Northern Diamonds' title defence ends with defeat to Sunrisers in rain-hit thriller

Jo Gardner, Flo Miller share unbroken 49-run stand to set up Sunrisers’ fourth straight win

ECB Reporters Network16-Sep-2023The Northern Diamonds’ title defence in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy is over – their fate sealed during a thrilling final-day group defeat against Sunrisers at Durham. The Diamonds needed to beat the Sunrisers – also eliminated today – at the Seat Unique Riverside to have any chance of progression for the knockout stages next week. But other results also needed to go their way, which they didn’t and were confirmed as the Diamonds were about to start their defence of a revised target of 126 in 18 overs, which came down to the visitors needing 10 off the last over. The Diamonds made 114 for 6 in 18 overs after play was delayed until 2pm and further interrupted. Bess Heath top-scored for the hosts with a quick-fire 37 off 21 balls two days after making her senior England debut, while new-ball seamer Eva Gray impressed with 2 for 24.Sunrisers, who needed a bonus victory amidst a host of other things to go their way to finish in the top three places, then hunted down their Duckworth Lewis Stern target for the loss of four wickets with three balls to spare.Fifth-wicket pair Jo Gardner and Flo Miller were their heroes, sharing an unbroken 49. Gardner finished 30 not out off 21 balls and Miller 20 off 16 as Sunrisers won their fourth successive game. After visiting captain Grace Scrivens elected to bowl, Gray bowled key duo Lauren Winfield-Hill and Hollie Armitage with two beautiful nip-backers, leaving Diamonds at 26 for 2 in the fifth over. The one which bowled Winfield-Hill for 1 uprooted leg-stump and the one which removed captain Armitage for 13 flattened off.The Diamonds, led by Netherlands international opener Sterre Kalis, did pretty well to steady the ship in tricky conditions – a grey sky, floodlights on and definite nip off the pitch. They reached 47 for 2 after 10 overs, with Kalis pulling a couple of crisp boundaries in 28.Unfortunately for her, she fell in the 11th when Kelly Castle took a stunning one-handed catch peddling back from mid-off to help leg-spinner Jodi Grewcock strike – 51 for 3.Heath then came in and showed significant intent and went on to hit three fours and a six – the latter over midwicket. She hammered Grewcock down the ground for her first boundary, and it seemed as if she was trying to up the rate for the Diamonds with the rain having returned.Umpires Hasan Adnan and Gabi Brown called for the covers to return just after 3pm, with the Diamonds 68 for 3 after 13 overs.Play resumed at 4.20pm, with the Diamonds batting for five more overs. Heath hit her for six but was one of three batters who holed out as Castle, Mady Villiers and Scrivens all struck.On-loan seamer Sophia Turner then bowled an attacking Scrivens for 11, leaving Sunrisers at 20 for 1 in the fourth over of their chase.Sunrisers steadied and kept in touch, as opener Ariana Dowse – a centurion earlier this week in victory over Blaze – made her way to 27.But she fell as one of two wickets in three balls to seamers Grace Hall and Phoebe Turner as the score fell to 60 for 3 in the 11th over.Dowse miscued Hall into the covers and Villiers found deep square-leg off Turner. It felt a big moment, but not so. Hall struck again when she bowled Amara Carr for 29, leaving the score at 77 for 4 in the 13th over.Sunrisers kept in touch thanks to some clean hitting, chiefly from Gardner, who hoisted Hall for six over long-on in the penultimate over. The game was then sealed by a Lizzie Scott wide. The Diamonds failing to qualify for the knockout stages means next Sunday’s final at Northampton will be the first time in four years that this competition’s showpiece will be contested by somebody else but the Diamonds and the Southern Vipers. The latter have qualified, though. The Diamonds suffered their seventh defeat, while the Sunrisers won for the sixth time in this competition. They hadn’t won a 50-over in three seasons prior to 2023, so progression for them is obvious.

Rodrygo to go, Trent-Alexander Arnold arrives – but how should Real Madrid line up under Xabi Alonso if Carlo Ancelotti departs?

