Their own Haaland: Wilcox plotting big Man Utd move for "remarkable" £44m CF

da 888casino: Manchester United’s need for a new striker this summer is there for all to see, with their dismal record in front of goal massively contributing to their lowly Premier League finish this season.

da jogodeouro: Rasmus Hojlund was Ruben Amorim’s number one option in such a department throughout 2024/25, scoring just four times in the league throughout his 32 appearances.

Such a tally saw him find the net every eight games, proving that he’s not at the level required if the Red Devils are to rise back up the table in 2025/26.

Rasmus Hojlund

He’s since been massively touted with a return to Italy, with Inter Milan and Napoli the two sides vying for his signature, but it’s likely the club would lose a whole heap on their £72m investment.

Any funds raised from a potential sale will hand Amorim the needed money to reinvest into the first team squad, to further bolster his ranks if he’s to be successful at Old Trafford.

The latest on United’s pursuit for a new striker this summer

Hugo Ekitiké has been the main option on United’s shortlist over the last couple of weeks, even holding talks with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt over a move for the Frenchman, who netted 22 goals this season.

Dušan Vlahović has also emerged as a surprise target, with the Serbian international wanting a Premier League move this summer, but his hefty wage demands could prove to be a stumbling block.

Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike

As a result, the Red Devils have turned their attention elsewhere, plotting a big-money move to sign Fiorentina striker Moise Kean, according to Corriere Fiorentina via Sport Witness.

The report claims that the club are closely monitoring the Italian’s progress and could make a move during the off-season if they fail to land other key targets.

It also states that the 25-year-old currently has a £44m release clause in his deal with the Serie A outfit, a potential bargain given his record of 25 goals in 44 outings this campaign.

Why United’s £44m target could be Amorim’s own Haaland

Most teams around the world must wish they had a talent as big as Erling Haaland, with the Norwegian forward a constant threat to countless backlines.

Manchester City's ErlingHaalandcelebrates scoring their first goal

The 24-year-old has demonstrated his clinical edge during his time at Manchester City, netting a staggering 121 goals in his 142 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Such a record previously catapulted the Citizens to a famous treble back in 2022/23, emulating the success set by United during the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

He’s even set the record for the most goals scored in a single 38-game Premier League season, netting a hat-trick in the 6-3 battering at the Etihad that campaign.

However, talents like Haaland are extremely hard to come by, with many costing extortionate transfer fees and making them virtually impossible to sign.

Fiorentina'sMoiseKean

That could be about to change with the Red Devils’ potential deal for Kean, with the Italian talisman being ranked as a similar player to the City star by FBref.

He’s managed to outperform him in numerous key areas, including a better goal per shot on target record, evidently making the most of the chances that fall his way within the final third.

Kean, who’s been labelled “remarkable” by journalist Marco Messina, has also completed more passes and won more aerial battles – showcasing his all-round nature that could play a vital role in United’s build-up.

His dominance doesn’t stop there, completing more take-ons and progressive carries per 90, subsequently able to create his own opportunities without relying on players around him.

Given the prices quoted for other forwards in and around Europe this summer, a deal for Kean could prove to be an excellent one, handing Amorim the ammunition he desperately needs.

If he can replicate Haaland’s success in England’s top flight, it would be one of the signings of the window, offering the side a clinical option that could transform their ambitions of rising up the table in 2025/26.

He'd be perfect for Bruno: Man Utd set to hold talks for "incredible" star

Manchester United could be about to land a star who could take Bruno Fernandes to the next level.

WPL, Hundred, WBBL given separate windows in new women's FTP

The ICC Women’s Championship has expanded to 11 teams with Zimbabwe’s inclusion, and a new T20 Champions Trophy has been introduced

