'Coach has that chip on his shoulder' – Herculez Gomez praises Canada's Jesse Marsch for stronger team buy-in than Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT

The former USMNT striker indicated that the USMNT might feel a sense of envy regarding the stable player pool Marsch has established at Canada

    WHAT HAPPENED

With the U.S. unable to field their strongest squad – several key players, including Christian Pulisic, withdrew from the Gold Cup – former USMNT striker Herculez Gomez drew a comparison to Jesse Marsch’s Canada. The Canadian manager subtly suggested he may have a more favorable situation than his CONCACAF rivals.

“There's been a certain dialogue with certain teams in the region about the Gold Cup and whether players want to come or not," he said. "I haven't had one discussion that's been like, 'Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm going to make it,'" Marsch told GOAL.

This consistency has allowed Marsch to build a cohesive tactical approach and team culture, something the USMNT has struggled to achieve amid ongoing availability challenges.

“That quote we just saw, this is Jesse Marsch if you know Jesse Marsch,” Gomez said on . “And nobody should be surprised that Jesse Marsch speaks this way or that his team feels this way. Marsch has these players playing – and rightfully so – with a chip on their shoulder.

“Great work from [GOAL writer] Tom Hindle to get Jesse Marsch to talk about the U.S., even though he does not like talking about the U.S., nor does he mention the U.S. But you know who he’s going after, and I love it, and he’s right. His team, the Canadian men’s national team, have that chip on their shoulder because the coach has that chip on his shoulder."

Gomez pointed to the lack of attention the Reds get, outside of Marsch, as the reason why the group is motivated to contend at this year's Gold Cup.

“There is no player on that field who doesn’t feel like North America talks more about the Americans, North America talks more about Mexico, and there is no player on that team who feels like, the Americans or the Mexicans are more than the Canadian national team. And they want to go out and they want to fight for it," he said.

  • WHAT HERCULEZ GOMEZ SAID

The former MLS forward touched upon the fact that despite there being some issues with their futures, the Canadian players are still at the Gold Cup camp. He used star striker Jonathan David as an example as he left his club team Lille, and is currently a free-agent searching for his next move.

“Jonathan David is the middle of the most important transfer of his life, he doesn’t know where he’s going to go….he has no idea, but he’s at this camp,” Gomez further added. “If Alphonso Davies was fit enough, he would be at this camp and that’s the mentality they have, because that’s the mentality the coach has….Jesse Marsch, and you can see it in those words, you've got to have humility here, and you gotta come to work. This is a team that’s a dangerous team and will be a dangerous team in this competition [Gold Cup].”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The comments come at a critical juncture for both nations as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, which they will co-host with Mexico. While the United States continues to struggle with consistent player availability and establishing a clear identity under Mauricio Pochettino, Canada has shown notable improvement since Marsch's appointment. That includes a third-place finish at the Nations League, beating the USMNT in the process in the third-place playoff.

With the U.S. losing their first pre-Gold Cup friendly, Marsch's comments only compound the pressure Pochettino faces.

    WHAT’S NEXT?

Both national teams will continue their preparations for the 2025 Gold Cup, with Canada set to face the Ivory Coast on June 10 after a 4-2 win over Ukraine on June 7. The USMNT will prepare for their friendly against Switzerland on the same date after a 2-1 loss to Turkey on June 7.

"Skilful" 25 y/o Leeds ace could leave amid interest from various "parties"

A “skilful” Leeds United player’s time at Elland Road could come to an end this summer, with “interested parties” emerging to snap him up.

Farke future in doubt ahead of busy summer at Leeds

The Whites are still basking in the glory of sealing promotion from the Championship to the Premier League earlier this week after their 6-0 win at home to Stoke City, followed by Burnley beating Sheffield United at Turf Moor.

It’s now a case of trying to be crowned champions ahead of the Clarets in the final two matches of the season, amid ongoing doubts over Daniel Farke’s future, despite the excellent job he is doing. In fact, Sean Dyche has already emerged as a possible replacement, should the German be relieved of his duties.

In terms of potential summer signings for Leeds, West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek has been linked with a move to the club, with the Czech reportedly open to the idea of sealing a switch to Elland Road.