Los Blancos are expected to make a change in the dugout this summer, but the new manager won't have an easy time fitting the pieces together

Real Madrid could be in trouble. Things aren't going well at the Santiago Bernabeu at the moment, and there is a real fear that they could finish the 2024-25 campaign without a trophy. That would be an immense failure for a club that brought in Kylian Mbappe last summer.

But there is reason to believe that some of this had been coming. Madrid were carried hard by Jude Bellingham at the end of 2023, and buoyed by Vinicius Jr in early 2024. And, crucially, Toni Kroos was there throughout it all, his metronomic pinging of the ball keeping Los Blancos afloat. None of that matters now, of course. Madrid are bad at football. Changes have to be made.

The ensuing moves are already underway. Carlo Ancelotti is already reportedly on his way out, with the Brazil job potentially beckoning. In turn, it seems that Xabi Alonso – long linked with the job – will come in – and he will have a serious task on his hands. Not only will be face the immense scrutiny of expectant fans, he will also be handed an awkwardly-assembled squad, with tons of talent and glaring holes.

Although Alonso has proved himself as a shrewd tactician with Bayer Leverkusen, this is by no means an easy assignment in just his second senior job in professional management. GOAL looks at the ways in which Alonso could set up his Real Madrid side…

    The obligatory transfer moves

Since we're playing Football Manager here, three things need to be established; the first is the easy assumption that Trent Alexander-Arnold does indeed arrive from Liverpool on a free transfer. That seems to have been sorted for some time now – his puzzled expression after Liverpool won the league at Anfield last week notwithstanding. It seems likely that, given the strength of Dani Carvajal at right-back – and the new contract offered to him – that Alexander-Arnold will be slotted into midfield (a frightening prospect for those who watched that woeful experiment for England at Euro 2024).

The second is the less likely but equally sensible guess that Rodrygo departs. His name has cropped up in transfer talk more frequently of late, and it is becoming increasingly clear that he is never going to be able to play in his preferred left-wing position if he is to stay in Madrid.

And the third – which is much more far-fetched than either of the previous two – is the likelihood of everyone here staying fit and healthy. Madrid have been hit hard by injuries this season, and at the time of writing have just one fit natural centre-back in Raul Asencio. All of the nerdy stuff that follows assumes that Carvajal is fit enough to play right-back, and Eder Militao recovers in time in central defence.

    Traditional 4-4-2

Carlo Ancelotti claimed a few weeks ago that a 4-4-2 was the best system for Madrid. It felt quite a lot like an act of desperation; Los Blancos were trying to attack too much. They have two very quick forwards in Vinicius and Mbappe, an imperfect right-midfielder in Rodrygo, and Bellingham could, sure, play off the left.

Alonso, should Alexander-Arnold arrive, could make this one a bit more interesting – but also compromise in some other areas. It would certainly allow for both Carvajal and Alexander-Arnold to get into the team – something that could get complicated otherwise. But it would also sacrifice the attacking nous of Bellingham, and also give up some tempo-setting quality in midfield. A four-man midfield of Alexander-Arnold, Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Bellingham, with Mbappe and Vinicius up front, is an enticing thing that might just work, and with Carvajal offering cover at right-back, should be resolute enough defensively.

    Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, Ferland Mendy

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, Jude Bellingham

    Forwards: Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe

    Leverkusen-esque 3-4-2-1

The temptation here might be for Alonso to stick with what he knows. There is a real danger in coming to a new club and immediately trying to instate a slightly unorthodox system (just ask Ruben Amorim). Alonso's most effective formation to date is a 3-4-2-1, with two very attacking wing-backs, and dual 10s who play in behind a bigger centre-forward. Look at Madrid's squad, and there's room for optimism, but also many ways in which this simply would not work.

For a start, it would seem to be Alexander-Arnold's dream – removing his defensive responsibilities and asking him to create from wide areas. It would also, presumably, suit Bellingham, who could tuck in nicely as one of the No.10s. Outside of that, things look trickier. Mbappe could play as the No.9, but Alonso likes his big man to be more static and reliable in holding up the ball. Vinicius, too, could be something of a mixed bag here, his attacking skills valuable when the game opens up but not quite as effective in tight spaces.