Shashank Kishore04-Nov-2024

The WPL will move to a new window from 2026•BCCI

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be played in January-February from 2026, while the Hundred (August) and WBBL (November) have been allotted dedicated windows in the new women’s Future Tours Programme for the 2025-29 cycle. The BCCI moving the WPL has resulted in Cricket Australia pushing back its women’s marquee summer fixtures from mid-January to February-March to avoid a clash with the most lucrative women’s franchise league. The 2024-25 women’s Ashes, which begins on January 12, will be the last international matches Australia will host in January until 2029. The first of Australia’s marquee home series in their new window is a tour by India for one Test, three ODIs, and three T20Is after the WPL in January-February 2026.The ICC Women’s ODI Championship has been expanded to 11 teams in the new FTP with the addition of Zimbabwe. This follows the addition of Bangladesh and Ireland to the ongoing cycle that will culminate with next year’s ODI World Cup in India in October. Zimbabwe’s inclusion means all of ICC’s Full Members except Afghanistan, who don’t field a women’s team, are part of the championship. With the expansion of the Women’s Championship, each country will play four teams at home and four away over a three-year cycle. In their maiden appearance in the upcoming cycle, Zimbabwe will host South Africa, West Indies, Ireland and Sri Lanka and will tour India, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Pakistan. As expected, India and Pakistan will only play each other in world tournaments in the new FTP, and not in bilateral series.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

In another addition that has been largely members-driven, teams have scheduled tri-series as part of their preparation for ICC events during this cycle.”Ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, England will host India and New Zealand for such a three-team T20I tournament while Ireland will host Pakistan and the West Indies,” ICC general manager Wasim Khan said. “Sri Lanka and the West Indies are among other Members scheduled to host tri-series, in 2027 and 2028, respectively.”A T20 Champions Trophy for womenThe ICC has introduced a T20 Champions Trophy – to be held in Sri Lanka in 2027 – as part of its strategic plan to have at least one women’s global tournament each year. This new tournament will feature six teams and will comprise 16 matches. The addition of this tournament to the women’s calendar means there will be three global events – including the LA Olympics (August 2028) and T20 World Cup (September 2028) – over a 12-month period. This takes the count of all ICC senior women’s events in the new FTP cycle to five: two T20 World Cups (2026 and 2028), two ODI World Cups (2025 and 2029), and a T20 Champions Trophy in 2027.The ODI World Cup will have 10 teams playing 48 matches from 2029 (up from eight teams, and 31 matches, till 2025), the T20 World Cup will be expanded to 12 teams playing 33 matches from 2026 (up from 10 teams and 23 matches till 2024).Women’s FTP – Test cricket•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

West Indies to play Tests after 20 yearsA total of 15 women’s Tests have been included in this cycle, with West Indies set to return to the format after more than 20 years. They host Australia for one Test as part of a multi-format series in March 2026, play England in another at home in April 2027, and will play a Test in South Africa in December 2028.West Indies last played a Test in 2003-04, against Pakistan, and have only played 12 women’s Tests in all. India, meanwhile, will play Australia and South Africa in away Tests in 2026, while also hosting Australia and England later in the cycle.Having toured Australia for what was only their second women’s Test in nearly a decade, South Africa will host Australia for a Test for the first time in March-April 2027. The new FTP concludes in 2029 with the ODI World Cup, the venue for which is yet to be announced.

Raid Aston Villa for Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins, plug midfield hole & six moves Man Utd still need to make in the transfer window after finally sealing Bryan Mbeumo signing

Ruben Amorim will be facing an impossible task in 2025-26 if the Red Devils don't speed up their summer recruitment drive

Manchester United needed to completely overhaul Ruben Amorim's squad after the worst season in the club's modern history. That much was obvious after the Red Devils followed up their 15th-placed finish in the Premier League with a dreadful 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final, which saw them miss out on European qualification for the first time in a decade.

But here we are, less than four weeks away from United's blockbuster 2025-26 season opener against Arsenal, and only three new faces have arrived at Old Trafford: former Wolves star Matheus Cunha, teenage full-back Diego Leon and, after finally completing his long-awaited £71 million ($96m) switch from Brentford on Monday, Bryan Mbeumo.

That trio, however, won't cover more than just the foundations of Amorim's rebuild. The Portuguese coach couldn't hide his frustration after seeing his disjointed team held to a 0-0 draw by Leeds in their first pre-season friendly on Saturday, as he admitted to : "We have a lot to improve, the speed of the game, all of the details. We need to improve." That simply cannot happen if Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS do not grant him the tools.