The Whites are also said to be keen on signing Ipswich Town striker George Hirst, who has struggled for playing time in the Premier League this season, starting only three matches in the competition. For that reason, a fresh challenge may appeal, especially as the Tractor Boys are almost certainly heading back to the Championship.

"Skilful" Leeds player wanted by "interested parties"

According to Blick [via Sport Witness], Isaac Schmidt could leave Leeds at the end of the season, potentially not being seen as an important player upon the Whites’ return to the Premier League. The need to strengthen will make it hard for him to earn regular minutes and there are claimed to be “numerous interested parties” in the 25-year-old.

Isaac Schmidt for Leeds United.

This summer does feel like the right time for Leeds and Schmidt to part ways, even though the two-cap Switzerland international did feature in the aforementioned thumping of Stoke, playing for 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

He hasn’t started once in the Championship all season, instead coming on 12 times and playing just 71 minutes in total in the competition, so it’s hard to see his situation changing when the Whites are playing at an even higher level next season.

Schmidt’s move to Leeds simply hasn’t worked out to date, having arrived from St. Gallen later year, even though Siwzrterland manager Murat Yakin has spoken positively about him, saying: “I really liked Isaac! He was skillful, he won all his duels and he was good offensively.”

For Leeds, it’s now a case of the Whites nailing their summer transfer business, hopefully aided by plenty of funds being made available by 49ers Enterprises.

Leeds could axe Farke by hiring "the most underrated manager in the PL"

Leeds United could be set to make a huge decision over the future of Daniel Farke this summer.

A big decision needs to be made regarding Farke’s future, too, either retaining his services or hiring a replacement who has enough time to bring in the right players.

Liverpool think Kudus is better than their strikers as £10m discount opens

Liverpool are close to being crowned Premier League champions and could start the summer with aplomb if they can land one of England’s top offensive talents, per reports.

Liverpool on the verge of sealing Premier League crown

Arne Slot has become a hero among Liverpool supporters and will soon deliver the reality of becoming the first Reds team in the modern day to claim the title in front of their own supporters at Anfield. With the Premier League title race a forgone conclusion, only a point is required at home to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend to ensure fans are sent into scenes of jubilation on Merseyside.

Liverpool Manager ArneSlotcelebrates at the end of the match

Celebrations will be in order after what feels like weeks of Liverpool having to store their champagne in cold storage, but what happens when the novelty wears off and the defending champions turn their attention to next term?

Presumably, an exciting summer window will be in store, and reports suggest the Reds are already eyeing a double swoop for Bournemouth pair Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez to kick things off. Looking to pull off some ambitious deals, Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong is another Liverpool target as they plan for all scenarios, including a potential move for Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Title victories can often embolden managers to stick with the options they have to compete for further silverware later down the line. However, football is constantly evolving, so there can be no expense spared in the hunt for greatness.

Keeping that in mind, Liverpool could now sign one of the Premier League’s most renowned attacking threats for a discount, per recent developments.

Liverpool could land Mohammed Kudus for discounted price

According to Football Insider, Liverpool could land West Ham United forward Mohammed Kudus for a discount as they look for upgrades on their current attacking ranks. Despite retaining an £80 million release clause involving domestic clubs, the Ghana international could be allowed to leave the London Stadium for a fee in the region of £70 million, and the report claims the Reds are “definite” he would be an upgrade on their current forward options.

Labelled “brilliant” by Alan Shearer, Kudus has been a mainstay either on the flank or through the middle this term, registering three goals and three assists in 30 appearances across all competitions. The Hammers have endured a disappointing campaign to say the least, though the 24-year-old has also created 30 chances on league duty as his side stand on the verge of beating the drop.

Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz could be cashed in on by Liverpool to create room for Kudus, who has become one of their top targets to fill any void left by sales this summer. Undoubtedly, the former Ajax man is in need of a new challenge and Merseyside could be the best environment possible for him to continue thriving in the English top-flight.

