SASCOC to appoint task team to investigate CSA imminently

Will be done without input from CSA’s Members Council, after a meeting between the two did not go ahead

Firdose Moonda11-Sep-2020The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) hopes to appoint a task team to investigate Cricket South Africa’s administrative and financial affairs in the next two days but is preparing to do so without input from CSA’s Members Council. The SASCOC had hoped to meet with the Members Council – the body, comprising the 14 provincial presidents, is the highest decision-making authority in CSA – at 10am on Friday morning. But CSA’s overnight statement disagreeing with the SASCOC’s instruction for the board and the executive to step aside meant the meeting did not happen, leaving the SASCOC “very, very, disappointed” in CSA’s stance.”It is unfortunate they didn’t meet with us,” Ravi Govender, the SASCOC’s acting CEO, told ESPNcricinfo. “It was disappointing that they issued a statement without us having the opportunity to address to them. The SASCOC board takes a dim view that CSA has taken a position without engaging us.”

The SASCOC is a legislatively created umbrella body under which all South Africa’s sporting federations operate and regards its main business to be to “promote and develop high-performance sport”, as it states in its constitution. Currently, it is operating with an acting CEO and acting president as a result of delayed elections.ALSO READ: ICC likely to approach CSA for clarification on crisisThe SASCOC and CSA have had one meeting prior to the SASCOC’s letter to CSA’s Members Council last night and had a second meeting planned, which failed to take place because CSA did not make the forensic report that was used to dismiss former CEO Thabang Moroe available to the SASCOC. The report has not been made public, neither is it freely available to be seen by the Members Council, who have had to sign non-disclosure agreements to view the documents. The SASCOC has since been asked to do the same, which Govender called “ludicrous”. The SASCOC believes the nature and scope of the report mean it must be made available in order for it to fully understand the governance issues at CSA.Asked if the SASCOC was concerned that its intervention could be viewed as interference that breaches the ICC’s Code of Conduct and thereby puts CSA at risk of sanction, Govender was confident that it does not. “We have not put CSA under administration,” he said. “We are going to keep the ICC informed and we are going to share information with them. We are not calling for the suspension of CSA. We are looking into the governance issues relating to the problems.”That means as of Friday morning, CSA is continuing to run “business as usual” according to a spokesperson but that may change over the weekend. However, CSA has had the opportunity to influence who controls cricket over the course of the SASCOC inquiry but now faces the risk of being run by people outside of the game. “That is why we wrote to the Members Council – because we believed it was proper and appropriate to engage with them,” Govender said.

The Red Dragons have been able to outspend many of their opponents en route to League One. Back-to-back promotions have lifted them out of the National League and into the third tier of English football for the first time in 20 years.

The playing field is now starting to level out, as Wrexham compete with the likes of Birmingham and Huddersfield, but Hollywood co-owners are still able to make the funds available that allow certain foes to be fended off.

GettyWHAT MACANTHONY SAID

That was the case when pursuing Leicester defender Lewis Brunt – who impressed on loan at Mansfield last season – with Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony telling his podcast of how Wrexham beat him to a much sought-after defender: “The ones we were in for, we had one signed, pretty much done, and at the last minute, obviously our Welsh friends came in and swooped in and offered him, I think it was £3,000 more a week than we had already agreed with the player. By the way, fair play to them, that’s their prerogative to do that, we’ve done that over the years with other clubs. The player chose them, no problem, I’ve got no issue with that.”

