Over the past 12 months, they’ve had matches go into a Super Over three times and each time they’ve come up second best

Ian Smith might as well author a book on New Zealand’s tryst with Super Overs. Kane Williamson’s men have featured in four Super Overs in the last year including the historic 2019 World Cup final. On each occasion New Zealand have lost, the last three coming in T20I series at home against England and India, including twice now in three days just this week. So imagine the state of Smith’s heart, having commentated on three of those matches, including the close finish in Hamilton on Wednesday. On Friday, Smith was happy he was not put on the commentary roster for the final segment of the fourth T20 in Wellington. Not that it had any favourable impact for New Zealand, who suffered another shocking defeat in another Super Over. For those whose nerves are too frayed to relive the finishes all over again, ESPNcricinfo has spared you the gory details and put together handy summaries instead.January 31 2020, Wellington, v IndiaHaving choked once again after entering the final over of the match in a winning position, New Zealand faced Jasprit Bumrah in the second Super Over in three days. Even before it started, New Zealand had already suffered a setback: Martin Guptill did not pad up, having erratically bumped into Scott Kuggeleijn while fielding. That meant Tom Seiffert and Colin Munro walked out to face a resurgent India.Seifert took strike. He already had irritated Bumrah after making the Indian strike bowler wait a few extra seconds during his final over in regulation time. The drama continued. Bumrah could not believe what happened next as Seifert was dropped twice in the first three balls of the Super Over, the second of which went for a four. But next delivery, Bumrah had Seifert caught at deep point.Amazingly Bumrah did not once resort to his go-to delivery – the yorker. He pitched back-of-length mostly. Possibly that was because he was wary of New Zealand lapping him in case he faltered with the yorker. Nonetheless, he finished the over strongly as Munro tried to paddle a fuller delivery, but failed.India’s target was 14. Southee had a discussion with the injured Kane Williamson and New Zealand head coach Gary Stead. All three nodded, he had to bowl again. KL Rahul shut the case in the first two deliveries, picking 10 runs. Although Rahul went for another boundary and got caught next delivery, Virat Kohli ran a calm double first and then punched his fist in jubilation with a robust four.Jimmy Neesham went moaning on Twitter. New Zealand were speechless. And, even though he was not even on commentary to call New Zealand’s downfall, Smith would have been numb in disbelief.January 29 2020, Hamilton, v IndiaTo begin with India did not even know there would be a Super Over. Defending nine off the final over in regulation time, Mohammed Shami started it watching Ross Taylor bludgeon a full toss high over midwicket for six and then finished it slinging in a pitch-perfect yorker that bowled Taylor, which meant the scores were tied. Indian captain Virat Kohli walked up to the umpires to shake hands, only to be told there would be a Super Over. Then Jasprit Bumrah, who had bowled the second-most expensive spell in his T20 career, struggled to find the precision he is known for giving away 17 runs. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, experienced hands at handling pressure situations, were at the crease. Tim Southee, New Zealand’s most experienced fast bowler was once again entrusted by Williamson to bowl it, despite his mixed history with Super Overs.New Zealand have played seven Super Overs in T20is and Southee has bowled the last five of those. But only once before today did he have to defend. It was in a group match of the 2012 World T20 in Pallekele, where New Zealand needed to defend 17 again and to do that he had to keep Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels quiet. Southee started with a no ball, Gayle crashed him for a six. He finished the over with a full toss, Samuels lobbed him high over a leaping Martin Guptill to seal the match with another six.Today, Southee started strongly, giving away only three runs off his first two balls to Rohit. But Rahul then smartly moved outside his off stump and lapped him for an easy four, putting the pressure back on Southee. Rohit returned strongly, whacking an in-the-slot ball and a length ball for consecutive sixes, leaving Southee and New Zealand shaking in disbelief. Again.November 10, 2019, Auckland, v EnglandThe Super Over was nowhere in sight when Jimmy Neesham, defending 16 runs off the final over against England, had just given three runs off his first three balls including a wicket. Then Chris Jordan walloped a six, ran a two, and lapped a four leaving Neesham smiling in disbelief.Southee failed twice in executing the yorker and both went sailing over the straight boundary as Eoin Morgan and Johnny Bairstow set a target of 18 for New Zealand, two more than the World Cup final. This time, however, New Zealand were not so far behind on boundary countback, needing just one more to level things up.Unfortunately for the hosts, Martin Guptill was tied down at the non-striker’s end as Tim Seifert attempted to negotiate the variations of Jordan. Although Seifert did get a four, off the second legitimate delivery, the next was a dot followed by his dismissal, courtesy of a brilliant lunging catch from Morgan running back at cover. Guptill could then only run a single against a perfect yorker, as Jordan wrapped up the match with another dot ball.July 14 2019, Lord’s, v EnglandYou haven’t really forgotten how this one played out have you?

