Not just McCausland: £3.4m flop must never start for Rangers again

Glasgow Rangers showed plenty of fighting spirit under Barry Ferguson once again during his interim period in charge as they came back from 2-0 down to draw against Aberdeen.

The result was made even better by the fact that Ross McCausland was sent off for the Ibrox outfit after receiving a second yellow card just five minutes before the interval.

With the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final tie coming up against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday evening, it was evident that Ferguson was thinking ahead to that game, making nine changes to his team.

In the grand scheme of things, the result wasn’t important, especially as the domestic season is all but done for the Light Blues.

The game did present an ideal chance for several fringe players to make an impression against the Dons. The likes of Danilo, Rafael Fernandes, Findlay Curtis and McCausland were all given starts at Pittodrie.

Given the most important match of the season is fast approaching, none of the aforementioned players took their chance to shine against the Dons.

Ally McCoist speaking to Barry Ferguson for TNT Sports.

In McCausland’s case, his brief cameo on the pitch could well turn out to be one of his last games for the Ibrox side.

Why Ross McCausland was sent off against Aberdeen

The Northern Irish winger was given his first league start since the 2-1 loss to the same opponents all the way back in October 2024.

He received an early yellow card before he chopped down Aberdeen player Topi Keskinen in what was a senseless challenge that saw him receive a second yellow and ensured the Gers would play the rest of the game with ten men.

After breaking into the first-team squad last season due to an injury crisis, McCausland looked to have a bright future ahead of him, although there were certainly a few things to work on.

The current campaign hasn’t exactly been much of a success, as the winger has featured 25 times for the club, with only seven of those coming in the starting XI.

A tally of just three goals and a solitary assist has been registered from those matches, hardly numbers which have given the Ibrox faithful much confidence in his abilities.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Across his 13 league matches this term, the youngster has registered only 1.2 shots per game while creating no big chances, averaging just 0.6 key passes per match and succeeding with only 0.8 dribbles each appearance for the Light Blues.

In Europe, these numbers decrease even further, as he has averaged no key passes per game while succeeding with 0.7 dribbles and recording only 0.4 shots a match in the Europa League.

It has become evident that he isn’t up to the required standard to be a regular at the club, especially if the new manager wishes to embark on a title challenge next season.

If a decent offer arrives this summer, then McCausland should be offloaded at the first available opportunity, no doubt about that.

He isn’t the only one who must be sold when the summer transfer window opens either, as someone who was signed just last summer must headline the list of those expected to depart Rangers.

Bajrami's performance against Aberdeen in numbers

Nedim Bajrami was making his first start for the club since a 3-1 victory over Dundee United in January. With a chance to make a solid impression ahead of the second leg against Bilbao in midweek, it’s fair to say that the Albanian failed to take his chance.

Deployed in a deeper role than he is perhaps accustomed to, Bajrami struggled throughout the match, taking just 44 touches and completing only 25 of his 32 passes against the Dons.

Bajrami lost possession ten times, registered no shots and failed to deliver an accurate cross throughout his time on the pitch. The former Sassuolo man was subbed off with 25 minutes remaining and quite frankly, must not start again in Light Blue.

Bajrami

Journalist Ben Banks of Glasgow World gave Bajrami a match rating of just 4/10 for his performance on Sunday and it is clear he has regressed massively since arriving at Ibrox last summer.

With yet another lethargic display for the Light Blues, Bajrami may have started his last game for the club.

Why Bajrami could be sold this summer

The midfielder joined Rangers in a deal worth around £3.4m towards the end of the 2023 summer transfer window.

It appeared as though Philippe Clement had landed a decent signing, as Bajrami did showcase his talents during his first few months at Ibrox.

He scored on his first European start for the club against Malmö in September, adding goal involvements against Aberdeen, Dundee and Motherwell, with his goal against the latter sending the Gers through to the League Cup final.

Since the start of 2025, however, Bajrami has recorded only four assists in all competitions, with none coming in Europe.

Stevie Clifford, who runs the Four Lads Had a Dream, criticised the player back in January after a string of poor performances, saying: “I’ll highlight it again, it’s not singling him out, but Nedim Bajrami is not offering enough at all. We need him to influence games & be involved, largely anonymous so far, again. £4m is big money to do it in these type of games & he’s miles off it so far.”