Zimbabwe's three-match ODI tour to Australia postponed

The matches had been scheduled for early August but were always doubtful

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jun-2020Zimbabwe’s three-match ODI tour of Australia in early August has been postponed due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19.Although the series, which was set to be played in northern Australia, had been included in the schedule put out last month it was always unlikely it would take place.A range of issues have prevented the games from being played including the short length of the series, the significant bio-security measures that would need to be implemented prior to August, and concern for the health and safety of players, match officials, and volunteers.Speaking earlier this month Justin Langer indicated the matches were not on his radar when he spoke about getting the players ready for a potential return to action in September with the possibility of a rescheduled limited-overs tour to England. The matches were due to be played on August 9, 12, and 15 although only the third game had a venue confirmed with Townsville. It is the first full home series Australia have lost due to Covid-19 although the final two ODIs against New Zealand in March were cancelled after the opening game of the series was played behind closed doors at the SCG. Their Test tour to Bangladesh in June was also postponed.Outside of the 2015 World Cup it would have been Zimbabwe’s first visit to Australia since taking part in a tri-series in 2004 and Cricket Australia said they were committed to finding a future slot for the matches. Since Covid-19 struck, Zimbabwe have also lost series against Ireland, Afghanistan and India.”While we are disappointed to postpone the series, CA and ZC agree that in the best interest of players, match officials, volunteers as well as our fans, that this is the most practical and sensible decision,” CA’s interim chief executive Nick Hockley said. “We are committed to working with Zimbabwe Cricket on alternative dates to reschedule.”Acting Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director, Givemore Makoni, said: “We were excited about facing Australia but, given the circumstances, deferring the tour was the only option. We are, however, looking forward to the rescheduling of the series as soon as practically possible.”There are ongoing discussions between CA and the ECB about Australia travelling in September for the ODI and T20I matches that were originally scheduled for July. The next scheduled home cricket for the men’s team is two T20I series against West Indies and India in early October although they are also likely to be moved if, as expected, the T20 World Cup is postponed.

Last week it was reported that agreements had been reached for Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne to sign for Al-Ittihad, and for Ederson to join Al-Nassr. Bernardo Silva, meanwhile, is reportedly interested in joining Barcelona – and even knows what shirt number he wants. These are three important players for Pep Guardiola, but according to, City have no immediate plans to replace them.

De Bruyne and Ederson's long-term futures appear pretty tenous right now. The Belgian playmaker is out of contract at the end of the coming season and has admitted he is "open" to a Saudi move, while those close to Ederson felt he was ready to move to the Middle East towards the end of the last campaign. In a relief to City supporters, the club reportedly expect both players to remain this summer, and so the need to replace them immediately is reduced.

City have explored the goalkeeper market as they faced the possibility of both Ederson and Stefan Ortega leaving. They may not need to now, though, with Ederson's backup signing a new contract last month to remain in Manchester. He would be considered No.1 if the Brazilian did move on.

Rilee Rossouw's 43-ball century keeps Multan Sultans on top

Whatever happened at the 10-over mark in the first innings, Multan Sultans need to patent. After a sluggish start from the hosts that saw them shuffle along to 65 in 10 overs, Rilee Rossouw caught fire all of a sudden, a stunning onslaught resulting in the fastest century in PSL history and an astonishing 134 runs in the final 10 overs that set Quetta Gladiators 200 to win, a target they fell short of by 31 runs.Quetta, as you might expect, gave it as good a go as their capabilities might allow, with Shane Watson at one point looking like he might pull of a heist for his side. But Quetta’s cack-handedness with the ball and in the field left him and his team with far too much to do and much too little time. Even as the sixes flew, the asking rate continued to balloon, and once Watson was dismissed, Quetta’s fate was sealed.Rilee Rossouw celebrates his quickfire century•PCB

