Bat, analyse, brainstorm, repeat: Gill preps hard for left-arm pace exam

The India opener took part in every training session leading up to the Super Four game against Pakistan, and batted long hours

Gill on the challenge of facing Pakistan’s bowlers

It is like the process you followed for your math exam. Prepare hard, solve a few problems – the more complex the better – to ready yourself for the toughest questions. In Colombo, Shubman Gill has been that guy. India had two optional nets and one full session under lights in the days leading up to their Asia Cup Super Four game against Pakistan. Gill took part in every one of them – even the optional training on Thursday and Saturday – and batted long hours. After all, he will be keen to perform better than the last time he faced Pakistan, which was in the group stage where he made 10 off 32 balls.Face left-arm throwdowns, work consciously on the forward stride, look at footage, chat with the batting coach, and repeat. Gill had his nets routine pretty much set on each of the first two days. Last week was the first time he had played against Pakistan in senior men’s cricket. Given India could play them at least three times – if both teams make the Asia Cup final – in the next couple of months, he left no stone unturned to be ready.Related

So much has Gill faced Nuwan Seneviratne, India’s left-arm throwdown specialist, throughout the tournament that it wouldn’t be a surprise if he had the Sri Lankan on speed dial. The indoor nets on Thursday was all about getting his footwork right against left-arm over-the-wicket angle and, importantly, not falling over while playing deliveries straightening into him.”[Seneviratne] has been with us for the past seven-eight years,” Gill said before training. “We have two right-arm throwdown side-arm specialists, and as a variation, we also have a left-arm side-arm specialist. It helps in various conditions.”On Saturday, it was a tad different. His training on the eve of the India-Pakistan match was about the hard lengths. It was perhaps the shortest batting stint he had had in the nets all Asia Cup.Shubman Gill made 10 off 32 in the opening match of the Asia Cup•Getty ImagesHaving survived probing spells from Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, Gill fell to first-change Haris Rauf in the last meeting against Pakistan. It was an in-between length that he inside-edged onto his stumps. He worked on picking lengths early and putting them away. He received a good mix of full and hard-length deliveries, and a few bumpers along the way. It was not the prettiest Gill net to watch: he was beaten on both edges, edged a few balls, and lost his off stump once. He had a short chat with batting coach Vikram Rathour and continued for about 15 minutes more.”Shaheen swings the ball more. Naseem relies more on pace,” Gill said. “If he gets help from the surface, he hits good areas. Both are different bowlers and pose different challenges.”Before getting to [international] level, every batter would have faced left-arm bowling at some stage. Whenever you play a new bowler it makes a difference, [more so] because we don’t play Pakistan as often as we do some other teams. Coming up against a quality bowling attack like Pakistan’s, [not having played them that often before] makes a difference.”Sometimes there’s no technical flaw as such. Bowlers are also there to bowl, and you might get some good deliveries. You might get some unfortunate dismissals. When you are playing well there might be a few things going your way. You have to trust your game, back yourself and get those quick runs.”The prep’s done, and Gill will hope it translates into runs as he faces Sunday’s big test.

Leeds eyeing "unbelievable" midfielder whose teammates compare him to Maradona

Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a move for an “unbelievable” Premier League player in the January transfer window, as he looks to boost his World Cup chances.

Aaronson hails impressive "mentality" at Leeds

The Whites continue to battle well in the Premier League this season, with last Friday’s 2-1 win at home to West Ham leaving them 15th in the table at the end of the weekend.

One player who is enjoying his football at Leeds is Brenden Aaronson, with the American hailing the mentality on show under Daniel Farke after scoring against the Hammers, and lauding the competition for places.

“It was huge for us today to keep the mentality. I think that was the message all week. Late minutes in the game, stay on top of it and get the result which we needed today to hold the 2-1 win. Defensively, we were good today. We handed a lot of crossing situations from them. West Ham is a team that has a ton of quality so it was definitely a difficult game. I am just proud of the group.

“I think we have this next-man-up mentality where I think everybody is ready to play and everybody is winning their chance. I think the biggest thing for me is getting in the box and the ball bounces your way but that is all about positioning and reacting. I am really happy with the goal and I am happy with the group and the atmosphere.”

But Leeds will know that there is still a huge amount of work to do this season, in terms of avoiding relegation back to the Championship, and new signings in January wouldn’t go amiss.

Leeds eye January move for "unbelievable" Barkley

According to The Leeds Press, Leeds and Farke are keen on signing Aston Villa midfielder Ross Barkley on loan in the January window.