There are concerns, too, at the back. Madrid have struggled for centre-backs this season due to a sheer volume of injuries. Such a system would require a few medical miracles as well as some new signings. Left-wing-back is also an issue. Ferland Mendy would seem too defensive for the position, while Fran Garcia might be too attacking. Perhaps Swiss Army Knife Camavinga could do a job? In short: interesting, but not immediately effective.

    Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger

Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga

Attacking midfielders: Vinicius Jr, Jude Bellingham

    Forward: Kylian Mbappe

    Tika-taka regen 4-3-3

This is the fun one – the high-risk, high-reward setup that could either be a dream or a total nightmare. First of all, it's probably where the purest football comes into play; a three-man midfield of Alexander-Arnold, Valverde and Bellingham would be defensive suicide. But when executed well, it's not hard to see Los Blancos exerting full control over their opponent. It would also, presumably, offer a chance for Endrick to get a real look, while giving more space for Mbappe and Vinicius to play together. Should Alonso opt for a sturdier defence, he could play Valverde at right-wing – as he did in the 2021-22 campaign – and drop Tchouameni or Camavinga into midfield.

Either way, this setup doesn't scream of defensive solidity but would certainly offer the sort of tempo-setting from central midfield that Los Blancos haven't had since Kroos left. Just pray the game doesn't open up…

    Goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois

Defenders: Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, Ferland Mendy

Midfielders: Federico Valverde, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jude Bellingham

Forwards: Endrick, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr

Man Utd make verbal contract offer to "monster" with £62m release clause

da marjack bet: Manchester United have now made contact to offer a big salary to a “monster” forward in the summer, according to a new report.

Amorim reacts to Man Utd defeat at Spurs

da wazamba: The Red Devils were unable to overcome a 13th-minute goal from James Maddison on Sunday afternoon, as they were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur. It was another frustrating and bitterly disappointing day for United and Ruben Amorim, who said his job “is so hard” as he deals with an out-of-form squad and an injury list that now has 12 players on it.

“I have a lot of problems,” Amorim told Sky Sports, via BBC Sport. “My job is so hard, but I am here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs, and I will try to win again.”

The former Sporting boss went on to add that he is not worried about himself, he is focusing on his players and improving the team: “I am not worried. I understand our fans and what the media think about it. I hate to lose; that feeling is the worst.

“The rest I am not thinking about. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation and my job; I am confident on my work, and I just want to win games. The place in the table is my worry – I am not worried about me.”

Man Utd offer contract to Victor Osimhen

One aspect that continues to let United down week in and week out is lack of goals in the team, but that is something that INEOS are looking to address. According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, relayed by Caught Offside, Man United have tabled a verbal contract offer to Victor Osimhen, as they look to sign him in the summer from Napoli.

Victor Osimhen celebrates for Victor Osimhen.

The Nigeria international looks set to leave the Italian side this summer on a permanent basis after his season-long loan spell at Galatasaray. As well as United offering a contract, Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the forward and have offered Osimhen a similar deal.

Both clubs are ready to trigger his €75 million release clause, which is roughly £62 million, but at this stage Osimhen hasn’t given an answer to either to press ahead and speak to his club.

The 26-year-old was linked with a move to Chelsea or Saudi Arabia back in the summer, but a deal didn’t work out, and instead of being frozen out by Napoli, Osimhen decided to join Galatasaray on loan. The forward, who has been described as a “monster” by data analyst Ben Mattinson, has scored 12 goals in 17 Süper Lig games as well as being on form in the Europa League.

For United, signing a new striker in the summer must be a top priority for Amorim and INEOS. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both struggled to make an impact in front of goal, and, given Hojlund has not scored in the Premier League for over 10 games now, he is someone who the Red Devils could look to cash in on so they can bring in a player like Osimhen.

