Kohli, Rahane keep India alive in hunt of 444

Earlier, Carey’s 66* allowed Australia to declare on 270 for 8

Karthik Krishnaswamy10-Jun-2023Under bright skies and on an Oval pitch that seemed to ease out against all expectations, India’s batters set up a potentially thrilling final day, racing to 164 for 3 at more than four an over to keep alive their pursuit of a world-record fourth-innings target. Australia remain favourites, with India needing a further 280 on the final day, but they may have a lot of hard work ahead of them to take the seven remaining wickets, with the second new ball 40 overs away.India may have still felt a little cross with themselves at stumps, though, losing perhaps a wicket more than they would have liked by then, two of them to aggressive shots. Rohit Sharma was lbw to Nathan Lyon, missing a sweep from a stump-to-stump line, and Cheteshwar Pujara toe-ended an attempted ramp over the slips off a Pat Cummins bouncer. Both batters will argue, though, that these are shots they usually play well. They will also argue that the same positivity had helped them stitch a second-wicket stand of 51 in 77 balls. The two wickets, however, fell in the space of five balls, turning 92 for 1 to 93 for 3.It was the perfect opening for Australia to bulldoze through, but Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane were having none of it. They ended the day reprising the same positivity that had gone before, putting on an unbroken 71 for the fourth wicket, with both batters looking in excellent ball-striking rhythm. Conditions, too, didn’t seem to test them, with the pitch showing far less tendency to produce inconsistent bounce than it had done through the first three innings of the match. Kohli and Rahane ended the day with control percentages of 93 and 97 respectively. As they safely negotiated the last over of the day, a largely India-supporting crowd was in fine voice, a section of them belting out this number from the 1975 blockbuster : ” [we’ll never break this friendship].” Australia will want to break it as soon as possible when day five dawns. The crowd had been far less pleased some two hours earlier, though, after India lost their first wicket off what ended up as the last ball before tea, following a near-run-a-ball opening partnership of 41. Scott Boland got one to straighten and kick in the corridor, Shubman Gill pushed at it with hard hands, and Cameron Green dived low to his left to pluck out a superlative gully catch, his second of the match. Gill stood his ground, though, and the decision went up to the third umpire. As is often the case with these low grabs, replays seemed inconclusive, but the decision went in Australia’s favour.Chants of “Cheat! Cheat! Cheat!” continued to follow Green through the rest of the evening, particularly when he bowled. A World Test Championship that had been full of quality cricket now had the one ingredient it had been missing: controversy and needle.1:37

Was Green’s catch to dismiss Gill clean?

During the first session of the day, Green had had a far different effect on the crowd, keeping them quiet as he added 18 runs in 87 balls to his overnight score of 7. His dismissal was in keeping with the tone of his innings: he attempted to pad away a Ravindra Jadeja delivery from over the wicket only for the ball to hit his pad and roll onto the wicket.By then, Australia had added 44 to their overnight 123 for 4 while losing two wickets in 19 overs – Marnus Labuschagne the other batter dismissed, nicking Umesh Yadav to first slip. India had bowled with discipline while extracting just enough from the surface to keep the batters vigilant; with Australia’s lead just 340, they may have hoped to wrap their innings up before it got to 400.Alex Carey, however, ensured that it swelled well beyond that figure, scoring an opportunistic 66 to go with his 48 in the first innings, and putting on 93 for the seventh wicket with Mitchell Starc. Both batters began cautiously and had their moments of discomfort, particularly against Jadeja finding sharp turn and bounce from the footmarks outside the left-handers’ off stump, but grew increasingly confident as India’s quicks tired.Mohammed Shami, who had bowled frugally and beaten the bat multiple times without any reward in his previous spells, came back when India took the second new ball and dismissed Starc and Pat Cummins when they were looking to slog for quick runs. Australia declared at the stroke of Cummins’ dismissal, setting India a never-before-achieved 444 to win.It may have been a nostalgia-inducing moment among old-timers at the ground. In 1979, a Sunil Gavaskar double-hundred had inspired India to a thrilling draw at The Oval; they finished on 429 for 8 after being set 438 by England. There’s still a chance that Sunday may bring similar levels of excitement.