The 31-year-old is seen as “an option amongst several other players” midway through the season, with Farke “keen to add a creative midfielder to his squad in January”. The player himself is “keen for more game time”, with a move to Elland Road giving him an “outside chance of a place in the England World Cup squad” next summer.

Barkley could be a shrewd creative loan option for Leeds in attacking midfield, scoring 37 Premier League goals in his career and being lauded by former Luton Town teammate Andros Townsend, who even once compared him to the legendary Diego Maradona.

Barkley has a point to prove and a big World Cup aim with England, which would only be a good thing for Leeds, and if the loan move didn’t work out, he would simply return to Villa at the end of the season.

Future on Alyssa Healy's mind after Rachael Haynes' call

“I still really love the game and love being involved at the moment”

AAP04-Oct-2022Alyssa Healy has revealed Meg Lanning’s personal break and Rachael Haynes’ retirement made her start considering her own cricketing future.Australia’s all-conquering women’s team face something of a changing of the guard this summer, with Shelley Nitschke the new coach and a new captain also likely.Healy is among the favourites to take on the leadership if Lanning does not return in time for the T20 tour of India in December, with the wicketkeeper-batter confident she is ready if called upon. But it comes as the 32-year-old said she had recently been jolted into thinking about her own plans.”Meg taking a break and Rach retiring, it hit me like a tonne of bricks,” Healy told AAP at the Men’s T20 World Cup trophy event in Sydney. “It made me sit back and think about what I’ve been doing and what it looks like for me.Related

Nitschke's inbox: Haynes' replacement, new leaders and sustaining success

Healy, Gardner, McGrath: who could be Australia's next captain?

“The beauty is I still really love the game and love being involved at the moment. I’m just going to just keep plugging along and doing what I’m doing and continue to enjoy it.”One factor keeping Healy going is what remains on the horizon. After reclaiming the 50-over World Cup and winning Commonwealth Games gold this year were originally seen as the final frontiers, Australia now have their first Test in India in 39 years scheduled next December.”Mitch jokes all the time at home that I’ve changed my mind about three or four times on continuing playing,” Healy said. “But it’s simply because of the fact that there continues to be new opportunities that pop up that I want to be a part of.”I’ve got mad FOMO when I’m just watching cricket. We haven’t really toured India that much over the little period of time. So the fact that we’re going there twice in the space of 12 months is exciting.”Meanwhile, Healy could serve as the answer to Australia’s captaincy question, following vice-captain Haynes’ retirement and with Lanning’s future still in doubt after opting out of the WBBL.Healy has stated publicly there could be better candidates, with Beth Mooney, Jess Jonassen and Tahlia McGrath the other likely options. But her history as one of Australia’s most experienced players, along with her time captaining NSW, would make her an obvious choice.”I’ve taken a lot out of captaining NSW,” Healy said. “The beauty of our [NSW] squad over the last few years is leading a really young, inexperienced team. That’s been a really enjoyable job for me: Being able to talk cricket with young players.”So I guess in a sense, it correlates across to the Aussie team. We’re in a similar sort of boat at the moment. I’ll take a lot of confidence and some experience out of that if it comes my way.”

New Zealand look to stay in semi-final hunt against winless Pakistan

There’s rain forecast throughout the day but if we get a game, expect conditions to suit spin as the game goes on

Preview: Pakistan search for their first win

Big picture – Pakistan’s battle to stay alive

It’s that time of the tournament where the calculators come out as qualification permutations start being meted out in earnest. Heading into this game, of the two sides New Zealand are the ones with qualification for the semi-finals still in their hands; wins in their next three and they’ll be on an unassailable nine points – easier said than done, though, as India and England await after their bout with Pakistan. For Pakistan, things are a little trickier. Not only are they firmly bottom of the table with a solitary point, they also have the worst net run rate. All that said they’re still not mathematically eliminated, though with South Africa and Sri Lanka to follow after New Zealand, three wins in three would be a monumental feat. And even that would not guarantee qualification, with other results needing to go their way.But for the time being all these sides can do is focus their attention onto matters on the field. Pakistan will know that they haven’t been as bad as results suggest. Yes, their three defeats have been pretty comprehensive, but two were to pre-tournament favourites India and Australia. And against England, it was only rain that halted their push towards a first win.Related

  • Fatima Sana – a captain burdened, a fast bowler unrestrained

Fatima Sana has led from the front, picking up nine wickets across the tournament, and in her, Pakistan possess a potent weapon against most top orders – amplified by the fact that batting in Colombo has been at its most perilous in the first half of the innings. And in Sadia Iqbal and Nashra Sandhu they boast a pair of spinners that would challenge any batting line-up.Their batting, however, has let them down at this World Cup, and it’s here that New Zealand will seek to gain an advantage. New Zealand have shown glimpses of their prowess with both bat and ball across this tournament, but are yet to string it all together. They bundled out Bangladesh cheaply, but failed to consistently challenge batters in their matches against Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka. On the batting front too, there have been good performances – especially from Sophie Devine – but none that have managed to blow the opposition away. These will be areas they will be desperate to improve on, and a down-on-their-luck Pakistan might be just the opposition they would be eyeing to sharpen their blades.

