Newcastle need to cut their losses on star who’s worth less than Longstaff

Newcastle United have enjoyed another successful season in front of goal, scoring 78 times in the Premier League this season, with only Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool finding the back of the net on more occasions.

Alexander Isak has been Eddie Howe's main man once again this campaign, scoring 24 times in 37 outings in all competitions – making him the Magpies' top scorer.

Anthony Gordon has enjoyed his best season in black and white, scoring 11 times over the course of the campaign, bagging himself double figures for the first time in his career.

Despite the duo's excellent goalscoring form, the Magpies have lacked goals from a third attacker, with the club potentially reaching the Champions League once more had they had a consistent talent on the right-hand side.

Harvey Barnes has recently been the player to fill the void, but his injury troubles this season have restricted his game time for Howe's side, with big expectations on his shoulders after his £38m move from Leicester City last summer.

However, one player has looked a shadow of his former self at St James' Park this season, with the club desperately needing to cut their losses during the upcoming transfer window.

Miguel Almiron's stats at Newcastle United

After his sensational goalscoring run last season, which saw the attacker score eight goals in just nine Premier League games, Miguel Almiron has failed to replicate any of his good form under Howe this campaign.

He's featured 42 times in all competitions this campaign but has produced the second-lowest tally of goal returns out of the Magpies forwards, only ahead of Barnes, who has played 22 fewer games than Almiron.

The Paraguayan suffered a knee injury in the comeback win against West Ham United, with the attacker making his return off the bench in the win over Burnley last weekend after a near two-month absence.

However, Newcastle's current chief executive Darren Eales has previously suggested that the club must sell players before making any major signings due to the constraints of FFP.

Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron.

Although the £60k-per-week winger remains contracted with the Magpies until 2026, his recent troubles with his lack of creative output and injuries prove he's no longer at the level required, with Howe needing to brutally sacrifice the winger to allow for needed investment to take the club back towards the Champions League places.

As a result of his lack of impact on the Magpies' first team, his market value has taken a hit, with the club also needing to cut their losses before it plummets any further.

Miguel Almiron's market value in 2024

Over five years on from his £20m move from Atlanta United in the MLS, Almiron has seen a steady decline in his value in recent years, with the attacker now only valued at £17.2m, as per Football Observatory.

His drop has seen homegrown talent Sean Longstaff overtake him in terms of valuation, with the 26-year-old worth £25.8m despite costing the club nothing after coming through the Magpies' youth system.

With Almiron now aged 30 and coming towards the back end of his professional career, it is pivotal that Howe and the PIF sell the attacker for as much as possible, with his price tag only going to decline in the years ahead – amid reports that he could well leave St James' Park this summer.

He's been a valuable player for the club since his big-money move, but unfortunately, the side has better alternatives in the final third, with the club needing to prevent any loss on the £20m fee by offloading him ahead of next term.

£60,000-p/w Newcastle fan favourite could now join Premier League rivals

After failing to replicate last season's incredible success of finishing inside the Premier League's top four, Newcastle United are reportedly set to be ruthless this summer by showing the door to a fan favourite.

Newcastle transfer news

It's the type of ruthlessness that PIF must show too if they want to take a permanent place in not only the Premier League's top six but the top four and Champions League. Eddie Howe's side have learned a harsh lesson in squad depth this season and player sales should go a long way in ensuring that the Magpies can splash the cash to solve that problem.

Already, those at St James' Park seem to be putting plans in place to make their squad depth problems a thing of the past, with an agreement reportedly reached to sign Lloyd Kelly. The Bournemouth defender is set to become a free agent at the end of the season upon the expiry of his current contract and will reportedly make his way to Tyneside. Able to play both left-back and centre-back, Howe will have himself an invaluable option.

AFC Bournemouth'sLloydKellylooks dejected after the match

As Kelly arrives, however, it looks as though a fan favourite will be heading in the other direction. According to Graeme Bailey and Jordan Harris of The Boot Room, Newcastle have told Miguel Almiron that he can leave the club this summer, with Saudi Arabia the most likely destination but Premier League rivals also interested.

The 30-year-old has struggled to replicate last season's form, instead producing numbers that Newcastle fans previously became accustomed to when it comes to the winger, with just five goals and three assists in all competitions. Arguably past his best, the Magpies look set to cash in and clear the winger's hefty £60k-a-week salary from their wage bill in the summer transfer window, despite the popularity his work rate has earned with those on Tyneside.

Newcastle are right to cash in on "unique" Almiron

Whilst the 2022/23 campaign sparked hope that Almiron had finally discovered his best form at Newcastle, scoring 11 goals and assisting a further four, that peak lasted just one season before the winger dropped off once more when it came to his output. Now 30 years old too, the Magpies are right to cash in and turn their attention elsewhere.