He hasn’t become any more influential since Clifford said this and his spell in Glasgow may be short-lived, especially if a new coach comes in who wants to sell a few players to raise transfer funds.

If an offer comes in that would see Rangers recoup the majority of the £3.4m they paid for him, then the board will certainly be keen on accepting this, without a shadow of a doubt.

Some transfers work out well, while others don’t. That is the nature of the beast. In Bajrami, Rangers thought they had a player who might take them to the next level, especially considering he had shone at Euro 2024 and in Serie A. Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite worked out like that.

Barcelona to launch bid for Alejandro Grimaldo in cut-price €18m deal as La Liga champions nip ahead of Real Madrid to sign Bayer Leverkusen star

Barcelona are considering the possibility of bringing back Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen, with Real Madrid also eyeing the left-back.

According to , Barcelona continue to closely monitor Grimaldo as a potential reinforcement for the left-back position as they aim to provide an adequate back-up to Alejandro Balde. The Leverkusen star, who developed in La Masia, is highly valued for his quality and understanding of the club’s playing philosophy.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Although Barca are satisfied with Balde and Gerard Martin, there are concerns over the squad’s depth in high-stakes matches. Balde is the undisputed starter, excelling on both ends of the pitch, while the younger Martin impressed notably with two assists against Inter in the Champions League semi-final. However, relying on an inexperienced player like Martin in crucial matches is seen as a risk by the technical staff at the club. Given Grimaldo's adoption of the club's unique philosophy during his formative years, the Catalans believe that signing the Spanish international would be a sensible move.

DID YOU KNOW?

One thing that could complicate the deal for Barcelona is the fact that Grimaldo's ex-boss Xabi Alonso, who coached him for over two seasons, has recently become the head coach of Real Madrid. With Los Blancos hitting a stumbling block in their pursuit of Alvaro Carreras from Benfica, Grimaldo could be tempted to accept a call from Madrid and Alonso with the guarantee of becoming a starter.

gettyWHAT NEXT FOR ALEX GRIMALDO?

Grimaldo has a contract with Leverkusen until 2027 but is open to returning to La Liga. He reportedly has a release clause significantly lower than his €40 million (£34m/$46m) market value — estimated to be around €18m (£15m/$20m). It remains to be seen where the full-back heads next season.

"Devastating" Rangers star is now their most important player since Morelos

Rangers in the Europa League strike once again.

On Thursday night, despite being without a permanent manager and enduring a horrendous domestic campaign, the Gers once again saved their best for a European tie.

Barry Ferguson’s side beat Fenerbahçe 3-1 at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in the first leg of their round of 16 tie, so are now in pole position to reach the quarter-finals, considering the club have advanced through all 21 two-legged European ties in which they’ve won the first leg beforehand.

During Thursday’s famous win in İstanbul, one Rangers star in particular underlined his importance, potentially the club’s most effective attacking difference maker since a club great of the not-too-distant past.

Alfredo Morelos' Rangers career

Back in June 2017, Rangers signed a 21-year-old by the name of Alfredo Morelos for just £1m from Veikkausliiga champions HJK Helsinki, and this certainly proved to be money well spent.

Alfredo Morelos

Then manager Steven Gerrard described the Colombian international striker as “fantastic” and, with these statistics, it’s easy to understand why.

Morelos’ tally of 124 goals for Rangers means he is one of only 18 men to have netted 100 or more times for the club, while only captain James Tavernier and Kris Boyd have scored more in the 21st century.

Nicknamed el Bufalo, the striker’s best work certainly came on the continent, scoring 29 times in UEFA competition, thereby becoming Rangers’ all-time top-scorer in Europe, smashing Ally McCoist’s long-standing record of 21.

Meantime, in 2019, the Colombian scored 14 of these goals during Europa League qualifying and then the group phase, the most any player has ever managed pre-Christmas in any UEFA tournament.

Morelos departed for Santos in 2023, he’s currently on loan at Atlético Nacional, and many Rangers supporters may argue they’ve never replaced his goals, perhaps until now.

Rangers' latest European hero

Václav Černý was unquestionably the hero on Thursday night, scoring twice during the crucial victory over Fenerbahçe, but this was merely a continuation of his exceptional form.