In the spotlight – Baig and Tahuhu

Fatima Sana has been doing the business with the new ball, but her new ball partner Diana Baig has struggled to hold down the fort at the other end. Baig, to be fair, has had a fairly prolific 2025, picking up 17 wickets so far in 12 WODIs. It is, in fact, the most successful calendar year of her career, but her economy rate has been on the high side – in a series against South Africa last month she conceded 8.83 an over, and even in a dominant performance against England she went at 8.33. With their batting misfiring, Pakistan will know they can ill-afford to leak runs.Lea Tahuhu took seven wickets across New Zealand’s opening three matches at this World Cup – her only three matches in 2025, in fact – but found herself on the bench against Sri Lanka. That decision was based on Chamari Athapaththu being perceived to have a poor match-up against left-arm seamers like Bree Illing. Pakistan are one of Tahuhu’s favoured opponents, with her economy rate across 11 WODIs against them just 3.70, so expect her to be back in the XI and with a point to prove.2:14

Sawyer: ‘We’ve got to be really wary of the Pakistan attack’

Team news

Tahuhu is likely to be back in the XI, having sat out the washed-out match against Sri Lanka on tactical grounds.New Zealand XI (probable): 1 Suzie Bates, 2 Georgia Plimmer, 3 Amelia Kerr, 4 Sophie Devine (capt), 5 Brooke Halliday, 6 Maddy Green, 7 Isabella Gaze, 8 Jess Kerr, 9 Rosemary Mair, 10 Eden Carson, 11 Lea Tahuhu.Pakistan haven’t been shy about changing up their XI, particularly their batting order. But considering the washout against England, they might stick to an unchanged side.Pakistan XI (probable): 1 Omaima Sohail, 2 Muneeba Ali, 3 Sidra Amin, 4 Aliya Riaz 5 Natalia Pervaiz, 6 Sidra Nawaz (wk), 7 Fatima Sana (capt), 8 Rameen Shamim, 9 Diana Baig, 10 Nashra Sandhu, 10 Sadia Iqbal

Pitch and conditions

More of the same from Colombo as far as the weather is concerned, with rain forecast throughout the day. If we do get a game, expect the pitch to suit spin as the game goes on.

Stats and trivia

  • Suzie Bates is 75 runs away from 6000 in ODIs. She is also 68 runs away from surpassing Charlotte Edwards to become the second-highest run-scorer in WODIs.
  • Bates has scored 874 runs at an average of 72.83 against Pakistan, only bettered by Stafanie Taylor’s 1287.
  • New Zealand hold a 15-1 win-loss record over Pakistan in WODIs, with their last defeat coming in 2017.

Quotes

“They’ve [Pakistan have] put some teams in some real tough spots, I think they had Australia 6 for 60. And then obviously the other night England was 7 for 70. So, their bowling attack is one that we’ve got to be really wary of. They’ve really challenged a couple of weeks or two of the top nations. So, yeah, been impressed in particular with their bowling.”
“We have a chance to go in[to the] semis if we win the next three matches. So maybe the scenario is open, so maybe we will win the three matches.”

Swann's worst fears confirmed

The failure of their seamers to provide any control, and the lack of a second spinner, saw England leaning heavily on their premier slow bowler on day one