That's not to say that Howe isn't a fan, however, having praised Almiron so highly earlier this season. The Newcastle boss said via Chronicle Live: "He’s (Almiron) a unique footballer. I don’t think there’s anyone better at doing what he does – all energy, all action. I’d like to see his physical stats today because I’m sure they’d be through the roof.

"The quality he showed with his finish was very reminiscent of some of the goals he scored last year. It’s a great return to form for Miggy – he’s such an important player for us."

Nonetheless, it's time for Newcastle to move on and seek the consistency in the final third that Almiron has failed to offer on the right-hand side this season.

Salah starts in predicted Liverpool XI vs Manchester City

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with the small matter of hosting Manchester City amid a heated three-way title race.

Pep Guardiola's side have won the Premier League for three successive seasons but trail Liverpool by a point heading into the business end.

Arsenal may well finish the weekend on top should they win at home to Brentford and see Liverpool and City draw, but the Reds will remain in an excellent position as long as the Citizens fail to win at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool beat Chelsea in the 2022 Carabao Cup final.

Still, the quality is there to send City packing with their tails between their legs, especially with the buoying returns of several key stars from injury.

Liverpool still nurse a bloated injury list, but Jurgen Klopp will be confident in his side's prospects, and might make three changes after dispatching Sparta Prague 5-1 away from home on Thursday night in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie.

1

GK – Caoimhin Kelleher

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Alisson Becker has been plagued by injuries this season and he's going to miss out again against Manchester City, but Caoimhin Kelleher has been utterly brilliant in his stead.

The backup shot-stopper has played a major part in Liverpool's success this season and is more than capable for the forthcoming fixture, with his skipper, Virgil van Dijk, even marvelling at his "world-class" performances of late.

His efforts will likely leave him demanding first-team football next season and thus he might be in the final stretch of his Liverpool career, but what a journey.

2

RB – Conor Bradley

Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley.

Conor Bradley scored a rather unfortunate own goal on Thursday night but this should not detract from the 20-year-old right-back's incredible start to life as a first-team regular at Liverpool.

Trent Alexander-Arnold continues to languish in the medical room, but Bradley has proved himself a worthy asset, arguably with a more complete skill set than the influential England international anyway.

3

CB – Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate for Liverpool.

The same question is on everyone's mind: will Ibrahima Konate be fit to start against Manchester City? Let's hope. Jarell Quansah is a fine prospect, but he doesn't boast the polish nor the all-round monstrous defensive style as Konate – yet.

The France international needed to step up after Joel Matip's season was severed back in December due to an ACL injury, and alongside his imperious partner, Liverpool will have a darn good shot at stifling Haaland, Foden and co.

4

CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Van Dijk has been there, he's done that. Against Manchester City, no Reds player will be tasked with greater responsibility than he, commanding his team and organising his backline against some of the world's finest attacking outlets.

It's all been said before; everyone knows how good he is. The Netherlands international will be right at the heart of the battle, locking horns with his prolific adversaries.

5

LB – Joe Gomez

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Andy Robertson hasn't looked the same since returning from his four-month injury layoff in January, but patience must be urged here, the Scottish whiz is one of the best in the business and is bound to be back to his best soon.

However, against Phil Foden, his lack of awareness and lapses could be detrimental, and for that reason, Klopp would be wise to unleash the versatile Joe Gomez from the outset, with the defender impressive across a range of roles this season.

6

DM – Wataru Endo

Liverpool's Wataru Endo.

Liverpool lost out on Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea in August and the world laughed. Admittedly, it was funny (in a not-so-ha-ha way for the Reds), but the surprise signing of Wataru Endo for £16m to plug the gap in holding midfield has proved to be a masterful piece of business.

Industrious, intelligent and devoted to the cause, the 31-year-old will do the groundwork that allows those ahead of him to flourish and threaten Ederson's goal.

7

CM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai scored in the dying embers of Liverpool's tie in the Czech Republic on Thursday to put any hopes of a Sparta Prague comeback to bed.

The Hungarian, who has been described as an "artist" by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his invention in the Liverpool midfield, will be one to watch tomorrow.

Unleashing him from the start will mean that Harvey Elliott, praised for his "special" recent displays by journalist Bence Bocsak, has to return to the bench, but this is the right call for such a pivotal showdown.

8

CM – Alexis Mac Allister

Alexis Mac Allister for Liverpool

The unerring engine in the centre of the park for Liverpool this season, Alexis Mac Allister has been immense since completing a £35m transfer to Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, offering the full package in midfield.