Cunha and Mbeumo will both add much-needed quality in the final third, but there is so much more work to be done if the Red Devils are to start climbing back towards the top. Below, GOAL runs through the six moves United still need to make before the summer window slams shut, beginning with a raid on Aston Villa…

    Go all out for Watkins

United's biggest problem under Amorim has been a lack of goals. They were outscored by all but four Premier League teams last term, and posted a shot conversion rate of just 12.3 percent, the second-lowest behind relegated Southampton.

Cunha and Mbeumo should both help to boost that number, but United also need a ruthless No.9 to complete their new-look attack. The confidence-stricken Rasmus Hojlund is just not up to it, and United are clearly aware of that, with reporting that they have drawn up a shortlist of replacements.

Viktor Gyokeres was on that list, having previously worked with Amorim at Sporting CP, but Arsenal are now on the verge of prising him away from the Portuguese champions. United have instead turned to Ollie Watkins, making initial inquiries with Aston Villa officials to explore the possibility of a deal for the England international, who is likely to set INEOS back another £60m ($81m).

That would be a small price to pay for something United have been missing since Robin van Persie's departure: a Premier League-proven No.9. Watkins has scored 75 goals in 185 league games for Villa to date, and only Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland among central strikers bettered his haul of 24 goal contributions across the 2024-25 campaign.

In addition to being an expert at getting in behind defences, Watkins is a deadly finisher with both feet and provides a genuine threat in the air. The 29-year-old has evolved into a superb all-round centre-forward under Unai Emery, and would finally give United the clinical edge needed to get over the line in tight games.

    Ditch Onana for Martinez

United are not quite so hopeless defensively, but there is always a risk of implosion because of Andre Onana's presence between the sticks. Former United midfielder Nemanja Matic infamously called the Cameroonian "one of the worst goalkeepers" in the club's history, but that may not be harsh enough; none of his predecessors cost the team positive results with horrendous mistakes on such a consistent basis.

Amorim will be fighting a losing battle if Onana is still the No.1 when the new season kicks off. There is a chance that may not be the case, though, after reports emerged on Monday evening that United had failed in a loan bid to sign Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Martinez is a volatile character who is also prone to committing the occasional error, but he's a far safer pair of hands than Onana. In pure shot-stopping terms, the 32-year-old is up there with the very best in the business, and he commands his box with natural authority.

The World Cup winner is also a fierce competitor who demands the highest standards from those around him. United are woefully short of leadership figures of that ilk, and it has been reported that they could land Martinez for as little as £22m ($29m) due to a release clause in his contract. As such, they should just get the deal done on a permanent basis rather than trying to save money by signing him on loan.

    Get a midfield dictator

"We have a lack of pace. Especially in the middle of the park, you can feel it's hard to bring the ball," Amorim said after the friendly draw with Leeds last week, and that will have come as no surprise to the United faithful after they saw Casemiro's name in the starting XI.

The 33-year-old hasn't been able to keep up with the pace of top level matches for a while now, and it's something of a surprise that Real Madrid legend is not being offered up to reported suitors in Saudi Arabia on a silver platter as United bid to stay on the right side of the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules. Academy jewel Kobbie Mainoo fared only marginally better after coming on at half-time as concerns over his physicality continue to linger, while fellow substitute Manuel Ugarte showed plenty of endeavour but precious little quality.

Bruno Fernandes is still by far United's best player, and he can operate in a deep-lying role, but that means his attacking talents go to waste. Amorim has to target a traditional midfield dictator who can combine the best of Mainoo and Ugarte's abilities: technical prowess and relentless energy.

That role has become so important in the modern era, and we saw it perfected by Fernandes' Portugal colleague Vitinha during Paris Saint-Germain's run to Champions League glory last season. United need their own version of the rejuvenated ex-Wolves man; a press-resistant, masterful ball carrier who controls games with his passing range and ability to find space between the lines.

One man who might fit the bill is Valencia's Javi Guerra. The Spaniard has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, and though he's far more raw than Vitinha at the age of 22, he could bring many of the same qualities to Amorim's side.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Sign a right-wing back

United's other problem position is at right-wing back, where Amad Diallo, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have all been deployed regularly by Amorim. Amad and Dalot both have plenty to offer going forward, but neither of them have strong defensive instincts, while Mazraoui is far better suited to a spot in the back three.

Until they sign a specialist to fill the role, opponents will continue to get far too much joy down the left against United. Enter, Daniel Munoz: the Crystal Palace talisman who was the driving force behind their stunning maiden FA Cup success.