George Dobell in Ahmedabad15-Nov-2012In the run up to the Test series in India, Graeme Swann gave an interview in which he said England would be “screwed” if they had to rely on just him and Monty Panesar. But a day into the series, Swann’s worst fears have been realised. Perhaps something beyond his worst fears: not only did England lean on him like a pensioner on a Zimmer frame, but he did not even have the support of Panesar’s spin.Swann claimed 4 for 85 on the first day in Ahmedabad. It was not just the fact that he took all four wickets that underlined England reliance upon him, but the fact that he was the only frontline bowler to offer his captain sustained control. Swann delivered 32 overs – more than a third of the overs bowled – and was the only one of the specialist bowlers to concede under three-an-over. Indeed, Stuart Broad and Tim Bresnan both went for more than four-an-over.While England’s seamers were never likely to coax much out of a low, slow wicket that offered them little, Swann accepted they had conceded too many runs in the first session and India had earned themselves a strong position in the game. He took some consolation in the thought that England had clawed their way back into things a little as the day wore on. From 120 without loss at lunch and then 225 for 1 not long before tea, England fought back to claim 3 for 59 in 27 overs.”From the first few overs we realised we were in for the long haul over here,” Swann said afterwards. “We realised the ball was not going to swing much but we didn’t expect the pitch to be that low and slow. At lunch we sat down and came up with a new game plan. I don’t think we bowled straight enough in the first session. On a pitch that is low and slow you have to attack the stumps a bit more. I think we did that as the game went on and that’s why we got a couple of wickets and pulled the run-rate back.”The first session they undoubtedly won. Arguably the other two were even. Having lost the toss and bowled first on that pitch we would have liked five or six wickets but we’ll take four. If we had five or six it would have been an exceptional day for us and would have knocked 60 runs off the total.”India have some very destructive players and the way Viru [Virender Sehwag] batted really took the game away from us in the first couple of hours. I’ve been reading in the paper that he hasn’t got a century for a couple of years and he’s been questioned by the local press. Good on him for banishing those doubters.”

“Bowled through the gate is always my favourite way to get a batsman out, especially a player as good as Kohli.”Graeme Swann on his final wicket of the day

The wicket of Sehwag, who was bowled as he attempted to sweep, made Swann the highest wicket-taker of any offspinner to play for England, surpassing Jim Laker’s record of 193. He laughed off the suggestion that he was on course to emulate – or even beat – Laker’s record of 19 wickets in a Test in 1956 and instead chose to focus on two of the more pleasing wickets: Sachin Tendulkar, beaten in the flight and caught at deep mid-wicket, and Virat Kohli, beaten through the gate by an offbreak, certainly delighted him.”I always say I’m not a stats man but when people told me I was near Jim Laker I was genuinely excited,” Swann said. When you’re growing up these are the famous names of the game, you don’t even dream of emulating them, let alone going past them.”I was fortunate with Kohli’s wicket that the ball was changed after the quarter seam exploded on the soft ball. The replacement was a touch harder. No ball spun for three or four overs and then one just hit a pebble and turned square. It’s always my favourite way to get a batsman out, bowled through the gate. Especially when it is a player as good as Kohli.”The noise that erupted in the ground when Sachin walked out to bat… before he even comes out to the middle you know who it is. It’s always nice to get him out, and get him out early. Let’s face it, he’s the greatest player still playing the game.”But Swann knew his success might be something of a mixed blessing. Bearing in mind that India have two frontline spinners in their side and they will after last use of a pitch that seems certain to turn more as the match progresses, then Swann’s early success suggests England’s batsmen could face a tough struggle.”The Indian spinners were probably watching with eagle eyes and looking forward to bowling on that pitch,” Swann said. “It’s still a very good pitch for batting on. It’s only the odd ball that turned. That can pose problems sometimes. I think our batsmen will look at the footage and realise that it’s still a good pitch.”

Bumrah-powered MI take on PBKS for spot in the final

Are MI favourites for Qualifier 2?

Big picture: A mouth-watering knockoutAfter 72 matches and two gruelling months of play-travel-play, with a break in between, only three teams are left standing in IPL 2025: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI). While RCB have already qualified for the final, MI will meet PBKS in another crunch game on Sunday to identify the other finalists.Five-time champions vs a team that is in quest for its first title. The two teams have had contrasting paths to Qualifier 2. Around mid-April, MI were second from bottom, with just a solitary win in five games. But they went on to do MI things to storm into the playoffs and knock out Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday. As for PBKS, they were the form team in the league phase, topping the points table before they suffered a rude jolt in Qualifier 1 against RCB.The reward for finishing in the top two is another crack at the final. PBKS had earned that reward after beating MI in Jaipur earlier this week. Another win against MI on Sunday will guarantee a first-time IPL champion. It’s quite unusual for an IPL team to have four uncapped Indian batters in their top seven, but Ricky Ponting and Iyer have unlocked their potential, transforming PBKS into an explosive batting line-up that has posted 200 in seven of their 15 innings. While their style of play fell flat on a New Chandigarh surface that offered substantial seam movement and variable bounce, it could work on the truer pitches in Ahmedabad. In contrast, MI’s batting revolves around battle-hardened internationals, with just one uncapped player in their top seven. After Ryan Rickelton’s departure, Jonny Bairstow seamlessly slotted into the opening slot on his franchise debut, his salvo setting the base for a 200-plus total on Friday. Suryakumar and Hardik have been reeling off the big hits in the middle order, but it is Bumrah who continues to be their potent point of difference, turning 20-over innings into 16.In the Eliminator, MI were without Deepak Chahar (hamstring niggle) and were even hindered by dew, but nothing could stop Bumrah from yorking Washington Sundar with perhaps the ball of the tournament. Can PBKS find a way to stop him on Sunday?8:30