Černý’s performances in general have been “devastating”, as per analyst John Walker, with the aforementioned club legend Boyd, speaking on Sky Sports following December’s 2-2 draw with Motherwell at Firk Park, exclaiming “where would Rangers be if it wasn’t for him”?

So, let’s take a look at the Czech international’s numbers this season.

The table underlines Černý’s importance to this Rangers team, with only Cyriel Dessers, the other mid-week scorer at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, having netted more across all competitions for the club this season.

The direct comparison to Morelos comes from the Czech winger’s tendency to save his best for Thursday nights.

Having previously netted twice against Steaua București, also on target in victories against Nice and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the league phase, Černý now has six Europa League goals to his name this season.

Only two players, namely Tavernier and Morelos, have scored more goals in a single European campaign since the club’s return to the Premiership.

Vaclav Cerny

In this season’s Europa League, only Ayoub El Kaabi (seven) of Olympiacos, who scored against Rangers in November, has more goals, while Černý is joint-top, alongside Olympique Lyonnais wonderkid Rayan Cherki, when it comes to goal-involvements, both on eight.

Černý is, of course, only on loan at Ibrox but, according to a report by Mark Walker of the National, his parent club Wolfsburg would be willing to sell the winger for as little as £6.75m, a deal Rangers must do everything in their power to finalise, regardless of whom the manager is going to be long-term.

£30m star failed big time at Leeds, now he's outscoring Summerville

After relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season, Leeds United dropped into the Championship, with Daniel Farke taking over as manager at Elland Road.

Countless players departed the club during the German’s first summer at the helm, giving him a tricky task to assemble a side that was good enough to challenge for promotion.

However, the Whites excelled throughout last season, producing numerous superb performances, including the 2-1 win against fellow title challengers Leicester City.

Leeds United star Archie Gray

Ultimately, Farke’s side would fall at the final hurdle, losing 1-0 in the play-off final against Southampton at Wembley, with the boss once again losing key players after their failure to secure an immediate top-flight return.

One of those players caught the eye massively during the 2023/24 campaign, thriving with added minutes in the Championship and playing a huge role in their ability to get so close to promotion.

Crysencio Summerville’s stats for Leeds in 2023/24

Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville joined Leeds way back in 2021 but would have to bide his time to make a first-team impact, subsequently joining up with the academy side in Yorkshire.

The 2022/23 season would be his breakthrough year, featuring 33 times across all competitions but notching just four goals and being unable to prevent the club from dropping into the second tier.

summerville-leeds-premier-league-everton-transfers

However, relegation would be a blessing for his career, finally stepping up to the plate and registering 20 goals and nine assists in 46 league outings last campaign – subsequently claiming the Championship Player of the Year award.

Such form, coupled with the club’s failure to secure promotion, would see the 23-year-old leave Elland Road in a £25m deal to join West Ham United over the summer, banking the hierarchy a huge profit but also losing one of their star performers.

He’s since been unable to match such high levels of performance during his time in the capital, currently being outscored by one player who failed to deliver during his own stint in Yorkshire.

The former Leeds flop who’s outscored Summerville in 2024/25

Striker Eddie Nketiah joined Leeds on loan from Arsenal back in the promotion-winning campaign of 2019/20 but was ultimately unable to dislodge Patrick Bamford from the number nine role at Elland Road.

Marcelo Bielsa opted for the former fan-favourite over the loanee, restricting the young star to minutes off the bench or even cup minutes for his game time – starting just two Championship outings.

The now 25-year-old would score five times in his 19 appearances before having his move cut short and returning to the Emirates halfway through his season-long loan.

He’s since enjoyed multiple impressive seasons for the Gunners, notching four times in the same season as he was recalled, offering a key option in forward areas for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Nketiah continued in such vein for numerous years, scoring 31 times over the following four years, playing a key role in their attempts to end their own drought for a league triumph.

Arguably, his most impressive display came in the demolition of Sheffield United last season, scoring a hat-trick as he looked to become the Gunners’ main man at the top end of the pitch.

However, he was unable to do so, leaving in a £30m deal to join Crystal Palace last summer, but has once again struggled for starts, but has still managed to post a higher goalscoring tally than Summerville.

The former Leeds loanee has only started nine times for the Eagles across 2024/25, but has registered four goals in all competitions – a figure higher than that of the Dutchman, who’s only managed to find the net on one occasion.