The hottest property in Scotland: Celtic could sign their next Christie

da 888: Celtic’s excellent season continues. On Saturday evening, the Hoops battled through to the Scottish Cup fifth round, overcoming Kilmarnock 2-1 at Parkhead, with Callum McGregor’s long-range strike breaking the deadlock, before Daizen Maeda stroked home the winner for the Parkhead side later on.

da stake casino: Meantime, Brendan Rodgers’ side are 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership, have already hoisted aloft the League Cup and are on course to reach the Champions League knockout stages, ahead of Wednesday’s crucial clash with the competition’s bottom side BSC Young Boys in Glasgow. What could go wrong?

Meantime, off the park, the Hoops are yet to make a January signing, but are chasing the hottest prospect in Scottish football right now.

Celtic could sign teenaged Premiership star

As reported by Steve Scott of Sky Sports, Motherwell have rejected a £2.5m bid from Serie A outfit Udinese for star midfielder Lennon Miller.

Back in November, John McGarry of the Daily Mail claimed that Celtic, as well as Rangers, are interested in Miller, a player he described as the “hottest property in Scottish football”, with Dominic McColgan adding that Motherwell are steadfast in their belief that their star man is worth £4m.

After joining Motherwell as an eight-year-old, Miller made his debut against Inverness Caley Thistle in August 2022, coming less than a week after his 16th birthday, making a total of 63 appearances for the Steelmen to date, scoring five goals and providing nine assists.

Back in November, with neither Paul McGinn nor Stephen O’Donnell available, he became the youngest captain in the Well’s 138-year history, leading the team out at Hampden no less for a League Cup semi-final against Rangers.

His father Lee is a well-known figure within Scottish football, having played for Falkirk, Hearts, Dundee United, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and others, winning three international caps, a tally the as-yet uncapped Lennon will surely surpass soon.

What Lennon Miller would bring to Celtic

As an 18-year-old scorer of two goals and supplier of six assists in just 19 SPFL games this term, the teenager would bring quality in abundance, notably in forward areas.

Such eye-catching form has led journalist Kenny Millar to describe the midfield maestro as “brilliant”, while former Birmingham, Everton and Motherwell midfielder James McFadden said on Sky Sports that he has “no doubt he’ll make the club a lot of money eventually”.

So, could Celtic be the club who pay big cash to secure his services?

As noted in the table, Celtic paid £3.25m for David Turnbull’s services five seasons ago, a club-record sale for Motherwell, who are seeking an even higher fee to sell Miller.

Despite the obvious club comparison to Turnbull, Miller is more stylistically similar to Ryan Christie, given that both are goal-scoring midfielders who are capable of arriving late into the box and scoring goals, while the pair also have a long-range strike on them.

Christie won nine major trophies during his time in Glasgow, scoring 42 goals and accumulating 44 assists in 151 appearances before being sold to Bournemouth in 2021.

Miller is even more highly-rated than Christie ever was at Caley Thistle, and could take his game to the next level, should he choose to join the Premiership champions.

Cook in command of England's new beginnings

Victory in South Africa has added another mighty notch to Alastair Cook’s burgeoning captaincy CV, but his team are still at the beginning of their journey

George Dobell in Johannesburg16-Jan-2016Alastair Cook isn’t really the type to flash a ‘Talk nah, KP’ note in the moment of triumph, but he probably could have been forgiven had he done so in Johannesburg.Victory here means Cook is the only man in history to lead his side to Test series victories in India and South Africa. When you add in a couple of Ashes wins, you have what has become – despite all the criticism – a deeply impressive track record. History may reflect on Cook, as a batsman and a leader, and wonder what all the fuss was about. He has experienced a modest series with the bat. In correcting his weakness outside off stump, he may have created another one off his hip. But we have experienced blips in Cook’s form before and know enough to suggest patience will be rewarded. Besides, it is not as if England have a surplus of opening batsmen demanding selection. But Cook did enjoy a couple of fine moments as leader on the final day here. The first was the decision to persist with Stuart Broad after three wicketless overs at the start of the innings – in the first innings he replaced him with Steven Finn after a similarly unpromising start. The second was the placement of James Taylor at an unusually deep short-leg position. As he claimed two inspired catches – chances that he would have had no chance of holding had he been in the conventional short-leg position – Cook could feel quietly satisfied with himself. So could Broad. After a disappointing first innings – he admitted he bowled too short and confirmed rumours that he had been struggling with a stomach ailment – he harnessed helpful conditions perfectly in the second innings. His spell of five wickets for one run – and that run was from a dropped catch – included two of the best batsmen in the world. These spells are occurring too frequently to be dismissed as fortunate. The truth is, in conditions offering some assistance, he really is a terrific bowler.