A potentially flatter pitch in Ahmedabad could suit his – and PBKS’ – attacking approach. Iyer has hit 31 sixes in 302 balls this season. Only Suryakumar (35), Mitchell Marsh (37) and Nicholas Pooran (40) have struck more. When he was captaining GT, Hardik Pandya was more of an anchor than a hitter, but this season as MI’s captain, he has been less of an anchor and more of a hitter, giving their innings the finishing kick. Between overs 17 and 20, he has clattered 109 off 53 balls at a strike rate of 205.66, the second highest among 16 batters who have faced at least 50 balls in this phase. 'It's a ritual of mine!' – Lionesses star Lauren Hemp reveals hilarious pre-match routine but admits to only doing 'half' a job

Lauren Hemp has spoken about a surprising and amusing routine she does before games, fake tanning in the buildup to be freshly bronzed out on the pitch. Speaking to ex-England internationals Karen Carney and Jill Scott, the Lionesses winger joked that she can't always be bothered do it properly and the Manchester City star laughed it off as 'a ritual of mine'.

  • Hemp's surprising pre-match tanning routine

During a lighthearted appearance on the podcast, Hemp shared her quirky tanning habit before matches. She explained that she often only tans her quads, leaving her calves – usually covered by socks – untouched, which has led to some amusing looks in the past. Both Carney and Scott teased her, but Hemp stood by the routine as something she always does.

Explaining her approach, Hemp revealed: "Oh, I can't be bothered to do, like, my whole body. I just do, like, half and half. If I forgot, then I'll just do quads. I fake tan before every game? I just think, 'I'll do the bit people can see,' and then I leave the rest."

She went on to add with a smile: "That [tanning] is a ritual of mine. I can't really think of many other things I have. It's funny really, because you'd expect me to be talking about football preparation, but this is actually one of my matchday habits."

Dyche must ditch Everton’s 4/10 dud from the first-team in 24/25

Sean Dyche’s Everton side fell to a first Premier League defeat in six matches, losing 2-1 to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at the Emirates on the final day of the campaign.

After securing safety multiple weeks ago, the game was a free hit for the Toffees as they aimed to derail the Gunners’ outside chances of winning a first league title in 20 years.

Idrissa Gueye’s deflected effort in the first half handed Everton a surprise lead before Takehiro Tomiyasu drew the Gunners level just before the end of the first 45.

Kai Havertz’s controversial goal late on secured the win for the hosts, in a game where the Toffees frustrated Arteta’s side for large spells.

Many players provided excellent performances in the final outing of the 2023/24 season, however, one player, in particular, looked off the pace, with the Toffees player needing to be axed from the first team next season.

Ashley Young’s stats against Arsenal

Following his contract extension just a couple of days ago, Ashley Young was rewarded with a start in North London, featuring in a natural left-back role.

However, he produced a performance to forget during the defeat, with Liverpool Echo journalist Chris Beesley subsequently handing him a 4/10 rating for his dismal showing.

Young, who will be 39 in a couple of weeks, featured for the entirety of the contest, but looked sluggish throughout, with his age certainly catching up with him in recent outings.

He made the error which led to the Gunners’ winner, with Young finishing the contest with just 18 passes completed at a completion rate of a measly 55%.

The full-back also gifted possession away 21 times within his 56 touches on the pitch, giving the ball to the opposition nearly every three times he touched the ball.

He was just as poor out of possession, winning just five duels out of the eight he entered, whilst also being dribbled past once and failing to make any interceptions.

Despite his recent extension, Dyche must think twice about including him in the team next season, with the defender proving to be a liability in recent matches.

Why Young shouldn’t be in the first-team during 2024/25

Whilst he’s undoubtedly been a player to provide experience to the Toffees squad this season, his display at the Emirates is evidence he’s unable to compete at the top level anymore.

The defender is coming to the end of his professional career and the club simply can’t be relying on a near 39-year-old if they are to build on this season’s 15th-placed finish.
