Cook in command of England's new beginnings

Victory in South Africa has added another mighty notch to Alastair Cook’s burgeoning captaincy CV, but his team are still at the beginning of their journey

George Dobell in Johannesburg16-Jan-2016Alastair Cook isn’t really the type to flash a ‘Talk nah, KP’ note in the moment of triumph, but he probably could have been forgiven had he done so in Johannesburg.Victory here means Cook is the only man in history to lead his side to Test series victories in India and South Africa. When you add in a couple of Ashes wins, you have what has become – despite all the criticism – a deeply impressive track record. History may reflect on Cook, as a batsman and a leader, and wonder what all the fuss was about. He has experienced a modest series with the bat. In correcting his weakness outside off stump, he may have created another one off his hip. But we have experienced blips in Cook’s form before and know enough to suggest patience will be rewarded. Besides, it is not as if England have a surplus of opening batsmen demanding selection. But Cook did enjoy a couple of fine moments as leader on the final day here. The first was the decision to persist with Stuart Broad after three wicketless overs at the start of the innings – in the first innings he replaced him with Steven Finn after a similarly unpromising start. The second was the placement of James Taylor at an unusually deep short-leg position. As he claimed two inspired catches – chances that he would have had no chance of holding had he been in the conventional short-leg position – Cook could feel quietly satisfied with himself. So could Broad. After a disappointing first innings – he admitted he bowled too short and confirmed rumours that he had been struggling with a stomach ailment – he harnessed helpful conditions perfectly in the second innings. His spell of five wickets for one run – and that run was from a dropped catch – included two of the best batsmen in the world. These spells are occurring too frequently to be dismissed as fortunate. The truth is, in conditions offering some assistance, he really is a terrific bowler.

Clever Trevor applies the coup de arse

Alastair Cook admitted a “kick up the arse” from the England coach, Trevor Bayliss, inspired England to a match-defining afternoon session in Johannesburg.

Bayliss, who has gained a reputation as a quietly spoken man during his few months with England, surprised the team in the lunch interval by making it very clear that they were facing a perfect opportunity to clinch the series in the next couple of hours and that, if they looked back at the end of the day having failed to take the chance, he would be mightily unimpressed.

England subsequently claimed all ten South Africa second-innings wickets for 60 runs after lunch, with Stuart Broad producing a spell of five wickets for one run.

“Trev gave us a kick up the arse at lunch,” Cook said “He said, ‘if you want to win the series this is the time to grab the opportunity. There is a chance out there if someone is willing to step up and you don’t want to be sat at the end of the day wishing you’d given a bit more.’

“The chat was from a guy that doesn’t say too much. Rather than sulking about it, the lads looked at themselves. There was a real intensity in the field for that two-hour session. It really helped.

“Stuart Broad steamed in after Trev had a few harsh words for us. It is a privilege to captain him and when he gets on a roll like that you just let him go.

“It seemed to work, so well done Trevor.”

Some will point to the absence of Dale Steyn and suggest England’s victory is a little hollow. It is true that Steyn, and Vernon Philander, would have strengthened this South Africa side. But it hasn’t been their bowling that has let them down, it has been their batting. And, odd though it sounds, they lost this Test as much in the first innings, when their soft dismissals failed to punish an under-par bowling display from England, as in the second, when they were undone by fine bowling and outstanding fielding on a very tricky surface. But the most impressive aspect of this victory – a three-day victory over the No. 1-ranked Test side – from an England perspective was that it felt like the beginning. That is probably just the way it should be. This is, in truth, a South Africa side in decline – especially without Steyn – and hugely impressive though England have been, they are going to face tougher challenges in the next couple of years. Already the five-match series in India (later this year) and Australia (late in 2017) look mouth-watering.Besides, if England require any sobering-up on Sunday morning – Cook said at the presentation that Andrew Strauss, England’s director of cricket, had personally sanctioned a very late night – they will receive it with a reminder of where they stand in the grand scheme of things. Win, lose or draw in Centurion, England will be no higher than No. 5 when the ICC Test rankings are published at the end of the series. If that seems low – and it does seem incongruous that the new No. 1 side, India, have lost nine of their last 13 Tests against England – it is worth remembering the defeat in Barbados, the defeats in Leeds (against Sri Lanka and New Zealand), the defeats in the UAE and, most of all, the defeat against Australia at Lord’s. They remain a work in progress.”They are much better than that ranking,” AB de Villiers said afterwards. “They are a good, well-balanced team. Hopefully we won’t let them get to No. 1 in the rankings, but they have a bright future.”It is, in an odd way, encouraging that Jimmy Anderson has played a relatively minor role in this victory. There was a time – most memorably at Trent Bridge in 2013, but also in India in 2012 – when the England seam attack was too heavily reliant upon him. While it is too early to predict his demise – if anyone has earned a modest game, it is Anderson – it does bode well that Ben Stokes and Finn are developing into potent figures in their own right. Finn may well miss the final Test with a side strain, but he has cemented his position as a first-choice selection now. There were many architects of this victory. There was Jonny Bairstow, who again contributed valuable runs – no England wicketkeeper has scored as many runs in a Test series since 2007 – and claimed nine catches and run-out. There was Joe Root, who confirmed his position alongside Steven Smith, Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson as one of the best young batsmen in the world with an innings that dwarfed all other batting performances in the match. There was Stokes, who batted and bowled with a class that is becoming familiar. And there was Broad. The Wanderers scoreboard tells the story•Getty ImagesThere have been a couple of key differences between the sides in this series. The first, and most obvious, is the depth of the England side in batting and bowling. Whereas England have nearly always (Cape Town pushed this theory to its limits) had a fresh bowler to turn to, South Africa have rotated four decent bowlers to the point of exhaustion. The rise of Ben Stokes and the departure of Jacques Kallis has changed the dynamic between these teams drastically since 2012.The other key difference is harder to quantify. But while much of the talk around the South Africa camp in recent weeks has been about potential retirements and T20 commitments, the talk in the England camp has been about winning this Test series. The fact is, England’s players can afford to focus entirely on Test cricket. That’s why, when the BCCI announce the list of players involved in the IPL auction, there will be no Alex Hales, no Moeen Ali (the first Andrew Strauss knew of his intention to enter into the auction was when he read it on ESPNcricinfo), no David Willey and no Adil Rashid. In a perfect world, all of them would love to go. But they value a Test place above all and the benefit of the ECB’s relative financial strength is they need not prioritise T20 for their long-term financial future. Right or wrong, money talks in international cricket these days. There have been many parallels in this series to the last encounter between these sides in 2012. At that time, England were the No. 1 side, on the wane and beset by internal troubles, and South Africa the hungry challengers, pushing for the crown and on the brink of a few years of Test domination. This time the roles are reversed. It is too early to say whether England will go on to enjoy a similar period at the top of the rankings, but they are heading in the right direction.