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that Shubman Gill will be replacing Rohit Sharma for the Test leg of the New Zealand tour, which will commence with the first Test in Wellington from February 21. The second Test, scheduled in Christchurch, begins on February 29.In a brief, informal chat with the media on Monday evening, outside the BCCI’s headquarters in Mumbai, Ganguly confirmed Rohit’s injury, said he had approved the Test squad, and that Gill was going to be Rohit’s replacement. Till midnight on Monday, the BCCI had not announced the Test squad. It is understood that the board was still awaiting final approvals, which might mean from BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who usually signs off on the media releases. Shah, as per PTI, was en route to New Zealand on Monday. Also it could not be ascertained what exactly Ganguly meant when he said Gill was going to be Rohit’s replacement. Did he mean Gill was now going to be part of Indian Test XI considering the Punjab batsman was part the squad in the series against Bangladesh, the last Test outing for India?Gill does have the form to increase his chances of making his Test debut. Over the weekend, he cracked a double century for India A in the first unofficial Test against New Zealand A. He was picked by the selectors in the Test squad for the first time during the home series against South Africa after KL Rahul, had fallen out of favour due to his dip in form over the last two years. The BCCI has delayed announcing the Test squad despite the selectors having discussed it at the meeting on January 12. It is understood the selectors had more or less finalised the squad but wanted to wait on the form and fitness of some of the key players. One certainty on that day who became doubtful a few days later was fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who hurt his ankle in a Ranji Trophy match while playing a home match for Delhi.Although there were strong doubts about Ishant making the New Zealand trip with six weeks rest recommended, it is believed that the fast bowler was recuperating rapidly at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. It is understood that Ishant, who is four matches short of reaching the 100-Test landmark, had started to bowl during training steadily.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Giants leapfrogged the Cape Town Blitz to the top of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) table with a successful chase of 187 under lights at St George’s Park. The Giants recovered from 4 for 2 after nine balls to win with four balls to spare in dramatic fashion. Chris Morris swung hard at a Sisanda Magala delivery to deep midwicket, where George Linde attempted a diving catch but dropped the ball onto the boundary rope to allow the Giants to complete a record chase at their home ground.Blitz quick out the blocksQuinton de Kock has made more of an impression on this tournament as a captain than a batsman so far but showed glimpses of his destructive potential at St George’s Park. De Kock had to wait 14 balls before he faced a delivery after his opening partner Janneman Malan kept strike early on and he wasted little time showing what he can do. After two balls to get his eye in, de Kock hit back-to-back sixes off the Giants’ best bowler Morris and then 18 runs off Junior Dala’s first over which included three fours and a six. De Kock’s first 31 runs came off 11 balls and he looked set for a fast 50 and more but fell for 39.Morris issues selectors a reminderThe Blitz’s top five all scored 20-plus but their middle and lower order fell away to ensure that the Giants kept them under 190. he Blitz lost 6 for 33 in the last 5.4 overs of their innings and it was Morris who put the squeeze on. His penultimate over cost only two runs and included the wicket of Liam Livingstone, caught at fine leg, and the run-out of Wahab Riaz, who tried to test the arm of Heino Kuhn, to further Morris’ claims on a place in the T20 World Cup squad.Reprieve for Jon-Jon Smuts, twiceA target of 187 needed a strong start which the Giants’ didn’t get and it was left to captain Jon-Jon Smuts to steady the ship and mount a challenge. He managed both but was almost thwarted in his efforts, twice. Smuts was on 16 when he was caught by Greg Mahlokwana at deep backward square leg off Wahab and was walking off the field when the umpires check for the no-ball revealed Wahab had overstepped. He added 15 runs to score and kept the scoring rate above eight an over when he swept Magala to Linde at short fine leg. Linde dived forward to take the catch but wasn’t sure if he had done it cleanly and neither were the umpires. Smuts survived again. His fifty came off 41 balls and he took the Giants to within 37 runs off a win.But not a third timeSmuts was on 73 when he slashed Wahab to backward point where Magala claimed a catch low down. Initially it seemed the umpires were looking at whether the catch was clean but replays focused on whether Wahab had overstepped again. His front foot appeared to be on the line and slid over milliseconds after he landed but the delivery was ruled as fair and Smuts had to go.Dale and Wahab who? Dale Steyn was brought back on mid-innings to break the 46-run fourth-wicket stand between Smuts and Kuhn and he did exactly that. Kuhn miscued a pull shot to midwicket where Asif Ali took the catch. That brought Marco Marais, from the farming town of Stutterheim, to the crease and reputations don’t seem to bother him. Marais cut Steyn behind point for four off the ball he faced and then uppercut Steyn over the third man boundary for six. Then, two balls after Smuts was dismissed, Marais outside-edged Wahab to third man for four before sending him straight down the ground for six to create another of those “remember the name,” moments.