As per Sofascore, the 2022 World Cup winner has scored two goals and supplied four assists from 22 Premier League matches this season, completing 88% of his passes, averaging 1.2 key passes, 2.7 tackles, 5.6 successful duels and 5.7 ball recoveries per game, also succeeding with 63% of his dribbles.

9

RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool.

He's back, and what a time to return to the starting lineup. On Thursday night, Mohamed Salah thought he'd made a goalscoring return from injury off the bench for the second time in as many months but it wasn't to be, with the Egyptian's strike against Sparta Prague chalked off for the slightest of offsides.

Across all competitions this season, Salah has posted 19 goals and 10 assists from only 23 starts, with a fine record of 17 goal contributions from 20 clashes against Manchester City, too.

10

LW – Luis Diaz

Luis Diaz for Liverpool.

Luis Diaz has been unwavering on the left flank for Liverpool across recent months, and while the Colombian's wastefulness in front of goal has posed a problem for Klopp's side, his fleet-footed skills and directness make him a valuable asset nonetheless.

Why ex-Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is yet to be appointed USMNT boss despite reported agreement with U.S. Soccer

Pochettino is yet to formally join the USMNT as their head coach despite having an agreement with the USSF

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Athletic reported last week that ex-Chelsea coach Pochettino is all set to become the new manager of the United States men's national team. Pochettino is currently without a club after he was told to exit Stamford Bridge in May this year.

  • Getty

    THE EXPLANATION

The Argentine, however, is yet to formally put pen to paper on a contract despite reaching an agreement with the United States Soccer Federation. The Athletic now reports that the reason why the manager is yet to take up the job is the terms of Chelsea's severance package to him. Per the clause, the Blues will pay Pochettino until the time he gets a new job after which the club will not owe any money to him. It is unlikely that USSF will be able to afford Pochettino's last wages as national jobs are generally lowly paid compared to what the top 6 Premier League clubs pay.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

There is more than one way to solve the existing issue. USSF could replicate Canada's stance during the signing of Jesse Marsch as three MLS teams from Canada helped the country's federation by contributing. However, it has been reported that USSF had no such chat with MLS clubs as of now. The second way will be to go the Lionel Messi way as they could collaborate with a third party who could partly sponsor the move.

    WHAT NEXT?

It remains to be seen if the Blues come forward and agree to cover half the money that was owed to the manager while USSF will pay their part. The USMNT will be next seen in September during the international break as they take on Canada and New Zealand in back-to-back friendlies.

New Zealand's Super Over heartbreaks

Over the past 12 months, they’ve had matches go into a Super Over three times and each time they’ve come up second best