It's baffling that the Red Devils have not been credited with an interest in Munoz yet, given Palace boss Oliver Glasner favours the same 3-4-3 formation as Amorim. The Colombian's incredible performance in the FA Cup final against Manchester City alone should have provided enough evidence for the Old Trafford recruitment team to launch a swoop for his services.

Munoz provided a brilliant assist for Eberechi Eze's winning goal after a lung-busting run forward and worked tirelessly to stifle the effectiveness of City trickster Jeremy Doku and promising academy star Nico O'Reilly. There are few better one-v-one defenders in the Premier League than Munoz because of his electric pace and impressive powers of anticipation, while his delivery from wide areas is also superb.

Palace tied Munoz to a contract extension until 2028 back in April, but United should at least try to test their resolve with an approach, especially after his recent comments on his future. "I want to play for the best teams in the world, but they haven't spoken to me directly," Munoz told Colombian channel earlier this month. "I dream and work every day to achieve it, and I hope it can happen as soon as possible. I hope it's in this window, but if not, I'm very happy at Crystal Palace."

Jos Buttler targeting Lancashire's T20 Blast quarter-final for injury comeback

England white-ball captain has not featured since T20 World Cup due to calf injury

Matt Roller25-Aug-2024Jos Buttler is targeting Lancashire’s T20 Blast quarter-final at Sussex for his comeback from the calf injury which ruled him out of the Hundred.Buttler, who has not played since the T20 World Cup, has been backed to continue as England’s white-ball captain by managing director Rob Key after Matthew Mott lost his job as head coach. He will work alongside interim coach Marcus Trescothick – his former Somerset team-mate – during September’s T20I and ODI series against Australia. After sustaining a calf injury while preparing for the Hundred, Buttler has returned to training and has been working with England physio Craig de Weymarn in Bristol. “Another good session in the bank,” he wrote on Instagram this week, adding in another post: “Picking up injuries as a professional sportsman is always frustrating and I was gutted to miss the Hundred this year.”

Buttler has not featured for Lancashire this year but is in contention for their quarter-final at Hove on September 4, pending a late fitness test. Jos has been doing a lot of rehab. I’ve been in contact with him and he’s very keen to play. We are happy to leave it down to the last day.”He’ll do a fitness test on the Monday, just before the game and with the England physios and everyone giving him the green light, then he’ll play. We are very keen that if he’s fit and ready to go then he’ll be playing.”Saqib Mahmood and Phil Salt were rested from Lancashire’s Championship defeat to Surrey this week but are expected to be available for the T20 quarter-final, as is Liam Livingstone. Salt missed out with “a bit of a dodgy back” and is unlikely to feature against Hampshire next week.”The four-day [competition] has been really tough for us,” Benkenstein said. “We’re still hanging in there. But the T20 was something where we didn’t think we had the best team: we were missing a lot of players and that was a real positive that we won five out of our first six games in the beginning, with a lot of guys not there.”Now we’re getting to the knockout stages, we should have our full-strength team which gives us the best chance. It is important for us. You come into a season wanting to win everything, and we’ve got a chance of winning, getting to Finals Day, and then you’re two games away. That’s what we are hoping for.”Buttler and other players named in England’s T20 squad will not be available for Finals Day on September 14, which is sandwiched between the second and third T20Is against Australia.

PSL XI – Red-hot Sohaib Maqsood, explosive Colin Munro, all-round Mohammad Nawaz, and more

More players took part in this PSL than ever before, and that made picking the team of the tournament tricky

Umar Farooq and Danyal Rasool25-Jun-2021Colin Munro (285 runs, 57.00 Avg, 169.64 SR)The Islamabad United’s top order looks a little bereft without Luke Ronchi, but fellow New Zealander Munro filled those boots impressively and seamlessly. Despite only being available for the Abu Dhabi leg of the PSL, he hit the ground running, getting United off to several explosive starts. No side scored at a higher rate in the powerplay, and while he got able support from Usman Khawaja, Munro was the primary reason for that. Two innings particularly stood out: a 36-ball 90 which saw United post the highest ever PSL powerplay score and chase down a target of 137 inside ten overs, and an unbeaten 88 off 56 to chase down 191 which sealed qualification for the playoffs.Related

A field of dreams for Sohaib Maqsood

Shahnawaz Dahani – the pace bowler with the smile

What's gone wrong for Quetta Gladiators in the last two seasons?