Clever Trevor applies the coup de arse

Alastair Cook admitted a “kick up the arse” from the England coach, Trevor Bayliss, inspired England to a match-defining afternoon session in Johannesburg.

Bayliss, who has gained a reputation as a quietly spoken man during his few months with England, surprised the team in the lunch interval by making it very clear that they were facing a perfect opportunity to clinch the series in the next couple of hours and that, if they looked back at the end of the day having failed to take the chance, he would be mightily unimpressed.

England subsequently claimed all ten South Africa second-innings wickets for 60 runs after lunch, with Stuart Broad producing a spell of five wickets for one run.

“Trev gave us a kick up the arse at lunch,” Cook said “He said, ‘if you want to win the series this is the time to grab the opportunity. There is a chance out there if someone is willing to step up and you don’t want to be sat at the end of the day wishing you’d given a bit more.’

“The chat was from a guy that doesn’t say too much. Rather than sulking about it, the lads looked at themselves. There was a real intensity in the field for that two-hour session. It really helped.

“Stuart Broad steamed in after Trev had a few harsh words for us. It is a privilege to captain him and when he gets on a roll like that you just let him go.

“It seemed to work, so well done Trevor.”

Some will point to the absence of Dale Steyn and suggest England’s victory is a little hollow. It is true that Steyn, and Vernon Philander, would have strengthened this South Africa side. But it hasn’t been their bowling that has let them down, it has been their batting. And, odd though it sounds, they lost this Test as much in the first innings, when their soft dismissals failed to punish an under-par bowling display from England, as in the second, when they were undone by fine bowling and outstanding fielding on a very tricky surface. But the most impressive aspect of this victory – a three-day victory over the No. 1-ranked Test side – from an England perspective was that it felt like the beginning. That is probably just the way it should be. This is, in truth, a South Africa side in decline – especially without Steyn – and hugely impressive though England have been, they are going to face tougher challenges in the next couple of years. Already the five-match series in India (later this year) and Australia (late in 2017) look mouth-watering.Besides, if England require any sobering-up on Sunday morning – Cook said at the presentation that Andrew Strauss, England’s director of cricket, had personally sanctioned a very late night – they will receive it with a reminder of where they stand in the grand scheme of things. Win, lose or draw in Centurion, England will be no higher than No. 5 when the ICC Test rankings are published at the end of the series. If that seems low – and it does seem incongruous that the new No. 1 side, India, have lost nine of their last 13 Tests against England – it is worth remembering the defeat in Barbados, the defeats in Leeds (against Sri Lanka and New Zealand), the defeats in the UAE and, most of all, the defeat against Australia at Lord’s. They remain a work in progress.”They are much better than that ranking,” AB de Villiers said afterwards. “They are a good, well-balanced team. Hopefully we won’t let them get to No. 1 in the rankings, but they have a bright future.”It is, in an odd way, encouraging that Jimmy Anderson has played a relatively minor role in this victory. There was a time – most memorably at Trent Bridge in 2013, but also in India in 2012 – when the England seam attack was too heavily reliant upon him. While it is too early to predict his demise – if anyone has earned a modest game, it is Anderson – it does bode well that Ben Stokes and Finn are developing into potent figures in their own right. Finn may well miss the final Test with a side strain, but he has cemented his position as a first-choice selection now. There were many architects of this victory. There was Jonny Bairstow, who again contributed valuable runs – no England wicketkeeper has scored as many runs in a Test series since 2007 – and claimed nine catches and run-out. There was Joe Root, who confirmed his position alongside Steven Smith, Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson as one of the best young batsmen in the world with an innings that dwarfed all other batting performances in the match. There was Stokes, who batted and bowled with a class that is becoming familiar. And there was Broad. The Wanderers scoreboard tells the story•Getty ImagesThere have been a couple of key differences between the sides in this series. The first, and most obvious, is the depth of the England side in batting and bowling. Whereas England have nearly always (Cape Town pushed this theory to its limits) had a fresh bowler to turn to, South Africa have rotated four decent bowlers to the point of exhaustion. The rise of Ben Stokes and the departure of Jacques Kallis has changed the dynamic between these teams drastically since 2012.The other key difference is harder to quantify. But while much of the talk around the South Africa camp in recent weeks has been about potential retirements and T20 commitments, the talk in the England camp has been about winning this Test series. The fact is, England’s players can afford to focus entirely on Test cricket. That’s why, when the BCCI announce the list of players involved in the IPL auction, there will be no Alex Hales, no Moeen Ali (the first Andrew Strauss knew of his intention to enter into the auction was when he read it on ESPNcricinfo), no David Willey and no Adil Rashid. In a perfect world, all of them would love to go. But they value a Test place above all and the benefit of the ECB’s relative financial strength is they need not prioritise T20 for their long-term financial future. Right or wrong, money talks in international cricket these days. There have been many parallels in this series to the last encounter between these sides in 2012. At that time, England were the No. 1 side, on the wane and beset by internal troubles, and South Africa the hungry challengers, pushing for the crown and on the brink of a few years of Test domination. This time the roles are reversed. It is too early to say whether England will go on to enjoy a similar period at the top of the rankings, but they are heading in the right direction.