The mood music at the start was worlds removed from its frenetic, run-heavy conclusion. Shan Masood became the first captain to opt to bat this season, and Quetta looked like they would make him regret that decision when Zeeshan Ashraf fell early and James Vince searched unsuccessfully for the sweet timing he is so coveted for. Mohammad Nawaz stifled the batsmen at the start, while Naseem Shah begun brightly. All of that went to ruin after the halfway mark, though. The moment Rossouw biffed Anwar Ali for a six the first ball of the 11th over, Quetta lost their collective composure. You could count the number of times they hit their spots from that point onwards on one hand, and Rossouw capitalised on the chaos. Just one over between 11 and 18 went for fewer than 12 runs, and while Masood got some of his own hits in, it was all about Rossouw. He would bring up his hundred in the final over; it had taken just 43 balls, including 10 fours and half a dozen sixes.Watson tried his best to match that, and batting alongside Jason Roy, brought up the 50 partnership in the sixth over. But soon after Roy holed out to deep midwicket, it quickly became clear this would be a one-person effort. That Watson took it as far as he did was achievement enough, and it isn’t often a 41-ball 80 is on the wrong side of a PSL result. But this was clearly Rossouw’s game, and Watson was merely playing in it.The supporting actNot many will come away from the game reminiscing about Masood’s 32-ball 46, and why would they, given what else just happened in that first innings? But the value of it becomes clear when you notice it was the one thing Quetta lacked in the chase. Rossouw had, in Masood, the perfect foil on the other end, with his captain ensuring he didn’t give his wicket away or hog too much of the strike. When Masood got the strike, he got away the odd boundary and turned it over quickly to the South African, neither heaping pressure on him nor starving him of the strike. Together, they put together a partnership that totalled 139 runs in 64 balls.By contrast, Quetta managed no partnership greater than Roy and Watson’s 57 at the top, and no other Quetta batsman could even reach 15. That meant the pressure was squarely on Watson’s shoulders, further driving home the point if they were going to take it close, it was all on him. Other batsmen who had helped them win big games this season all failed, with Azam Khan falling early and Ben Cutting holing out for 12. The sort of innings Masood had played was absent from Sarfaraz Ahmed’s side, and it wasn’t a surprise to see the result pan out the way it did.Star of the dayRossouw and Watson may get the hundreds and entertain the fans most, but in a game where 200 was nearly scored and then changed, perhaps the most remarkable numbers were posted by Imran Tahir. While Watson and the rest of the Quetta top order ran riot, Tahir ensured the game wouldn’t run away from Multan. Varying his flight, pace and googly with all the experience any T20 side treasures in him, Tahir kept the Quetta batsmen guessing, and, even more importantly in such a high-scoring game, cautious. It wasn’t like he had all the luck, either. In his third over, as Watson’s charge built up a crescendo, Tahir had him into skying a drive down to long-off, where Moeen Ali stood perched for a simple catch. Moeen somehow grassed the opportunity, but undeterred, Tahir dismissed Azam Khan the next ball. He wasn’t done with Watson, either, coming back the following over and coaxing a nearly identical shot from the batsman. This time, Moeen would make no mistake. In a game where scoring ten an over was the order of the day, Tahir’s figures of 4-0-27-2 didn’t flatter him in the slightest.Multan surged at the top of the table, having swept all three games in their home city. They now have four wins in five, while Quetta sit just below them, with three wins from five matches.

Newcastle receive approach to sell another big star alongside Trippier

Newcastle United have received an approach for a "hugely important" player, with the Magpies under threat of losing both him and Kieran Trippier.

Kieran Trippier could leave Newcastle

Eddie Howe is badly in need of some positivity at the moment, but he seems to be consistently handling negative aspects of management, whether it be injuries to endless players or results in the Premier League not improving.

Now, the Newcastle boss has been rocked by the news that Trippier could potentially leave the club during the January transfer window, with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich expressing a strong interest in signing him. The 33-year-old is believed to be keen on the move, according to some reports, but the Magpies are digging their heels in, not wanting to sell one of their most important players by turning down an initial bid.

It looks as though financial reasons could be behind the possible decision to have to eventually sell the Englishman, ensuring that the club adheres to Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. Either way, it is a transfer situation that has come from nowhere, and while Trippier's form recently has been a long way from its best, few supporters, if any, would be happy to see him depart any time soon.

The right-back may not be the only key figure under threat of bringing an end to his time at St James' Park this month, however, with another worrying update now emerging regarding another popular hero.

Newcastle could also sell Callum Wilson

Approach to reliable journalist Craig Hope on X, Newcastle have rejected an approach for Callum Wilson from Atletico Madrid, but a sale is far from ruled out.

Callum Wilson.

"Newcastle REJECT loan offer for Callum Wilson from Atletico Madrid. But striker could be sold if Spanish club (or another) return with permanent offer. Wilson likely to be open to talks if deal accepted."

The report itself in The Daily Mail goes on to state that "in a move similar to Bayern Munich’s approach for Kieran Trippier, European clubs are seeking to take advantage of Newcastle’s financial fair play predicament."

This is a concerning period for Newcastle, whose season has already been a disappointment, but is now threatening to turn into disarray with the potential loss of numerous individuals who have played a massive role in the club getting to where they are currently.

At 31, Wilson admittedly doesn't represent the long-term future for the Magpies – his injury-prone nature is frustrating, too – but Howe values him greatly as a player, once saying:

"He’s a hugely important part of our team, a focal point. We rely not just on his goals but his movement, his work rate. His appearance in the team gave us confidence."

Reliable reporter says Newcastle are eyeing "outstanding" player

Talks have been held over a move to St James’ Park.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 20, 2024

Hopefully, Newcastle hold firm and Wilson decides that staying put is the best option for him, but given Newcastle's financial situation, it may end up being a piece of business that begrudgingly gets over the line.