Mohammad Rizwan (500 runs, 45.45 Avg, 127.87 SR)Rizwan seems to get little wrong in T20 cricket these days, but he doesn’t just get into the side for the superb wicketkeeping and brilliant captaincy which led the Multan Sultans to the PSL title. His scintillating form in Karachi saw him post scores of 71, 41, 76, 43 and 66 even as the Sultans struggled to get wins on the board. But he followed up with an unbeaten 82 in Abu Dhabi which got the Sultans’ juggernaut going. His stability and consistency at the top – just once in 12 innings did he fail to reach double figures – gave the Sultans a solid platform, allowing their bigger hitters the freedom and license they craved. Not least the man who follows him in at number three, both in the Sultans team and this list..Sohaib Maqsood (428 runs, 47.55 Avg, 156.77 SR) Maqsood capped off a whirlwind season with the PSL title and a first call-up to the Pakistan side in half a decade. It came thanks in no small part to his devastating form at the top of the Sultans’ order, scoring five half-centuries in 12 innings and getting more runs in boundaries than any other player in the league. Some of the shot-making was otherworldly, smashing 59 in a momentum-changing innings against United in the qualifier, before doubling up with an unbeaten 35-ball 65 in the final that saw him named Player of the Match.ESPNcricinfo LtdShoaib Malik (354 runs, 35.40 Avg, 149.36 SR)Malik insisted he wasn’t done as an international T20I cricketer just yet, and he did his chances little harm in the yellow of Peshawar Zalmi this season. The strike rate stands out, but it was his ability to blend his more conventional anchoring role with all-out attack when necessary that truly impressed. Only three players managed more sixes than Malik’s 17 all season, and even if Zalmi ended up second, Malik’s personal season finished with 168 runs in the last four games. They included a valiant 28-ball 48 in the final and a 36 ball 68 in an insurmountable chase of 248. An unbeaten 18-ball 36 which saw him put Dale Steyn to the sword in a game in Karachi stands out, with the Zalmi chasing down 202 – the highest total run down in the league this season. It was just one of several handy innings peppered throughout the competition, meaning there always danger lurking for the opposition at the tail-end of the Zalmi innings. Perhaps the most out-of-the-box selection, the Singaporean came in to replace South Africa’s David Weise for the Abu Dhabi leg, and took the competition by storm. A priceless unbeaten 23 took the Qalandars to a last over victory on his debut, while another undefeated 64 off 36 in the game that followed rescued them from 25 for four, ensuring a ten-run win. While the wins dried up for the Qalandars thereafter, David’s contributions did not. He went on to launch an astonishing counterattack that nearly sealed a famous win against the Kings, and ended up as the Qalandars’ highest run-scorer in the second leg.Hasan Ali came in clutch for Islamabad United•Pakistan Super LeagueMohammad Nawaz (6 wickets, SR 26.00, Eco 7.50)Nawaz proved his worth this season as a spin-bowling allrounder with an ability to get his side get out of sticky situations. Wow: Nottingham Forest could now sign £100m star in Gibbs-White swap deal

Nottingham Forest could now look to sign an “unbelievable” forward as part of a swap deal for Morgan Gibbs-White, according to a report.

Gibbs-White could be heading for Nottingham Forest exit

It may have been a difficult task for Forest to keep hold of Gibbs-White even if they had secured qualification for next season’s Champions League, but having missed out on the top five, it now appears as though the midfielder could be heading for an exit.

The 25-year-old is now considered a dream signing for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, amid Martin Odegaard’s disappointing performances last season, while Manchester City are also considered frontrunners in the race for the Englishman.

The Tricky Trees are not willing to let their star player leave on the cheap, however, with the aforementioned report suggesting they could look to hold out for a fee of £100m for the maestro, who remains under contract until 2027.

A new report from Football Insider has also suggested that Nottingham Forest could agree a deal of a different nature, as they may look to sign Jack Grealish as part of a swap deal for Gibbs-White.