Western Australia's trophy surge continues with back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles

Western Australia cemented their status as domestic cricket’s undisputed powerhouse with a crushing nine-wicket victory over Victoria to emphatically complete a back-to-back Sheffield Shield triumph.Having bowled out Victoria for 210 in their second innings, WA chased down the 91-run target in the second session on day four. Their 17th Shield title was secured when opener Cameron Bancroft, the leading run-scorer in the competition, hit the winning runs to trigger scenes of jubilation around the WACA.As expected against a strong Victoria attack, WA were made to work and lost skipper Sam Whiteman for his seventh duck of the Shield season when he was trapped lbw to unrelenting seamer Scott Boland.Related

It was Boland’s 300th Shield wicket and he almost added another when he caught an edge from teenager Teague Wyllie only for skipper Peter Handscomb to drop a tough chance at second slip. But WA were not to be denied as they completed a historic treble of domestic titles for the second straight season. They thrashed South Australia in the 50-over Marsh Cup final and Perth Scorchers overcame Brisbane Heat in an epic BBL decider.WA’s revelry was held up by impressive allrounder Will Sutherland, who superly backed his attacking instincts with 83 off 84 balls but Victoria’s lead just wasn’t enough.Victoria started day four at 6 for 122 with their slim hopes resting on Sutherland and Mitchell Perry, who had both defied WA late on day three.Sutherland was almost caught at long on in the first over but settled in after that in a gutsy performance having been moved down to No.8 due to a back injury. The batters looked comfortable until Perry was caught behind off quick Matthew Kelly, who was on a hat-trick after a cracker of a delivery knocked over Fergus O’Neill.Matt Kelly made quick inroads on the fourth morning•Getty Images

The end was nigh but Sutherland received support from Todd Murphy, who offered resistance having had little impact with the ball in his return from a breakout Test tour of India. As Victoria’s lead approached triple figures, Murphy’s defiance ended on 26 when he was caught at point off allrounder Aaron Hardie.Sutherland, who claimed five wickets in WA’s first innings, holed out just shy of a deserved century but capped a strong allround season and looms as a player of interest for the national selectors. After being sent in on a green-tinged surface, Victoria managed just 195 in their first innings with 21-year-old opener Ashley Chandrasinghe mustering the only substantial fight. In a rearguard that polarised public opinion, Chandrasinghe carried his bat to finish unbeaten on 46 from 280 balls but Victoria failed to collect any bonus points.WA struggled in response at 4 for 53 before veteran Ashton Turner scored a drought-breaking century to power his team to 315 and a lead of 120 runs.Having only recently returned to WA’s Shield side after a near three-year exile, Turner counterpunched to notch his first Shield ton since November 2017.Turner’s heroics dented Victoria’s hopes of avenging last season’s final where they fell short to WA in a drawn match decided by bonus points.Victoria can take heart out of a spectacular turnaround after they were staring down the barrel mid-season before storming into the final with five straight wins.An emerging Victoria, marked by an exciting pace attack, are on the cusp of a formidable run but will be left pondering how they can knock off all-conquering WA, who are firmly amid a golden era.

Dream Martinelli upgrade: Arsenal have made £50m PL star a top target

They may have continued their impressive Champions League form on Wednesday night, but domestically, Arsenal’s season has not gone as planned.

Mikel Arteta’s side came into the campaign hopeful of finally getting their hands on the title, but as things stand, they find themselves six points off leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Worse still, the North Londoners crashed out of the FA Cup at home to a dire Manchester United side and will have to overturn a 2-0 deficit away to Newcastle United next month to make it to the League Cup Final.

There have been issues across the pitch for the Gunners, but it is in attack where much of the frustration stems, and while he has shown glimpses of quality this year, Gabriel Martinelli continues to underwhelm.