Celtic are on the hunt for new additions and now have a good chance of being able to complete a deal for a reported target this month, according to a reliable journalist.
Celtic look for extra bodies in January…
It is well known that Brendan Rodgers is keen to ensure additional bodies arrive at Parkhead this month to help boost his side's hopes of securing a third Scottish Premiership title in quick succession.
Despite having to wait for all of 16 days, Hoops supporters finally got their first taste of action in the transfer window earlier this week as Nicolas Kuhn arrived from Rapid Vienna on a five-and-a-half-year contract and the former Germany Under-20 international will be expected to provide trickery in the wide areas.
Planning ahead for the rest of the month, the Hoops could now look to target a striker and a left-back in the closing stages of the market, alongside shifting several fringe players out of the club.
Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph delivered a brief summary of potential incomings and outgoings at Parkhead, stating on social media platform X: "Celtic are now focusing efforts to bring in a LB & ST before the end of the transfer window. Permanent deals would be preferable, but loan targets may be more achievable. GK situation is also being assessed, but more likely to be addressed in the summer."
He then added: "The Hoops are open to offers for Gustaf Lagerbielke, Alexandro Bernabei, James McCarthy & Rocco Vata. Vata is out of contract in the summer and is already in talks with Bologna & Como. Yuki Kobayashi and Marco Tilio are also likely to leave on loan this month."
Rodgers could supercharge Palma as Celtic eye swoop for £2.8k-p/w whiz

Midfield could also become an area of concern as doubt is cast over David Turnbull's future at the Scottish giants, and one media outlet now claim an arrival in the engine room could be on the cards to bolster Celtic's engine room this month.
Celtic hold Jung Ho-Yeon talks
As per reliable Daily Record reporter Scott Burns, Celtic have held talks with Gwangju FC midfielder Jung Ho-Yeon over a move to Parkhead and it is believed that there is a 'good chance' that any potential deal could move further down the line this window.

Nonetheless, it is believed that his current employers would be keen to keep him in his homeland until the summer. Scouting missions have been taking place since last year regarding the 23-year-old as Celtic look to gain a clear picture of what he could bring to the table in the middle of the park.
Labelled a "very good prospect" by Asian football expert Dario Focardi, the Mokpo-born shuttler made 34 appearances in 2023 across all competitions, registering two goals and three assists (Jung statistics – Transfermarkt).
Loanee Kwon Hyeok-kyu, winger Yang Hyun-jun and striker Oh Hyeon-gyu form a three-man Korean contingent in Glasgow and Rodgers could well be in the process of acquiring a fourth player from the nation to play a part in the second half of the season.
It’s the vicious circle that confronts young aspirants to any plum job anywhere: must have experience but can’t get it without working in the field. Now that they’ve been handed the opportunity to gain valuable experience on England’s tour of New Zealand, Eoin Morgan wants his fringe T20 World Cup hopefuls to hold up their end of the bargain and learn from it – fast.Morgan cited inexperience as a factor in England’s 14-run loss to New Zealand in their third T20I after a batting collapse which saw them lose 5 for 10 in 18 balls after they had needed 42 off 32 balls with eight wickets in hand. Also read: England throw away chase as NZ squeeze homeThe England side featured six players making their first T20 international appearances during the tour and when Morgan was out for 18 with five overs remaining, England crumbled.”It is the most inexperienced side that we will field,” Morgan said. “We can’t come out expecting to win 5-0, we do need to learn and make mistakes throughout the whole series.”An important part of learning is recognising exactly where you were and what you did wrong. You can’t be blindsided or be stubborn enough to not take in good information.”It has been a great learning day for us and hopefully the guys take in the information and learn from that, hopefully pretty quickly. They have to, and they have to play games so in situations like that you have to throw them out in the middle of it, you can’t say your senior players always have to support them and nurture them.”Sam Billings, with 24 T20I caps, was run out by Colin Munro in a moment the Black Caps hailed as a turning point and James Vince fell a short time later, having reached 49 off 39 deliveries. From there only Tom Curran reached double figures with 14 not out as the tourists managed just 166 for 7 chasing 181.”With a lot of wickets in hand you’d expect us to win,” Morgan said. “Certainly we did, we were in control pretty much up until that point. The guys that came in, we didn’t do the simple things right.”We didn’t establish a partnership, we didn’t hit with the wind, things that the Black Caps did throughout. We do have to get better and calmer in those situations and when we’re chasing.”Tom Banton – one of the six England debutants for the series alongside Matt Parkinson, Sam Curran, Saqib Mahmood, Lewis Gregory and Pat Brown – made 18 off 10 in his first international match before he was bowled trying to ramp Blair Tickner in a knock that pleased Morgan.”He’s a free-spirited guy who plays expansive cricket, and we want him to do that,” Morgan said. “He gets out playing one of his strongest shots. We’ll encourage him to keep doing that.”Banton’s fellow opener Dawid Malan was England’s top scorer for the second match running, following his 39 off 29 balls in the second match – which England also lost – with 55 off 34. Malan expressed his disappointment at not being able to build on a strong start in Wellington and Morgan thought he would feel the same after his latest innings in Nelson.”It’s extremely disappointing for him,” Morgan said. “He’s one of the only opening batters that ever talks about seeing the majority of the innings through and being there at the end. It will hurt him.”England must win the penultimate fixture in Napier on Friday to keep the five-match series alive with New Zealand leading 2-1.