'Come and feel the heart beat' – Arshdeep Singh revels in death-overs masterclass

Kings captain Sam Curran found their batting depth as an important reason behind their victory

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Apr-20231:15

Moody: Arshdeep a threat in the powerplay and at the death

Arshdeep Singh is among the death bowling elite in short-form cricket. Since 2022, only four men have delivered at least 60 overs in the last four of a T20 game and taken a minimum of 30 wickets. He’s one of them and he has the best average and the best economy rate of the lot. But some of that good work was spoiled by his tendency to overstep. He’s bowled 18 front-foot no-balls in this time.On Saturday, Mumbai needed 34 to win from 17 balls, with Suryakumar Yadav at his destructive best, and Tim David having just swung a six. The next five balls saw Arshdeep bowl a yorker and three low full tosses, thus executing with perfection what he was tasked to do. That included dismissing Suryakumar for 57 off 25 balls. So how does he do it?”The rhythm felt good before the IPL,” Arshdeep told the broadcasters after Punjab Kings beat Mumbai in a tight win, and he finished with 4 for 29. “I changed my run-up a bit, and it helped with my no-ball problem,”And what of the pressure, asked Danny Morrison. “I guess Danny you should come next to me and feel the heart beat; it’s not even 120.”Arshdeep’s captain Sam Curran, also chosen as the Player of the Match for a match-turning 55 off 29 balls, credited his bowlers – including Nathan Ellis, who came back well after being hit for a six in the 19th over – for defending a total of 214 in what was a very tight finish.”I don’t think personally I should be getting the Man of the Match [award], [after] the way the boys closed out the game,” Curran said. “Arshdeep and Nathan were incredible. The spinners bowled really well.”Curran said that despite the absence of regular captain Shikhar Dhawan, the depth that Kings have in their line-up – with Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan slotted at Nos. 7 and 8 respectively against Mumbai – allowed him to bat freely and help his side recover from being 83 for 4 in the tenth over. Curran and Harpreet Bhatia added 92 in eight overs, after which Jitesh cracked 25 from only seven balls – including four sixes.”The time when I went in to bat, I knew I had to give myself a bit of a chance,” Curran said. “Maybe [in] the previous games I have batted, I looked to go [big] a little earlier [than required]. I kind of reflected on that. We’ve got a really long batting line-up. Jitesh just came and went bang, bang, bang! We know we’ve got that in the sheds. Also without having Shikhar… we just have to take that responsibility.”Curran’s counterpart Rohit Sharma was disappointed at how his bowlers let slip the situation, but wasn’t looking too far ahead yet. He said the fact that they still had eight games to go provided them with enough time to bounce back.”We’ve played six games now; we’ve won three and lost three. So even stevens at the moment,” he said. “[There is] still a lot of time left in the tournament; we cannot really look down and start worrying too much about things. It’s about staying in the game and the competition, and keep doing the right things.”Got to give credit to Arshdeep, how he bowled in the last couple of overs. It was not really our day, but we gave it a good fight.”