Mashrafe calls for calm as Bangladesh face the team their fans love to hate

There might be more Indian fans at Edgbaston, but the ‘tigers’ are all set to make their presence felt

Mohammad Isam in Birmingham01-Jul-20192:00

Shakib, the MVP of the 2019 World Cup

Tuesday’s match against India is a must-win for Bangladesh as far as progressing to the World Cup semi-finals is concerned but, among its large contingent of fans, the anxiety over what could happen on the field is matched by anxiety over the loss of face should their team lose. Because it will not be just another loss – if it happens – but a loss to the one team they love to hate. The stakes are high. Ahead of the match, there is talk among Bangladeshi expatriates living in Birmingham of buying tickets at higher prices, and plans to enter the stadium in large groups so that they are not overwhelmed by the Indian support troops, who are likely to be in a majority during the game. One group is also organising a march towards Edgbaston, although they aren’t sure how many are joining them. It’s got to the point where captain Mashrafe Mortaza has had had to ask the team’s supporters to tone it down. All smiles – Mashrafe Mortaza catches up with Rohit Sharma during the warm-up match•Associated PressALSO READ: Are Bangladesh lagging behind because of a self-imposed limitation?“There will be excitement but it won’t be acceptable if it crosses the limit or someone is targeted personally,” Mashrafe told . “Social media and abuse and trolling is hard to ignore for players, no matter how hard we try to avoid them. Cricketers are also human. It affects relations between two countries and doesn’t send a great message about our country either.
“Both sides will want to win the game. Our supporters should definitely back us with all their heart but it shouldn’t become dirty. We should keep in mind that we don’t do anything to belittle our country.”Thankfully, the players appear unaffected by the hype, and from all accounts, there’s quite a bit of bonhomie between the two sets of players at the hotel they are sharing in Birmingham. Mashrafe was seen hanging out with MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya while Tamim Iqbal is said to have spent time with KL Rahul. There has never been outward hostility between the players, apart from the odd on-field sledge, and Bangladesh cricketers often talked about India as strong opponents from whom they have learned a lot.But it’s hard to ignore the past, especially in the age of social media. It stems from the persistent and long-held feeling among Bangladesh fans that they were given a raw deal – in cricketing terms – by their neighbours. Ironically, it was Jagmohan Dalmiya, the ICC president at the time, who engineered Bangladesh’s elevation to full-member status in 2000. Since then, though, India have hosted Bangladesh for just one Test match, often citing commercial reasons for not hosting them more.Bangladesh’s fans are colourful, passionate, and very emotional•Getty ImagesSo there’s the hurt, as well as a feeling that the hurt is not justified. This has been further complicated by a steady, seemingly endless, stream of abuse – sledges, threats, offensive memes, the works – from both sides, especially on social media. Four years ago, even the mainstream media joined the trolling, when a major Bangladeshi daily mocked Indian cricketers with a graphic of them being shaved by Mustafizur Rahman’s cutters. Then, during the 2017 Test in Hyderabad, a local daily alluded to the “big brother v younger brother” relationship in its headline. On the field, Bangladesh have a 5-29 win-loss record against India in ODIs, though famous victories in 2004, the 2007 World Cup, the 2012 Asia Cup and the 2015 ODI series were posts of progress.Bangladesh’s evolution as a team, particularly in the last four years in which they also beat India twice, has added to the fans’ confidence. They have built a parallel universe where it is believed that there is no clear favourite in this contest, and out meme-ing and out-trolling each other is a form of victory. On Tuesday, they have another chance to change the tone and tenor of that communication.

£50m Chelsea player in "advanced" talks to leave, could be done imminently

Chelsea need to balance their books by shipping off many unwanted players before summer deadline day on September 1, and there are many candidates for the chopping block.

Enzo Maresca and Arne Slot could go head-to-head.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 26, 2025

Enzo Maresca has already sent a clear message to certain men with his official Club World Cup squad, which notably doesn’t include some pretty big names.

Lesley Ugochukwu, João Félix, Renato Veiga, Ben Chilwell, David Datro Fofana, Armando Broja and Axel Disasi all missed out on a place in Chelsea’s ranks for the CWC, with loanee Carney Chukuwuemeka actually permitted to feature for Borussia Dortmund at the tournament.

All the aforementioned players are very much on Chelsea’s ‘for sale’ list (The Athletic), while the likes of Noni Madueke, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku have also been linked with Stamford Bridge exits recently.