Having been left out of Pep Guardiola’s squad for the final game of the season, Grealish could be on his way out this summer, and a move to the City Ground is a possibility, with transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke adding: “Swap deals are notoriously hard in the Premier League, but we know Morgan Gibbs-White is a major target for Manchester City this summer.

ByEmilio Galantini May 31, 2025

“If they get an offer which is too good to turn down, Forest might have to let him move to City… to work under Pep Guardiola… you’d probably be thinking that Forest will be looking to double their investment.

“Jack Grealish potentially is a swap deal – [that] might cause unrest if Forest were to break their budget to try and get Grealish in.”

"Unbelievable" Grealish could reignite career at Forest

The England international has been lauded as “unbelievable” courtesy of his contributions for the Three Lions in the past, but he has struggled to force his way into Guardiola’s plans as of late.

As such, it would make sense if City cash-in on their £100m signing this summer, and he could be a solid signing for Forest under Nuno Espirito Santo, if he is able to rediscover his previous form, with the winger often catching the eye during his time at Villa Park.

The 29-year-old was arguably at his best during his Aston Villa days, during which time he regularly contributed goals and assists in the Premier League.

No Forest fan will want to see Gibbs-White leave this summer, and it could be a risk to sign Grealish, considering he hasn’t been a regular starter for quite some time, but his previous exploits for club and country indicate he is clearly a very talented player.

Better than Pedro: Newcastle in talks for "one of the best STs out there"

Newcastle United are confident that they will keep Alexander Isak in the squad this summer, but a new striker is being chased all the same.

Eddie Howe wants more firepower in the attacking third, with Callum Wilson ageing and out of contract, and William Osula, 21, drifting through his maiden year as a Magpie.

Well, The Telegraph understand talks with Brighton & Hove Albion are on the brink of kicking off for the transfer of Joao Pedro, who is valued at £60m and who the Seagulls are willing to sell this summer.

Newcastle open talks for sought-after star

Pedro, 23, is proven in the Premier League and has the dynamic faculties to complement Isak, rather than outright replace him. However, there may be an even bigger fish Howe could add to the Tyneside pond.

As per transfer insider Graeme Bailey, Newcastle have held talks with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, putting their name in the hat as Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all tussle for the striker’s signature.

Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike

Ekitike might be the talk of the town, but it doesn’t seem like any suitor would be willing to meet the Bundesliga club’s €100m (£85m) valuation of the 22-year-old. Saying that, the player’s entourage have informed the relevant parties that a reduced figure may yet be agreed.

Newcastle agreed an initial £26m deal to sign Ekitike when he was at Stade de Reims way back in 2022, but he rejected their interest when Paris Saint-Germain came calling.

What Hugo Ekitike would bring to Newcastle

Newcastle might have felt the force of Ekitike’s rejection in the past, but he was a teenager who had been presented with a proposal to remain in his homeland with the cream of Ligue 1’s crop.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike.

PSG didn’t work out for him, only scoring four times across 33 senior showings before being rehoused in Germany with Frankfurt, but it’s here where the striker has found his feet, with his first full campaign at the club ending with 22 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.

His displays have actually led analyst Ben Mattinson to praise him as “one of the best strikers out there.”

As far as Pedro’s concerned, Ekitike is the superior player, and if Bailey’s on the money (quite literally) with his claims that Frankfurt’s £85m demands might be slashed, putting every effort into convincing the Frenchman feels like a no-brainer.

As you can see, the two forwards are matched up rather well, but Ekitike clearly has the edge, outperforming his South American counterpart across most relevant metrics.

Indeed, should you strip away Pedro’s penalties in the Premier League last season, he would rank among the bottom 21% of the division’s forwards for goals scored per 90.

Oh, Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard has praised the Brighton man’s “magical” ability on the ball, but Ekitike might just be ‘Europe’s most elegant striker’, so say the Bundesliga, in any case.

But the proof is in the pudding, and Frankfurt’s number nine passes the eye test, all right. There’s a certain lightness to his dribbling, with an underlying creativity that would see him hit the ground running on English pitches, in Howe’s system.

Pedro is a talented footballer, but Ekitike is simply that bit better, and Newcastle have got to aim for the stars as they go from strength to strength.

Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike

Talent scout Jacek Kulig believes Ekitike “could reach world-class striker levels.” Pedro is a talented guy, but is the same scale of potential also applicable to him?