Ronaldo missed several chances
Messi chants filled Slovenia end
Portugal eventually won on penalties
WHAT HAPPENED?
One Slovenia fan could be seen at Waldstadion in Frankfurt holding up an Argentina shirt bearing Messi's name and number 10. Many others were chanting for Ronaldo's great rival every time the Portuguese icon missed a chance, of which there were increasingly many, during the last 16 clash.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
At his sixth European Championship, 39-year-old Ronaldo failed to score in the group stage of a major international tournament for the first time in his career. His luck didn't seem to change as the knockouts began for Portugal either, firing shots, headers and free-kicks either wide of the target or straight at Jan Oblak. In the dying seconds of the first half of extra-time, Ronaldo lined up a penalty following a foul on Diogo Jota. He had scored his previous 13 from the spot for Portugal, but Oblak was equal to it and parried the ball onto the post, leaving Ronaldo visibly upset and in tears during the brief interval. In the end, he had the last laugh though, converting in the penalty shootout as Portugal prevailed.
DID YOU KNOW?
It's not the first time that Ronaldo has been mocked by fans chanting Messi's name. The jibes have happened for more than a decade, notably cropping up at Euro 2012, Euro 2016 and in qualifying for Euro 2020. Earlier in 2024, CR7 even wound up with a fine and suspension from football authorities in Saudi Arabia when he reacted to such chants from Al-Shabab fans while in action for Al-Nassr.
Newcastle United must act swiftly if they are to have a squad strong enough to compete in both the Premier League and Champions League next term.
So far, only Anthony Elanga has made the move to the Magpies this summer. That was an excellent piece of business, but more is required for Eddie Howe.
There has been no shortage of links, that’s for sure, but other clubs have beaten them to the punch for players such as Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitiké and Bryan Mbeumo.
Although adding another striker or two to the squad is a priority for the manager, there are other areas which could do with strengthening.
Newcastle's search for a new midfielder
The midfield area has not been earmarked for improvement, especially not compared to the attacking and defensive departments at the club.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
That’s not to say Howe won’t consider a move for someone who could offer the right qualities, however.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Newcastle are looking at the possibility of bringing Conor Gallagher back to the Premier League this summer.
That being said, the Toon face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, with Thomas Frank said to be an admirer.
The player’s agent has already started putting the feelers out to determine the midfielder’s options but he would ideally stay with Atletico Madrid if he had the choice.
Conor Gallagher in action for Atletico Madrid.
The Atleti star could be available for around £50m, which might be tempting for Howe. The manager can call on several midfield options, but adding in Gallagher could be a wise move, particularly considering the former Chelsea man offers the same sort of qualities as Bruno Guimaraes.
Why Newcastle must sign Conor Gallagher
Guimaraes is the fulcrum behind this Newcastle side that not only won the League Cup last term, but also secured a Champions League place for the second time in three seasons.
He scored five goals and grabbed eight assists throughout 2024/25, and Howe will be looking for him to continue this fine form into next season.
Gallagher may have played 50 times for Atletico, but only 27 of those came from the starting XI. He has qualities similar to Guimaraes, however, especially when comparing their stats from the 2023/24 Premier League season.
That term, Guimaraes was the most comparable player, via FBRef, to Gallagher, and they both performed well.

The pair also registered similar statistics with regard to goals and assists (12 vs 15), shots per 90 (1.38 vs 1.32), shot-creating actions per 90 (3.14 vs 3.94), tackles won (52 vs 53), successful take-on percentage (58.5% vs 54.5%) and touches in the attacking penalty area (79 vs 75) domestically that season.
On this evidence, Gallagher would be an excellent signing, offering Howe the all-round package in the middle of the park that Guimaraes also provides.
Not only can he contribute in the final third, but the Englishman is more than able to chip in defensively and help his team off the ball.
He was even hailed as a “machine” by former Chelsea teammate Moises Caicedo, signifying how important he was to their style of play.
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
Will Howe be willing to shell out £50m for a midfielder when he is in urgent need of a striker and defender this summer? Only time will tell, but Gallagher would certainly be worth the money.