United need to move players on in the summer to raise funds, and despite his struggles, Hojlund could be someone who brings in a decent amount of money, given his age, and that could help United pay the £62 million release clause of Osimhen.

De Klerk puts on a big show to script series win for South Africa

Masabata Klaas, Ayabonga Khaka, Tazmin Brits, Lara Goodall and Marizanne Kapp play key hands as South Africa win with lots to spare

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Sep-2023

Nadine de Klerk made all the difference with her medium pace•PCB

They might have swept the T20I series, but Pakistan are finding the ODIs a tougher nut to crack, conceding the series at the first time of asking, losing the second game by six wickets to fall 2-0 behind. The star of the show for South Africa on Monday was Nadine de Klerk, who first returned 4 for 32, and then hit a 30-ball 24 not out as South Africa chased down the modest 169-run target in 34 overs. She wasn’t the only star performer for South Africa on the day, though. When they bowled, after Pakistan opted to bat on winning the toss, Masabata Klaas and Ayabonga Khaka contributed with wickets, three and two respectively. And Tazmin Brits, Lara Goodall and Marizanne Kapp chipped in with the bat in the chase. But de Klerk stood out. She picked up the first three Pakistan wickets to fall, inside her first two overs. The medium pacer struck with her first two deliveries, in the eighth over, getting both Muneeba Ali and Sadaf Shamas caught behind by wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta. First ball of her next over, she found a way through Sidra Ameen’s defences to hit the stumps.Pakistan were 20 for 3 in 9.1 overs at that stage, and Klaas and Khaka got their first wickets not long after, reducing Pakistan to 49 for 6 in the 18th over. There was a fightback.Aliya Riaz, who had walked out at No. 5, and Fatima Sana, the No. 8 batter, took the fight to the South Africans. They stitched together a stand of 114 for the seventh wicket, Riaz scoring 53 in 86 balls, with three fours, and Sana hitting 69 in 87 balls, with ten fours, to give Pakistan something to work with. But, again, once they were separated, the end came early, with de Klerk, who had returned 3 for 23 in the first game, picking up her fourth wicket when she sent back Umm-e-Hani.It didn’t seem like a lot of runs. Almost exactly what Pakistan had scored in the first game (165) when responding to South Africa’s 292 for 4, and South Africa put up a similarly strong performance with the bat in their chase on this occasion.Captain Laura Wolvaardt didn’t last long, falling to Sadia Iqbal after scoring 13 in an opening stand of 41 with Brits. But Brits (45 in 54 balls) and Goodall (36 in 53) got the chase on track with a 40-run stand for the second wicket. It was fairly straightforward for South Africa after that, and though Sune Luus fell for 10, Kapp’s 29 not out in 28 balls and de Klerk got the job done with lots to spare. The third game will be played in Karachi, the same as the first two, on Thursday.