This is a tough case, with Frankfurt proving stubborn in their appraisal of the striker and rival interest against top-drawer outfits making PIF’s task difficult.

But just imagine if they pull it off; it would remind the footballing world that there’s a new superpower on the block.

£111m total package: Arsenal still in talks to sign their answer to Wirtz

For most of this month, it felt like Arsenal were in real danger of falling behind their rivals in the transfer market.

Fortunately, the last week or so has finally seen the club spring into life somewhat, with both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard looking set to join Martin Zubimendi ahead of next season.

However, while the club are starting to get bodies through the door, there is still a question mark over the lack of truly game-changing signings, like Liverpool’s capture of Florian Wirtz.

Yet, there might be no need for concern, as recent reports have once again linked the Gunners with an incredible attacker who could be their own version of the German international.

Arsenal target game-changing signings

While Arsenal’s focus appeared to be on useful squad players last week, the North Londoners have still been linked with a host of potentially game-changing superstars in recent weeks, such as Rodrygo and, more recently, Eberechi Eze.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former could cost up to £85, but with two Champions League titles to his name and a tally of 25 goal involvements in 53 games this season, it would be hard to deny that’s a fair valuation for the Brazilian dynamo.

Likewise, while Eze’s £68m release clause is undeniably massive, he’d be more than worth it, as, on top of helping Crystal Palace win their first major honour ever this season, he racked up a haul of 25 goal involvements in just 43 appearances.

Yet, while both players would undoubtedly have a massive impact on the Gunners, there is another star linked with the club who’d surely be even more game-changing: Viktor Gyokeres.

Yes, according to a recent report from Caught Offside, the Sporting CP star has been one of Arsenal’s top targets this summer and remains a genuine option to lead the line for next season, with it revealing that the Gunners are maintaining talks and asking to be kept up to date on the Swede’s situation.

However, what’s interesting is that the report also claims it’s now ‘only a matter of time’ before the Swedish international leaves the Portuguese champions, despite the Lisbon side holding out for more money.

Regarding the money, the story reaffirms prior reports that Sporting will not budge on their €80m valuation of the free-scoring forward, which converts to around £68m. Considering the player’s wage demands, it may be a move that ends up totalling close to £111m.

It might not be a straightforward transfer to get over the line, but Arsenal should do all they can to sign Gyokeres in the coming weeks, as he could be as consequential for them as Wirtz looks like he will be for Liverpool.

Why Gyokeres could be Arsenal's Wirtz

Now, there is already one massive difference between Wirtz and Gyokeres, which is their respective positions.

However, the fact that the former is a midfielder and the latter a striker really has no bearing on this comparison.

The basis for the Swede becoming the Gunners’ version of the German is instead solely based on how much of a game-changer he could be for them.

For example, the former Bayer Leverkusen gem was unsurprisingly brilliant this season, racking up a tally of 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances, totalling 3392 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.45 games, or every 109.41 minutes.

Unfortunately for the Gunners’ faithful, that level of output is undoubtedly going to have a massive impact on the Champions next season, but the good news is that the former Coventry City star could be just as impactful for Arteta’s side.

For example, in 52 appearances this season, totalling 4248 minutes, the Stockholm-born “monster,” as dubbed by journalist Alex Turk, scored 54 goals and provided 13 assists, which comes to a frankly absurd average of 1.28 goal involvements per game, or one every 63.40 minutes.

The 27-year-old was just as effective last season, scoring 43 goals and providing 15 assists in 50 appearances, totalling 4,169 minutes, which came out to an average of 1.16 goal involvements every game, or one every 71.87 minutes.

It is true that he’s currently playing outside of a top-five league, but if the Swedish machine can replicate even a third of his performances in North London, then his arrival could be what finally pushes Arteta’s side over the line in the Premier League or Champions League next year.

Ultimately, it’s Gyokeres’ incredible output and the fact his arrival would be such a signal of intent that means he could end up being Arsenal’s answer to Witz this summer.

Much is expected of the teenager, particularly as his older brother Jude had such a successful stint at the German giants before joining Real Madrid in 2023. The youngster may not be as good as his sibling but it is clear the fans are keen to get behind him as he prepares for life in the Bundesliga.