It has been almost two years since we have seen the mercurial Brazilian at his dangerous best, and now the club might be losing patience with him as well, with recent reports touting a Premier League star who could be his potential replacement with a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal chasing Premier League game-changer

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are interested in Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo, whom they have identified as their top alternative to the injured Bukayo Saka.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, they are not the only team keen on the Ghanaian international, as the report has revealed that fellow Premier League sides Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on the situation.

On top of the potential competition, the Gunners will also have to stump up a sizable fee, as according to the report, the Cherries are reluctant to sell their star, whom they value at around £50m.

Antoine Semenyo scores for Bournemouth

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Semenyo’s ability and potential, it is well worth pursuing.

Moreover, while he might be seen as a player to cover for the injured Saka, he could also be the long-term upgrade on Martinelli.

How Semenyo compares to Martinelli

Okay, so the first thing to point out is that, yes, in the immediate future, Semenyo would be an excellent stand-in for the injured Saka, as following Jesus’ injury against United, the only somewhat natural option Arteta has on that side is Ethan Nwaneri.

Antoine Semenyo for Bournemouth.

However, due to his impressive versatility combined with the fact he’s one of the few genuinely two-footed players in the Premier League, the Bournemouth ace’s long-term role at Arsenal would likely be off the left, as we don’t know if there is a player in world football that the manager would start over a fit Saka on the right.

So, how does the 25-year-old dynamo stack up to Martinelli, who would likely be his main competition for game time on that side of the frontline?

Well, from a pure output perspective, it’s a clear win for the “unplayable” winger, as dubbed by football journalist Ed Aarons, as in just 23 appearances totalling 1908 minutes this season, he has scored seven goals and provided four assists, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 2.09 games, or every 173.45 minutes.

In contrast, the former Ituano gem has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 31 appearances, totalling 2161 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 3.1 games, or every 216.1 minutes.

Moreover, on top of being able to produce impressive levels of output for a team outside the traditional ‘big six,’ the “versatile forward,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is also a big game player, having scored a goal against Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest and providing an assist home and away against Newcastle United, all this season.

Ultimately, while he might not be the biggest name around, Semenyo has cemented himself as one of the most exciting and effective forwards in the Premier League this year. Therefore, Arsenal should be doing all they can to bring him in this month, even if it could be bad news for Martinelli’s long term future at the club.

Arsenal’s answer to Gordon: Arteta wants to sign £165k-p/w star this month

While there is still a lot to play for this season, the mood around Arsenal is not great at the moment.

Mikel Arteta’s side remain a distant second in the Premier League and look set to exit the League Cup next month thanks to their 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United in the first leg of their semi-final last night.

The Gunners would have been hoping to take at least a one-goal lead to St James’ Park, but the Toon had other ideas, and while Alexander Isak grabbed the headlines, Anthony Gordon put in yet another brilliant performance off the left.

The former Everton star has been sensational for the Magpies this season and scored their second goal last night, so recent reports linking Arsenal to a winger compared to him should excite the fans.

Arsenal chase continental champion

According to a recent report from respected journalist David Ornstein, Arsenal have maintained their strong interest in Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

In fact, Ornstein claims that Arteta would like the club to sign the European champion in this window, but the finances involved would make that incredibly difficult to do.

For example, the talented winger has a release clause in his contract currently worth €60m – £50m – which adjusts for inflation, and on top of paying that in one go, the North Londoners would have to accommodate the player’s enormous wage, which supposedly stands at around £165k-per-week.

In all, it would be an incredibly costly transfer to get over the line, but given Williams’ ability and potential, it is one worth pursuing, especially as he’s been compared to Gordon.

How Williams compares to Gordon and why Arsenal should sign him

So, before we get to the reasons why Arsenal should be looking to sign Williams this month, let’s examine this comparison to Gordon and where it comes from.

Well, it primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Englishman is the fourth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Spaniard over the last 365 days.

We can get a better understanding of how this conclusion was reached by looking at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, expected assists, shots, progressive passes, crosses, goal-creating actions, carries and more, all per 90.

With that said, there are other reasons the North Londoners should be looking to sign the Copa del Rey winner, perhaps most notably, his output.

Now, it would be fair to say that his tally of two goals and five assists in 24 appearances this season is somewhat underwhelming, but we saw just how effective the Spanish international could be last year.

For example, in just 37 appearances last season, the “unbelievable” live-wire, as dubbed by ex-professional Mike Grella, scored eight goals and provided 19 assists, meaning he maintained a sublime average of a goal involvement every 1.37 games – just imagine someone that effective on the opposite flank to Bukayo Saka.