There’s no denying both players are huge talents, possessing the skillset to make them top talents in the Premier League – showcasing their development after their respective periods in Yorkshire.

As for Nketiah, he’s demonstrated that football is a game of opinions, certainly proving numerous doubters wrong and putting his career in the right direction after his stop-start loan spell under Bielsa.

He's now more prolific than Piroe: Leeds must rue selling magnificent star

The former Leeds United star is now a free-scoring £8.3m-rated centre-forward.

O jogo, no entanto, acabou ficando no empate e decepcionando quase 40 mil palmeirenses.

E agora?

Spirited SL scent famous series win against shaky India

Big picture – The ODI learning curve

And they said the middle overs in an ODI are dull. India and Sri Lanka are playing a series where all of the action is contained in the exact period where the 50-over format tends to be dull. And that’s largely because they have been playing these games – the first of which ended in a tie – on pitches that challenge a batter, in ways that extend far beyond technique. The Khettarama is asking people to play cricket thinking two overs ahead; to avoid the expansive drive just even if the ball seems to be tossed up, because that juicy half-volley is actually going to dip and turn to go past the middle of the bat and take the edge through to slip.Restraint is the very thing that India have spent the better part of two years beating out of themselves, but now it is the very thing that stands between them and a bit of a black mark on a very proud record. They have lost only five out of 22 bilateral ODI series. They have won the last 10 rubbers against Sri Lanka – a streak that will come to an end regardless of the result on Wednesday – and that is tribute to the way this Sri Lanka side has performed even though it is missing several first-teamers. They are certainly shading the middle-overs battle, averaging 24.7 and losing only 10 wickets to India’s 17.8 and 14 wickets.Related

He is one of two men in this series to strike at better than run a ball and the other one has been playing this format for almost as long as he has been alive.Whether India win and level the series or Sri Lanka win and claim it 2-0, these three games are likely to be an important learning curve for both teams and that is a check in the box next to why bilateral ODI cricket is still worth it (just, does it to be eight hours long?).

In the spotlight – Virat Kohli and Avishka Fernando

Virat Kohli has only one fifty in his last 15 innings for India across formats. But here’s the thing. He doesn’t look out of form. And this is ODI cricket as well. He could probably write five different books about it – and star in their movie adaptations – and still not be done explaining how well he knows it. So a big score is probably on the horizon, and even if it isn’t, he isn’t the sort to be fussed about his numbers, not as long as he feels good in training and doesn’t have to force himself to be involved. That’s when there will be cause for worry.Avishka Fernando is the best of both worlds. He can finesse the ball to the boundary, or if the mood strikes him, inflict that same ball to a whole lot worse. He puts attacking shots together like the rest of us put two and two together. It’s just that natural to him. Except sometimes he might get carried away, which is why 26 of his 40 innings have ended at or before the 30-run mark and 17 of those innings have been single-digits. He’ll be pushing himself to justify the talent he has and take his place as one of Sri Lanka’s mainstays.Sri Lanka have edged the middle-overs battle so far in the series•AFP/Getty Images

Team news – Does Parag have a chance?

Sri Lanka hit a sweet combination packing their side with spinners for the last game, which helped them drag India down from 97 for 0 to 147 for 6.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Kusal Mendis (wk), 4 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 5 Charith Asalanka (capt), 6 Janith Liyanage, 7 Dunith Wellalage, 8 Kamindu Mendis, 9 Jeffrey Vandersay, 10 Akila Dananjaya, 11 Asitha FernandoIndia might weigh up the pros and cons of Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag. Dube is a proven spin-hitter, which is sure to come in handy, but Parag offers them a bowling option that is better suited to the conditions. Or if they’re feeling really funky, they might drop a quick bowler to bring in Parag and hand Dube the new ball.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 KL Rahul (wk), 6 Shivam Dube/Riyan Parag, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Arshdeep Singh

Pitch and conditions: Bit of rain around

There are chances of showers in Colombo both leading up to and during the game, but it is unlikely that the whole thing will be washed off. Spinners have bowled twice as many balls (812 vs 351) as the quicks and picked up almost four times as many wickets (29 vs 8). Consider yourself warned.

Quotes

“We have very good batters. When it comes to their attack they’ve got great variety in legspin, offspin and left-arm spin. We need to find a way to put them under pressure. That’s why a left-hander is in the middle in the middle overs.”