Gareth Roderick thwarts Derbyshire push for first win of campaign

Centurion Gareth Roderick and Ed Pollock batted through sizeable chunks of the final day to thwart Derbyshire’s push for their first LV=Insurance County Championship victory of the campaign at New Road.Roderick battled away for five-and-a-quarter hours to make 123 in only his second match since being promoted to open the innings alongside Jake Libby.Pollock played an out of character knock based on determined defence rather than his free-flowing stroke play to make 56 off 189 balls spanning nearly four hours.Their efforts were largely responsible for defying the Derbyshire attack and only four wickets fell in the entire day.Roderick has batted predominantly in the middle order since establishing himself in the keeper-batter role last summer in contrast to his eight seasons with Gloucestershire in the upper echelons of the order. But he was moved up to number three for the home game against Leicestershire and a second innings knock of 59 spanning five hours helped seal victory on a difficult pitch. He then opened in the last Championship match against Sussex at Hove and had featured in three half-century partnerships with Libby before this marathon knock.Roderick had spoken of his need to turn promising starts into major contributions and this was a top quality effort mixing aggression with stubborn defence.Pollock has dropped down into the middle-order in Championship and T20 cricket after a shortage of runs. But here he got his head down from ball one in support of Roderick and blunted the Derbyshire attack. It took him 120 balls before he sliced Leus du Plooy down to third man for his first boundary but eating up time and deliveries was the prime consideration.Derbyshire’s winless run was extended to 10 games but they can take great heart from a performance achieved without their front line attack of Saranga Lakmal, Sam Conners and Zak Chappell while Ben Aitchison was unable to bowl in the second innings because of injury.Worcestershire reached 105 for 1 on the opening day but were then second best for the remainder of the game until the defiance by Roderick and Pollock on the final day.Derbyshire showed more discipline with the ball and greater application with the bat in the first innings.Three of their batters, du Plooy, Wayne Madsen and Anuj Dal, all reached three figures and they achieved their highest ever score against Worcestershire. The home side will reflect on poor bowling performance, with the exception of evergreen Joe Leach, and slipshod fielding and Madsen, du Plooy and Dal were all survived dropped catches.Worcestershire resumed on 70 for 2 against a Derbyshire attack which was a bowler light after Ben Aitchison had suffered hip and back problems earlier in the game.Roderick was full of attacking intent and clipped the first delivery of the day from Conor McKerr through mid wicket for four. The keeper-batter completed a 69-ball half-century with a similar shot at Anuj Dal’s expense for his eighth boundary.Debutant Rehaan Edavalath scrapped away for 62 balls but after making 15 he drove hard at Nick Potts and nicked to Wayne Madsen who held onto a low chance at first slip.Roderick continued to score freely but Adam Hose managed only a single before he attempted to drive spinner Alex Thomson and was bowled through the gate.Pollock survived a confident appeal when on two for a legside catch by keeper Brooke Guest off Luis Reece.Roderick swept Thomson for four to move into the 90s and then his 16th boundary – a steer to third man off Reece – took him to an excellent hundred from 155 balls.Pollock played an innings out of character with his free-flowing style and scored only five runs from the first 100 balls he faced. But it was an invaluable effort in the context of Worcestershire attempting to thwart Derbyshire’s victory push.Derbyshire rotated their bowlers and set unorthodox and imaginative fielders in an attempt to make a decisive breakthrough. They finally had something to celebrate after the Roderick-Pollock stand of 63 had spanned 38 overs when the latter on 123 pushed forward to Thomson and was caught at short leg.But Matthew Waite (17 not out from 97 balls) also proved a stubborn line of defence after joining Pollock in the middle.Pollock gradually accelerated and, after eight overs were lost to rain, drove Dal through the covers to for his 10th four to reach his half century from 181 balls. But he played a shot out of keeping with the remainder of his innings on 56 when he aimed a leg side blow at Reece and was caught by Dal over his shoulder running back to cover

2025 Champions Trophy qualification at stake during ODI World Cup

The top seven sides at the ODI World Cup along with hosts Pakistan will compete in the eight-team event

The top seven sides at the end of the league stage of the ongoing ODI World Cup in India will qualify for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, along with hosts Pakistan, to compete in the eight-team event. An ICC spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the qualification system for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved by the ICC Board in 2021, when the competition was brought back as one of the eight men’s global tournaments to be held in the 2024-31 cycle. The development has come as a surprise to a few boards – both whose teams are in India as well as others who missed making it to the ODI World Cup – who told ESPNcricinfo that they were unaware about qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy being at stake in this tournament. At present, Bangladesh and England are at No. 9 and 10 on the ODI World Cup points table, and therefore outside the top seven who will qualify for the Champions Trophy along with hosts Pakistan. “Yeah, I’m aware of that,” England captain Jos Buttler said when asked if he knew a place in the Champions Trophy was at stake following their loss to India in Lucknow. “And absolutely, it just proves we’ve still got lots to play for.”This also means other Full-Member nations like West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland will not even have the opportunity to qualify for the tournament, by virtue of not having made it to the 2023 ODI World Cup.In November 2021, the ICC had unveiled several global events for both men and women in the new cycle (2024-31) including two editions of the Champions Trophy – in 2025 and 2029. In a media statement, the ICC had said that the Champions Trophy would be an eight-team event and the tournament structure “will follow previous editions with two groups of four, semi-finals and final”.For the 2013 and 2017 editions of the Champions Trophy, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings at a cut-off date qualified for the event. It is understood that the decision to have the top seven teams at this World Cup qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy was approved originally by the ICC’s chief executives committee following which the ICC board ratified the recommendation. One Full Member board confirmed that the qualification pathways for all the events were discussed and approved at the 2021 ICC meetings. For the 2027 men’s ODI World Cup, which will be a 14-team tournament co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the qualification process is: the two Full Member hosts – South Africa and Zimbabwe – plus eight highest-ranked teams as of March 31, 2027, and four remaining teams through global qualifier tournaments. The qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy was highlighted this week by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan more than once. With his team almost out of the semi-final race in the ODI World Cup, Shakib spoke of the importance of finishing in the top eight. “I mean, not the semi-final hope. It is not a semi-final possibility,” Shakib said on Saturday, after Bangladesh were beaten by Netherlands. “At least, do a little better. Suppose, you have to be in the [top] ranking 8 if you want to play in the Champions Trophy. So, there are still three matches left considering that in mind.”