Nagraj Gollapudi29-Jan-2020

Tim Southee has not had a great time in Super Overs•Getty Images

Ian Smith might as well author a book on New Zealand’s tryst with Super Overs. Kane Williamson’s men have featured in four Super Overs in the last year including the historic 2019 World Cup final. On each occasion New Zealand have lost, the last three coming in T20I series at home against England and India, including twice now in three days just this week. So imagine the state of Smith’s heart, having commentated on three of those matches, including the close finish in Hamilton on Wednesday. On Friday, Smith was happy he was not put on the commentary roster for the final segment of the fourth T20 in Wellington. Not that it had any favourable impact for New Zealand, who suffered another shocking defeat in another Super Over. For those whose nerves are too frayed to relive the finishes all over again, ESPNcricinfo has spared you the gory details and put together handy summaries instead.January 31 2020, Wellington, v IndiaHaving choked once again after entering the final over of the match in a winning position, New Zealand faced Jasprit Bumrah in the second Super Over in three days. Even before it started, New Zealand had already suffered a setback: Martin Guptill did not pad up, having erratically bumped into Scott Kuggeleijn while fielding. That meant Tom Seiffert and Colin Munro walked out to face a resurgent India.Seifert took strike. He already had irritated Bumrah after making the Indian strike bowler wait a few extra seconds during his final over in regulation time. The drama continued. Bumrah could not believe what happened next as Seifert was dropped twice in the first three balls of the Super Over, the second of which went for a four. But next delivery, Bumrah had Seifert caught at deep point.Amazingly Bumrah did not once resort to his go-to delivery – the yorker. He pitched back-of-length mostly. Possibly that was because he was wary of New Zealand lapping him in case he faltered with the yorker. Nonetheless, he finished the over strongly as Munro tried to paddle a fuller delivery, but failed.India’s target was 14. Southee had a discussion with the injured Kane Williamson and New Zealand head coach Gary Stead. All three nodded, he had to bowl again. KL Rahul shut the case in the first two deliveries, picking 10 runs. Although Rahul went for another boundary and got caught next delivery, Virat Kohli ran a calm double first and then punched his fist in jubilation with a robust four.Jimmy Neesham went moaning on Twitter. New Zealand were speechless. And, even though he was not even on commentary to call New Zealand’s downfall, Smith would have been numb in disbelief.January 29 2020, Hamilton, v IndiaTo begin with India did not even know there would be a Super Over. Defending nine off the final over in regulation time, Mohammed Shami started it watching Ross Taylor bludgeon a full toss high over midwicket for six and then finished it slinging in a pitch-perfect yorker that bowled Taylor, which meant the scores were tied. Indian captain Virat Kohli walked up to the umpires to shake hands, only to be told there would be a Super Over. Then Jasprit Bumrah, who had bowled the second-most expensive spell in his T20 career, struggled to find the precision he is known for giving away 17 runs. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, experienced hands at handling pressure situations, were at the crease. Tim Southee, New Zealand’s most experienced fast bowler was once again entrusted by Williamson to bowl it, despite his mixed history with Super Overs.New Zealand have played seven Super Overs in T20is and Southee has bowled the last five of those. But only once before today did he have to defend. It was in a group match of the 2012 World T20 in Pallekele, where New Zealand needed to defend 17 again and to do that he had to keep Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels quiet. Southee started with a no ball, Gayle crashed him for a six. He finished the over with a full toss, Samuels lobbed him high over a leaping Martin Guptill to seal the match with another six.Today, Southee started strongly, giving away only three runs off his first two balls to Rohit. But Rahul then smartly moved outside his off stump and lapped him for an easy four, putting the pressure back on Southee. Rohit returned strongly, whacking an in-the-slot ball and a length ball for consecutive sixes, leaving Southee and New Zealand shaking in disbelief. Again.November 10, 2019, Auckland, v EnglandThe Super Over was nowhere in sight when Jimmy Neesham, defending 16 runs off the final over against England, had just given three runs off his first three balls including a wicket. Then Chris Jordan walloped a six, ran a two, and lapped a four leaving Neesham smiling in disbelief.Southee failed twice in executing the yorker and both went sailing over the straight boundary as Eoin Morgan and Johnny Bairstow set a target of 18 for New Zealand, two more than the World Cup final. This time, however, New Zealand were not so far behind on boundary countback, needing just one more to level things up.Unfortunately for the hosts, Martin Guptill was tied down at the non-striker’s end as Tim Seifert attempted to negotiate the variations of Jordan. Although Seifert did get a four, off the second legitimate delivery, the next was a dot followed by his dismissal, courtesy of a brilliant lunging catch from Morgan running back at cover. Guptill could then only run a single against a perfect yorker, as Jordan wrapped up the match with another dot ball.July 14 2019, Lord’s, v EnglandYou haven’t really forgotten how this one played out have you?

Shubman Gill to replace Rohit Sharma – Sourav Ganguly

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that Shubman Gill will be replacing Rohit Sharma for the Test leg of the New Zealand tour, which will commence with the first Test in Wellington from February 21. The second Test, scheduled in Christchurch, begins on February 29.In a brief, informal chat with the media on Monday evening, outside the BCCI’s headquarters in Mumbai, Ganguly confirmed Rohit’s injury, said he had approved the Test squad, and that Gill was going to be Rohit’s replacement. Till midnight on Monday, the BCCI had not announced the Test squad. It is understood that the board was still awaiting final approvals, which might mean from BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who usually signs off on the media releases. Shah, as per PTI, was en route to New Zealand on Monday. Also it could not be ascertained what exactly Ganguly meant when he said Gill was going to be Rohit’s replacement. Did he mean Gill was now going to be part of Indian Test XI considering the Punjab batsman was part the squad in the series against Bangladesh, the last Test outing for India?Gill does have the form to increase his chances of making his Test debut. Over the weekend, he cracked a double century for India A in the first unofficial Test against New Zealand A. He was picked by the selectors in the Test squad for the first time during the home series against South Africa after KL Rahul, had fallen out of favour due to his dip in form over the last two years. The BCCI has delayed announcing the Test squad despite the selectors having discussed it at the meeting on January 12. It is understood the selectors had more or less finalised the squad but wanted to wait on the form and fitness of some of the key players. One certainty on that day who became doubtful a few days later was fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who hurt his ankle in a Ranji Trophy match while playing a home match for Delhi.Although there were strong doubts about Ishant making the New Zealand trip with six weeks rest recommended, it is believed that the fast bowler was recuperating rapidly at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. It is understood that Ishant, who is four matches short of reaching the 100-Test landmark, had started to bowl during training steadily.
