reds have recently secured a £60 million deal per season with Adidas to be their new kit sponsor, perhaps increasing the motivation for FSG to complete a deal for a player who will see them thrive both on the pitch and off it.

Man Utd transfer news
da gbg bet: It would be an understatement to suggest that Amorim has a hefty task on his hands at Old Trafford. Several managers have tried and all have failed to awaken a sleeping giant, from Jose Mourinho all the way to Erik ten Hag. This time, as the first coach to arrive with a new sporting director in place in the form of Dan Ashworth, the Red Devils will be desperate to see their latest choice finally succeed.

The former Sporting boss is due to arrive on November 11 to take charge of a side that he will hope is fresh from a four-game unbeaten run since Ten Hag’s dismissal, with Leicester City up next for interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy. If the Dutchman defeats the Foxes for the second time in his short spell then he should consider his four-game tenure quite the success.
United’s recent turnaround doesn’t end the need for reinforcements, however, and those at Old Trafford seem to be well aware of that. According to reports in Spain, INEOS have now set their sights on Yunus Akgun, who has been compared to Turkey teammate and Real Madrid star Arda Guler.
The 24-year-old winger has reportedly emerged to become Manchester United’s latest target for Amorim after scoring six goals and assisting one other in 15 games for Galatasaray this season. On the scoresheet against United’s Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a recent 3-2 victory, Akgun is one to watch.
"Wonderful" Akgun would replace Antony
One of the first problem positions that Amorim must deal with is right-wing. Jadon Sancho tried and failed to star in that role to leave Manchester United spending big once again.