Elder statesman Kieron Pollard wants to create nurturing environment for West Indies' young talents

Hyderabad. It’s where the Kieron Pollard story burst to life a decade ago, when he smashed an unbeaten 18-ball 54 for Trinidad & Tobago against New South Wales in the Champions League. That innings changed his life, and it changed T20 too, setting him on a trailblazing path towards becoming the format’s first globetrotting freelancer.Hyderabad was also the scene, more recently, of Pollard’s fourth IPL title win with Mumbai Indians, in May earlier this year.ALSO READ – The Cricket Monthly: Pollard, a mercenary and legendPollard is back at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium now, as the captain of a West Indies team that is preparing to defend its T20 World Cup title next year. He has fond memories of the ground, and hopes his vast experience of playing in India will benefit a revamped West Indies team that includes some new faces as well as old ones like Lendl Simmons.”It is common knowledge. We have played a lot of cricket around the world, we play a lot of cricket here in India,” Pollard said on the eve of the T20I series opener against India. “Fond memories of this ground, going all the way back to 2009, with Trinidad & Tobago. So, it’s just a matter of trying to use that experience and enlightening our group. Hopefully, that experience can hold us in good stead. We are here to play some good cricket and we are prepared well. Hopefully, come tomorrow, we will hit the ground running.”Getty Images

Opening batsman Brandon King and legspinner Hayden Walsh are among the new faces in the T20I and ODI sides. King torched the CPL with his blistering strokeplay, but his form cooled off against Afghanistan in Lucknow, where he managed a mere 17 runs in three T20I innings at an average of 5.66 and strike rate of 73.91.Walsh, who was the leading wicket-taker in the CPL despite playing only nine games for the champion team Barbados Tridents, hasn’t yet posed the same kind of threat in international cricket. Pollard has backed the newbies, urging the public to not be too critical of them after just one or two international series.”We’re excited to be here [in India] and represent the West Indies and yes, again, scores and wickets haven’t shown their ability yet,” Pollard said. “But, you can’t judge people on a couple of games and I think that’s the problem we have as individuals. We try to judge people too quickly. We need to give people time in everything we do.”In order for guys to invest in what they do, they need experience and we as the management team want to back these guys and see how far we can go because we have seen their talent and attitude and that’s some of the things we look at.”ALSO READ: Who will fill the Russell-sized hole for West Indies?Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran have been around the set-up a little longer than King and Walsh, but though they were both part of West Indies’ 50-overs World Cup side, they’re still easing their way into international cricket. Pollard said the team management is focused on protecting West Indies’ bright, young talents from “vultures”.”There are a lot of young talents coming through,” he said. It’s just a matter of trying to reach them and ease them into the world of international cricket, which we know is a very, very tough place. Again, the most important thing for the management is to have patience and yes at the end of the day you want to have results but sometimes you need to be honest with yourself.”And that’s something we’re trying to do in every aspect of our game as well – just try to be honest, assess and improve. So, look forward to these talents to show the world what they can do. Sometimes, you need to have that umbrella over them and try and protect them from the vultures that are out to take down their careers pretty quickly.”Nicholas Pooran congratulates Kieron Pollard for his half-century•Associated Press

Pollard was also pleased with West Indies’ preparation in the lead-up to the limited-overs series against India. Pollard led West Indies to their first ODI series victory in five years, against Afghanistan, and although they lost the subsequent T20I series 2-1, they got a feel of Indian conditions. The likes of Pollard and Pooran – who is not available for the series opener against India because of his ball-tampering ban – then jetted to the UAE for the T10 league. In addition to these stints, some of West Indies’ players were part of a camp in Mumbai before heading to Hyderabad.”Couple of the guys had a couple of days off, couple of the guys went to T10, couple of the guys played in the Test matches against Afghanistan,” Pollard said. “We didn’t leave from this part of the world. Eleven of us were there in Mumbai for five-six days. We had good practice. Then we came here on the second [of December] and had three full days of good practice. So, for us it’s just a matter of getting acclimatised [to the conditions].”We’ve been here for a while now, since November. It’s about putting the pieces of the puzzle together. There are instances where we know we faltered, in that last series. We’ve spoken about it and hopefully come this series, we can put these things right.”Pollard’s aggression and in-your-face captaincy style has worked for him in the CPL, where he nearly carried Trinbago Knight Riders to the final in October. He hopes to lead by example for West Indies too, and set up victories for them. During the T10 league as well, Pollard had spoken of how his “will to win” drives his career.”Things have been going pretty decently for me and I just want to continue doing that, continue scoring runs for the team, and hopefully my contribution to the team is going to hold it in good stead and put us in a winning position.”