Buttler wants to lead England in the tour of Caribbean

England captain “very frustrated” with his own form after averaging 13.87 at World Cup

Matt Roller08-Nov-2023Jos Buttler will tell Rob Key this week that he wants to continue in his role as England’s captain in both ODI and T20I cricket, starting with their tour to the Caribbean in December.Buttler’s England side ended a five-match losing streak on Wednesday evening when they beat Netherlands by 160 runs in Pune, a result which leaves them seventh in the World Cup’s group stage heading into the final round of fixtures. The margin of victory was enough for England to move from the foot of the table, leapfrogging the Netherlands, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on Net Run Rate (NRR). They may now qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy even if they are beaten by Pakistan at Eden Gardens on Sunday, an outcome which would alleviate the pressure on both Buttler and coach Matthew Mott.Related

Key, England’s managing director of men’s cricket, spent two weeks with the team earlier in the tournament and has now returned to India. He will meet with both Buttler and Mott in Kolkata, where selection for three ODIs and five T20Is against West Indies next month will be on the agenda.Buttler has been unable to pin down the causes of England’s struggles at this World Cup and has taken significant responsibility himself, having endured an abject tournament with the bat. He has managed 111 runs at an average of just 13.87 in eight innings, a sequence extended on Wednesday by a tame chip to mid-off for 5 off 11 balls. But he confirmed his intention to continue as captain in both white-ball formats after England’s win. “I’d like to [lead in the Caribbean],” Buttler said. “I know Rob Key arrives in India today. We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone, and make a plan for that tour. But yeah, I’d like to.”Buttler conceded that he was “very frustrated” with his own form. “You want to lead from the front and do that in your own performance,” he said. “I’ll stick to the stuff that’s served me well over a long period of time when I’ve had these little runs of form and hopefully I’ll come out the other side of it very soon.”England are likely to make several changes to their ODI side for the Caribbean tour. Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed are among the young players expected to feature in a squad that will bear close resemblance to the one that beat Ireland 1-0 in late September. The T20I squad will be stronger, with England only due to play four further matches in the format before the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the US next June, where they will attempt to defend the title that they won – under Buttler and Mott’s leadership – in Australia last year.Eoin Morgan, Buttler’s predecessor, described England as “a sinking ship” on Wednesday afternoon but Buttler insisted that the squad have “stayed really close”. He said: “If you watched training yesterday, the guys probably trained as hard as they have trained all trip, which shows the level of commitment and desire to put things right.”It would be easy for us to tail off… credit to everyone for still putting [effort] in and showing how much it means to play for England and the pride in our performance. Of course, the Champions Trophy is something we’re very focused on and determined to make sure we’re there.”

Visitantes assustam primeiro, mandantes tentam responder

O jogo, no entanto, acabou ficando no empate e decepcionando quase 40 mil palmeirenses.

E agora?