Lastly, something the Gunners have been calling out for over the last season and a half is a left-winger who can, and often does, take on and beat their man, which is precisely what the Pamplona-born game-changer does.

For example, FBref places him in the top 6% of attacking midfielders or wingers across Europe’s top five leagues for successful take-ons per 90.

Ultimately, while signing Williams this month would represent a massive investment from Arsenal, it looks like he’d be an investment worth making.

Fofana replacement: Chelsea want to sign a £67m Gabriel & Saliba hybrid

Chelsea faltered yet again against Bournemouth, giving up a 1-0 lead to go 2-1 down in the second half at Stamford Bridge. Luckily for Enzo Maresca’s side, club captain Reece James managed to score a 95th-minute freekick after returning from injury this week, to rescue the Blues a point.

An inability to hold onto their leads, starting second halves slowly and then losing control of games as the team comes under adversity, have all been common themes of late for Maresca’s men. In recent weeks, the Blues have lost 1-0 leads to Fulham, Crystal Palace and now Bournemouth, also dropping points against Ipswich and Everton.

Whilst a big part of this is the inexperience and age of the squad, the balance has also been off since the injury to Wesley Fofana, which could see the Chelsea directors move in the January transfer window for a replacement for their star right central defender.

Chelsea's search for a centre-back

According to reports from GIVEMESPORT earlier this week, Chelsea have been keeping an eye on Sporting defender, Ousmane Diomande, scouting the 21-year-old in the Taca de Liga final last weekend.

Reports from before the summer window in 2024 stated his price would be somewhere around his €80 million release clause (£67m).

Other names the Blues are said to be watching in Portugal include Benfica pair, Tomas Araujo and Antonio Silva, as Chelsea look primed to move on from Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi.

Diomande has made 25 appearances so far this season, contributing to ten clean sheets in all competitions, totalling 1,893 minutes played.

Diomande vs Fofana comparison

Fofana has made 12 appearances for Chelsea this season (all 12 coming in the Premier League), contributing to three clean sheets and totalling 1,017 minutes played. Maresca himself even praised Fofana, stating “I love Wes” and calling the Frenchman a “fighter”.

That said, Diomande has been described by Ben Mattinson as a “hybrid between Gabriel & [William] Saliba”, having the physical elements to his game, alongside the technical quality to progress the ball and play out from the back in an elite possession-based system.

That likeness to the Arsenal pairing – who have been dubbed the best centre-back duo in Europe by Rio Ferdinand – among other factors, ensures he could actually represent a perfect replacement for Fofana.

When comparing the two players’ metrics from this season, you can see the added responsibility Diomande has on the ball, averaging more passes attempted and making more progressive passes for his side.

However, his progressive carries are down, due to playing in the middle of a back three this season, rather than as the wide central defender like he did last season, which is more similar to Fofana’s role under Maresca.

Both defenders excel with excellent physical attributes, having brilliant recovery pace, long leg extension to aid their ground duels and an aggressive nature when attacking the ball, helping them to win aerial duels and make the first contact.

Diomande would offer a brilliant replacement for Fofana, adding the attributes back to Maresca’s side that have been missing since the Frenchman’s injury. The main issue that could come up later down the line, is when Fofana returns to full fitness, who becomes the starter?

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Since his high-profile switch from Ajax in 2023, Onana has come under increasing scrutiny for his performances between the posts at Old Trafford. A string of costly mistakes has prompted United to look at other options in the market, and according to Ruben Amorim is eyeing Verbruggen as a potential replacement.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have already reached out to Brighton to discuss Verbruggen’s availability. The keeper joined Brighton from Anderlecht in 2023 for around €20 million (£17 million), and the club is understood to be looking for at least double that figure if they are to part ways with their first-choice keeper. With a contract running until June 2028, Brighton are under no pressure to sell and are likely to demand a fee in the region of £60 million.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The Dutchman is the latest in a string of names linked with United, including Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens, and Burnley’s James Trafford. Despite his reputation, Verbruggen currently holds a lower save percentage than Onana and has been responsible for more individual errors leading to goals.

    WHAT NEXT?

United aren’t the only European heavyweight keeping tabs on the talented 22-year-old. Bayern Munich are reportedly monitoring Verbruggen closely as they prepare for potential changes in their own goalkeeping department, while AC Milan are also contemplating bringing him to San Siro, given Mike Maignan’s contract expires in June 2026.