Aston Villa may join Premier League race to sign "excellent" £40m attacker

Perhaps looking to add crucial squad depth in an attempt to balance both domestic and European action, Aston Villa could now reportedly join a six-team Premier League race to sign a £40m midfielder.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have almost been the victims of their own success at times in the current campaign, with any inconsistencies occurring in the face of a packed fixture schedule thanks to Champions League commitments. Those inconsistencies couldn’t have been summed up better last week either when Unai Emery’s side defeated RB Leipzig before suffering a late defeat against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

In usual circumstances, the visit of Manchester City up next would signal further concern, but this isn’t the Manchester City of the last four seasons. This is a wounded champion – champions who have picked up just one win in 11 games. In fact, rather than suffering the feeling of growing concern, Villa should see this weekend’s clash as the perfect chance to get back to winning ways in the Premier League.

Aston Villa interested in signing £30m player with same agent as Barkley

ByBrett Worthington Dec 19, 2024

It’s not just on the pitch that those in the Midlands could defeat England’s top sides either. According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa could now join a six-team Premier League race to sign Charles De Ketelaere in 2025.

The attacking midfielder – worth a reported £40m – has also attracted the interest of Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Manchester City, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur in what hands Atalanta quite the decision to make.

Having struggled to make an impact at AC Milan, De Ketelaere has since redeemed himself at Atalanta to get back on track towards his highly-rated potential. Whether that results in a second chance on the big stage – and this time in the Premier League – remains to be seen.

"Excellent" De Ketelaere is on the rise again

De Ketelaere deserves great credit for how he’s responded to a difficult AC Milan spell, as do Atalanta for how they’ve transformed the young attacking midfielder once more. Now, however, it could be time for the 23-year-old to earn redemption under the spotlight.

Emery’s Aston Villa side represent a safe option to continue his Atalanta form onto the bigger stage too. It’s seen the likes of Morgan Rodgers swap the Championship for the Premier League and thrive, as well as helping Emiliano Martinez on his way to becoming one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Now, for just £40m, the Midlands club could have a similar impact on De Ketelaere.

De Ketelaere midfielder has found himself at the centre of praise in the current campaign, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig dubbing the Belgian “an excellent signing” for Atalanta.

In a move that would beat a number of Premier League sides, Aston Villa could make yet another statement of intent on the transfer front in 2025.

De Bruyne's future has been thrown into doubt following his dismal performance in Sunday's defeat at home to Liverpool although there has been a suggestion that the mercurial Belgian, who is into the last year of his contract with City, could stay for at least another year at the Etihad Stadium and accept playing a peripheral role in the squad.

"He's an exceptional player. He was and is and hopefully he will be," Guardiola told a press conference. "Whatever happens will belong to him and the club."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Haaland missed the Liverpool game and the Champions League knockout play-off second leg at Real Madrid with a knee injury although the coach is optimistic that his striker could be back to face Tottenham. Guardiola said: "[He] feels better, the last two games didn't feel okay, we'll see tomorrow."

City lost their first five matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but turned the tie by winning in the FA Cup fourth-round tie last season and grabbing a crucial win in the penultimate game of the Premier League season which put them on the path to winning a fourth consecutive league title. However, City's record against Spurs has haunted them again this campaign as they were beaten 2-1 in the Carabao Cup and were then thrashed 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium in November.

Latest Tottenham transfer news

Tottenham are on the lookout for new additions to their squad this January, with it recently emerging they have touched base with the agents of Manchester City’s Jack Grealish, who retains a good relationship with sporting director Johan Lange.

Grealish is not the only attacking option in Ange Postecoglou’s sights this winter, with the Lilywhites being named as potential suitors for Real Madrid’s Arda Guler, while FC Midtjylland’s Dario Osorio is also on the radar.

As ever, Spurs are also likely to receive interest in some of their star players this winter, with The Boot Room recently revealing that Son Heung-min is emerging as a player of interest in the Saudi Pro League, given that he is not in line for a new contract in north London.

Considering the impact Son has made at N17 over the years, his potential departure may be a worry for the Tottenham faithful. However, one player they may be less concerned about is Sergio Reguilon.

It was recently reported that Reguilon could completely terminate his contract this January in order to force a move, as he is not deemed to be a part of Postecoglou’s plans going forward.

According to the latest update from CaughtOffside, the 27-year-old wants to leave Tottenham this winter, and the club, and by extension chairman Daniel Levy, are all too happy to grant his wish, given that Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies are now ahead of him in the pecking order at left-back.

The Spaniard could be set for a return to his home country, with Sevilla and Getafe keen to take him to La Liga, and both clubs are now ready to start negotiations with Spurs and his representatives.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon.

Reguilon set to leave Spurs

News of the left-back’s departure is unlikely to be a concern to a great number of Spurs fans, given that he is yet to make an appearance for the club in any competition this season.

The former Sevilla man has also spent time on loan at Manchester United and Brentford over the past two seasons, having fallen out of favour at N17, in light of Udogie’s emergence as a first-team regular under Postecoglou.

During his time at Brentford, the £53k per-week defender was lauded as “superb” by journalist Sam Tabuteau, indicating that he could still make an impact for a club lower down the Premier League table, but it is clear he is surplus to requirements in north London.

With any luck, Postecoglou will be able to get Reguilon off the books in the upcoming transfer window, freeing up vital funds which can be used to reinforce other areas of the squad.