Arsenal hold an interest in signing Madueke, and are seriously considering the possibility of adding yet another ex-Chelsea player to their ranks almost immediately after they sealed a £5 million deal for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy claim Juventus and Napoli are targeting Jackson, and the prospect of him leaving west London is a very real one.

High-earning England international Raheem Sterling is also out of Maresca’s long-term plans, and Chelsea will be very keen to trim his £325,000-per-week salary off the books, nearly three years after they signed him in a £50 million deal from Man City.

The 30-year-old is now back from an underwhelming loan spell at Arsenal, having failed to make his mark as a regular for Mikel Arteta, and it is hard to envisage any domestic club being willing to pay a significant fee for the ex-City star.

Perhaps the best solution will come from abroad, with Turkish Süper Lig giants Besiktas now registering a serious interest in Sterling and providing BlueCo with an avenue to pursue an exit deal.

Raheem Sterling in talks to join Besiktas from Chelsea

According to reports from Spain, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are now actively trying to sign the former Liverpool forward as they look to make a statement for their new manager – who signed an 18-month deal to join them in January.

Former Manchester United managerOleGunnarSolskjaer

It is believed that Bestikas are in talks for Sterling, and negotiations are at an “advanced” stage, but the fees involved in a potential move haven’t been made clear.

Nevertheless, a move could be finalised “in the coming days”, so it may be one to keep an eye on. Sterling, right now, is at a real crossroads in his career, and he’ll be considering the best move possible to give himself a chance of competing for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The jury is out on whether a move to Turkey would be the best way to elevate his England chances, but clubs in the Süper Lig may be among the only sides in world football who could realistically afford Sterling’s wages, or make an offer even close to them.

Explained: Why the Premier League is set to break from tradition and schedule only ONE fixture for Boxing Day

Only one Premier League match is likely to be staged on 26 December this season, with the beloved tradition of watching football on Boxing Day set to be all but abandoned. While the dates and times of the Christmas fixtures are still to be finalised, a new report indicates the English top flight are being forced into a difficult position over the long-standing tradition.

Boxing Day this year could see the fewest top-flight games since 1945

A new report from states that the ritual of watching football on Boxing Day is under threat this season. The report indicates that with 26 December falling on a Friday this year, nine matches are likely to be delayed until the weekend (Saturday, 27 December and Sunday, 28 December) and also the following Monday (29 December). Should this be the case, it would mean the fewest top-flight games on Boxing Day since the Second World War.

Only three top-flight matches were held in 1993, when Boxing Day fell on a Sunday that year, while there were just two in 1981 – the lowest number since the end of the war in 1945. However, all ten Premier League fixtures took place when 26 December last fell on a Friday, in 2014.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportPL being forced into difficult position due to existing broadcast contracts

The report says that there may only be one Premier League fixture on Boxing Day this year due to broadcast contracts. While the dates and times for the fixtures are still yet to be finalised, Premier League officials have reportedly been forced into the difficult position because broadcast contracts require them to play on 33 weekends every season, with only five rounds of midweek fixtures.

The Premier League are believed to be in need of both Saturday, 27 December and Sunday, 28 December to fulfil its contractual obligations, due to the expansion of UEFA’s European competitions and the FA Cup now occupying more weekends – a consequence of the decision to scrap replays.

English Football League and National League will uphold beloved tradition

The reports concludes by saying clubs and broadcasters typically expect to be notified of agreed fixture dates at least six weeks in advance, with matches up to 20 December confirmed thus far. The identity of the fixture to be staged on Boxing Day is yet to be determined, with the contentious issue still being debated.

While the Premier League is poised to go in a different direction this year, both the English Football League (EFL) and the National League will uphold the tradition, with all of their games still scheduled for Boxing Day. There will then be another round of EFL matches on Monday, 29 December, while the majority of Premier League teams will return to action for another set of games from Tuesday, 30 December.

AFPOnly four teams were not involved on Boxing Day in the 2024-25 season

In 2024-25, there were only four Premier League teams who were not in action on Boxing Day, with the matches between Brighton and Brentford and Arsenal and Ipswich Town being held on 27 December instead.
